Chapter 3
Uncovering Secrets
Detective Sam Clayton and his partner, Detective Hannah Cruz, sat in the cluttered office they shared at the police station. The small space was filled with stacks of case files, whiteboards covered in notes, and the hum of fluorescent lights overhead. The discovery of Evelyn's torn dress was a significant lead, but they knew they had a long road ahead.
"Let's start by looking into Evelyn's social circle," Sam said, pinning a photograph of Evelyn to the whiteboard. "We need to understand who she interacted with and if anyone had a reason to harm her."
Hannah nodded, adding names and photos of potential suspects and witnesses around Evelyn's picture. They compiled a list of people to interview: friends, colleagues, and acquaintances who might provide insights into Evelyn's life.
Their first stop was the upscale boutique where Evelyn frequently shopped. The owner, Isabella, was a stylish woman in her early forties with an eye for detail. She greeted them with a warm smile but quickly became somber when they mentioned Evelyn's disappearance.
"Evelyn is one of my best customers," Isabella said, her voice tinged with worry. "She was here just last week, buying a dress for an event. I can't believe she's missing."
"Did she mention anything unusual or seem distressed during her visit?" Hannah asked.
Isabella thought for a moment. "She seemed distracted, like she had something on her mind. She mentioned an upcoming trip, but she didn't say where. She also talked about her fiancé, Richard. She seemed unsure about the wedding."
"Did she mention anyone else?" Sam asked.
"She talked about her cousin, Margaret," Isabella said. "She said Margaret had been acting strange lately, more secretive than usual."
Sam made a note of this. "Thank you, Isabella. If you remember anything else, please contact us."
As they left the boutique, Sam turned to Hannah. "We need to dig deeper into Margaret's behavior. There might be more to her story."
Their next stop was Evelyn's favorite café, a quaint little place called The Velvet Bean. The barista, a young man named Max, recognized Evelyn's photo immediately.
"Evelyn's a regular here," Max said, his brow furrowing. "She usually comes in for a latte and a chat. The last time she was here, she seemed really upset."
"Did she say why?" Sam asked.
"She mentioned having a fight with her fiancé," Max replied. "She was also worried about her cousin. She said something about Margaret keeping secrets."
"Did she mention what kind of secrets?" Hannah asked.
"No, she didn't," Max said. "But she seemed really troubled by it."
As they left the café, Sam felt a growing sense of unease. Evelyn's relationships with Richard and Margaret were clearly strained, but there was still no concrete evidence pointing to either of them.
Back at the station, they reviewed their notes and the timeline of Evelyn's last known activities. The torn fabric found in the park was the only physical clue they had, and they needed more information to narrow down their suspects.
"Let's visit Evelyn's workplace," Sam suggested. "Her colleagues might know something useful."
Evelyn worked at a high-profile law firm in the city. Her colleagues described her as dedicated and driven, but they also mentioned she had been under a lot of stress recently. Her boss, Mr. Whitman, was particularly concerned.
"Evelyn is one of our top attorneys," Mr. Whitman said, pacing his office. "She had been working on a big case, and the pressure was getting to her. But I never imagined she would disappear like this."
"Was she having any conflicts at work?" Hannah asked.
"Not that I know of," Mr. Whitman replied. "But she did have a few run-ins with a client named Henry Barnes. He was very demanding and often crossed the line."
"Do you have his contact information?" Sam asked.
Mr. Whitman handed them a business card. "Here. I hope it helps."
Henry Barnes was a wealthy businessman with a reputation for being difficult. When they reached his office, he greeted them with a cold stare, clearly irritated by their visit.
"I've already told the police everything I know," Barnes snapped. "I had no reason to harm Evelyn Harper."
"We need to hear it from you directly," Sam said, unfazed. "Did you have any recent interactions with her?"
Barnes sighed, leaning back in his chair. "Yes, I met with her a week ago to discuss my case. She was distracted and didn't seem to be paying attention. I was frustrated, but I didn't threaten her."
"Did she mention any personal issues?" Hannah asked.
"No," Barnes said, his irritation growing. "Look, I didn't have anything to do with her disappearance. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have work to do."
As they left Barnes' office, Sam couldn't shake the feeling that he was hiding something. They decided to follow up on Barnes' alibi and background, hoping to find any inconsistencies.
Back at the station, they received a call from the lab. The analysis of the fabric revealed traces of a rare plant that only grew in a specific area of Highgate Park. It was a small lead, but it gave them a location to focus their search.
"We need to search that area thoroughly," Sam said. "There might be more evidence there."
The next morning, they returned to Highgate Park with a team of officers and search dogs. They combed through the area around the pond, where the rare plant was found, hoping to uncover more clues.
After several hours of searching, one of the officers called out. "Detectives, over here!"
Sam and Hannah rushed over to find a small, hidden alcove covered in dense foliage. Inside, they found a few more pieces of torn fabric and a discarded shoe that matched the description of Evelyn's footwear.
"This is definitely a promising lead," Hannah said, carefully bagging the evidence.
"We're getting closer," Sam agreed. "But we need to keep pressing our suspects. Someone knows more than they're letting on."
With renewed determination, they headed back to the mansion to confront Richard and Margaret once more. The shadows of Highgate were slowly beginning to lift, but there were still many secrets left to uncover.
