Chapter 5
Unveiling the Mystery
Detectives Sam Clayton and Hannah Cruz left the Harper mansion with a renewed sense of purpose. Margaret's revelation about seeing Richard in Highgate Park the night Evelyn disappeared was a significant breakthrough. They needed to find out who Richard was meeting and what their argument was about.
Back at the station, Sam and Hannah reviewed their notes and decided to dig deeper into Richard's personal life. They focused on identifying the woman he was seen with in the park. They started by interviewing his colleagues and friends, hoping to uncover any relationships or connections that might lead them to this mysterious woman.
Their first stop was Richard's office, where they spoke with his secretary, Linda. She was a meticulous woman in her fifties, known for her discretion and loyalty to Richard.
"Linda, we need to ask you about Richard's recent activities," Sam said. "Did you notice anything unusual in the days leading up to Evelyn's disappearance?"
Linda hesitated, then nodded. "Mr. Donovan seemed more stressed than usual. He had several meetings outside the office, but he didn't tell me who they were with."
"Did you notice any women visiting him here or him mentioning any female clients or acquaintances?" Hannah asked.
"There was one woman who came by a few times," Linda admitted. "Her name is Claudia Bennett. She's a lawyer working on a case with Mr. Donovan. They seemed to have a close working relationship."
"Can you give us her contact information?" Sam asked, jotting down the name.
Linda provided Claudia's details, and the detectives thanked her before heading to Claudia's office. Claudia Bennett was a sharp, attractive woman in her late thirties, with a reputation for being a tough litigator. She greeted them with a mixture of curiosity and wariness.
"Detectives, what can I do for you?" Claudia asked, her tone professional.
"We need to ask you about Richard Donovan," Sam said. "We understand you've been working closely with him."
Claudia's expression remained neutral. "Yes, we've been collaborating on a merger deal. Is there a problem?"
"Were you in Highgate Park the night Evelyn Harper disappeared?" Hannah asked directly.
Claudia's eyes widened slightly. "No, I wasn't. I was at home, working on some documents. You can check my phone records and emails if you need to."
"Can you think of any reason why Richard would be in the park that night?" Sam asked.
Claudia shook her head. "I can't. But if you're implying that Richard had something to do with Evelyn's disappearance, I find that hard to believe."
"Thank you for your time, Ms. Bennett," Sam said. "We'll be in touch if we need any further information."
As they left Claudia's office, Hannah frowned. "She seemed genuine, but we need to verify her alibi."
Back at the station, they checked Claudia's phone records and emails for the night in question. Her activity was consistent with her statement; she had been at home, working late into the night.
"Claudia's alibi checks out," Sam said. "But that doesn't rule out Richard meeting someone else in the park. We need to keep digging."
They decided to revisit Evelyn's workplace, hoping to find more clues among her colleagues. One of her close friends at the law firm, Jessica, was particularly insightful.
"Evelyn was a private person, but she did mention feeling uneasy about Richard's business dealings," Jessica said. "She thought he was hiding something."
"Did she ever mention anyone else she was worried about?" Hannah asked.
Jessica hesitated, then nodded. "There was a woman named Veronica Green. She and Richard had a history. Evelyn felt threatened by her."
"Do you know where we can find Veronica?" Sam asked.
"I don't know her address, but I know she works at a marketing firm downtown," Jessica replied.
With this new lead, Sam and Hannah headed to the marketing firm where Veronica worked. Veronica Green was a striking woman in her early thirties with a confident demeanor. She seemed surprised to see the detectives.
"Detectives, what brings you here?" Veronica asked, her tone cool and guarded.
"We need to ask you about your relationship with Richard Donovan," Sam said. "Were you in Highgate Park the night Evelyn Harper disappeared?"
Veronica's eyes narrowed. "I haven't seen Richard in months. We ended things a long time ago. I was at a charity event that night. You can check with the organizers."
"Why did you and Richard break up?" Hannah asked.
Veronica sighed. "Richard was always focused on his business. He never made time for our relationship. It just wasn't working."
As they left Veronica's office, Sam and Hannah felt a growing sense of frustration. They were hitting dead ends, but they couldn't give up. Back at the station, they reviewed all the information they had gathered so far.
"There's something we're missing," Sam said, pacing the room. "We need to re-examine the evidence from the park. There has to be a clue we overlooked."
They spread out the items from the park on the table: the torn fabric, the shoe, the hairpin, and a small, ornate bracelet. As Hannah examined the bracelet more closely, she noticed something.
"Sam, look at this," Hannah said, holding the bracelet under the light. "There's an inscription on the inside. It says 'To M, with love.'"
"M could stand for Margaret," Sam said, his mind racing. "But it could also stand for someone else. We need to check if Richard ever bought this bracelet for anyone."
They traced the bracelet back to a high-end jewelry store in the city. The store owner, Mr. Thompson, remembered the piece well.
"Yes, I sold this bracelet a few months ago," Mr. Thompson said. "It was a custom order. The buyer was a man named Richard Donovan."
"Do you remember who he bought it for?" Sam asked.
Mr. Thompson checked his records. "He said it was for a woman named Melissa."
"Melissa?" Hannah repeated. "We haven't come across that name before."
They decided to look into Richard's past relationships and discovered Melissa, an old flame from his college days. Melissa was now living in a small town nearby. They made the trip to see her, hoping she could shed light on the mystery.
Melissa was a kind, soft-spoken woman in her early forties. She seemed surprised but not alarmed by their visit.
"Detectives, I haven't seen Richard in years," Melissa said. "We went our separate ways after college."
"Did Richard ever send you a bracelet?" Sam asked, showing her a photo of the item.
Melissa's eyes widened. "Yes, he did. It was a surprise gift, but I never saw him in person. He sent it with a note saying he was sorry for everything that happened between us."
"Did you respond to him?" Hannah asked.
"No, I didn't," Melissa replied. "I didn't want to reopen old wounds."
As they left Melissa's house, Sam felt a growing sense of urgency. Richard was more involved in Evelyn's disappearance than they had initially thought. They needed to confront him with this new information.
Back at the Harper mansion, they found Richard in his study, looking tense. Sam and Hannah laid out the evidence they had gathered, including the bracelet and Margaret's testimony.
"Mr. Donovan, we have reason to believe you were meeting someone in Highgate Park the night Evelyn disappeared," Sam said. "We need to know who that person was and what you were arguing about."
Richard's face paled, and he sank into his chair. "I was meeting an old friend, not Melissa, but someone else. Her name is Helena. We were discussing a business matter that had gone wrong."
"Helena who?" Hannah asked.
"Helena Carlisle," Richard replied. "She was my business partner in a failed venture. She was threatening to expose some financial misconduct if I didn't pay her off."
"Why didn't you tell us this earlier?" Sam asked, frustration evident in his voice.
"I didn't want to drag Helena into this," Richard said. "She's already been through enough because of our failed business."
"We need to speak with Helena," Hannah said. "Where can we find her?"
Richard provided Helena's address, and the detectives left the mansion with a renewed sense of purpose. They were getting closer to the truth, and the deception was finally starting to unravel.
