Chapter 22: The Phantom Lieutenant Moves
The sun hung high over the Soul Society, its rays beating down on the Gotei 13 barracks. Shin lay sprawled atop the roof, arms tucked behind his head, staring blankly at the sky. He exhaled a long, lazy sigh.
"Ten days," he muttered to himself. "It's been ten long, boring days. If my timing's right, today's the day those Ryoka show up. Ichigo, Yoruichi... finally, some entertainment."
As if on cue, a voice called up to him. "Lieutenant Shin!"
He tilted his head slightly, spotting Nanao Ise standing below with her usual stern expression. "Morning, Nanao," he greeted, yawning. "What brings you here?"
"There are Ryoka at the Seireimon," she said briskly.
A grin crept across Shin's face. "About time. I was starting to think they got lost." He stood and stretched, cracking his neck. "Well, I guess I'll—"
"You're not going anywhere," Nanao interrupted, stepping into his path. "Captain-Commander Yamamoto has summoned all captains for a meeting. He's also requested your presence."
Shin raised an eyebrow. "A captain's meeting? What does that have to do with me? I'm just a lieutenant."
"Trust me, I'd rather not be here delivering this," Nanao replied, adjusting her glasses. "But Yamamoto's orders are absolute."
He groaned dramatically, running a hand through his hair. "Fine, fine. Let's see what the old man wants."
The meeting hall was already buzzing with tension when Shin arrived. The captains of the Gotei 13 stood in their designated positions, their combined spiritual pressures creating a suffocating atmosphere. Shin strolled in nonchalantly, ignoring the weight in the air.
"Ah, Shin," Gin Ichimaru greeted with his signature fox-like grin. "Fashionably late, as always."
Shin smirked back. "Figured you'd miss me otherwise."
Before Gin could respond, Yamamoto's booming voice silenced the room. "We begin."
The Commander's fiery gaze swept over the gathered captains. "The Ryoka have breached the Seireimon. Captain Ichimaru, explain why you failed to apprehend them when you encountered them."
Gin's grin didn't falter. "Ah, well, I thought they were dead. Must be slippin' in my old age."
"Tch," Mayuri Kurotsuchi sneered. "Spare us the act. A captain-level Soul Reaper doesn't 'mistake' whether an opponent is alive or dead."
The argument escalated quickly, voices rising as accusations and retorts flew. Shin leaned against a nearby pillar, yawning loudly.
All eyes turned to him.
"What?" he asked, feigning innocence. "This is a waste of time. Mistakes happen. Perfection doesn't exist, no matter how much you lot pretend it does. Aren't there Ryoka we should be dealing with?"
Yamamoto's voice cut through the tension. "Enough. All squads are to mobilize immediately. The Ryoka are now in the Seireitei. Dismissed!"
Shin straightened, stretching as he turned to leave. "Well, that was fun. Time to find my entertainment."
Leaping from rooftop to rooftop, Shin surveyed the Seireitei. "If everything's going as I remember, Ichigo should've already had his rematch with Renji."
A scream pierced the air, drawing his attention. He landed in a courtyard where a crowd of Soul Reapers stared up in shock. Following their gaze, Shin's eyes landed on the scene above—a gruesome sight. Captain Aizen's body hung in the sky, impaled on his own Zanpakutō, blood dripping onto the ground below.
"So, the show's begun," Shin muttered, a dark chuckle escaping his lips. "The first time I saw this, even I was fooled. Gotta hand it to Aizen—he's a master of theatrics."
He stayed just long enough to commit the scene to memory before moving on. "If this is happening, then Ichigo's beaten Renji. Time to find him."
It didn't take long for Shin to find his target. Ichigo was running alongside Ganju and Hanataro, their expressions a mix of determination and fear. Shin landed smoothly in their path, his spiritual pressure flooding the area like a tidal wave.
"Good God, I've been looking all over for you," Shin said, his voice carrying an edge of amusement.
The weight of his Reiatsu brought Ganju and Hanataro to their knees, gasping for breath. Ichigo gritted his teeth, stepping forward to shield them. "Who are you?"
Shin's grin widened. "Tatsumi Shin. Most know me as the 'Phantom Lieutenant.'"
Ichigo's grip tightened on Zangetsu's hilt. "Ganju, take Hanataro and run. I'll handle this."
"But—" Ganju began, only to be silenced by Ichigo's glare. With a reluctant nod, he hauled Hanataro to his feet and retreated.
Shin tilted his head, his gaze never leaving Ichigo. "Brave, aren't you? But bravery alone won't save you."
Ichigo drew his sword, pointing it at Shin. "I don't care who you are. I'm not letting you stop me."
Shin yawned, vanishing in a blur. He reappeared behind Ichigo, leaning casually against the boy's back. "You're out of your depth, kid."
Ichigo spun, slashing wildly, but Shin was already gone, perched atop Zangetsu's extended blade. "Sloppy," Shin remarked. "You'll never hit me like that."
With a single punch, Shin sent Ichigo flying, his body crashing into a nearby wall. "This might've been fun if you were at my level, but let's end this."
He used two fingers to slash across Ichigo's chest, leaving him gasping on the ground. As Shin turned to leave, a surge of spiritual pressure stopped him in his tracks.
"Ah, right," Shin muttered. "The Zangetsu power boost."
Ichigo rose, his body glowing with raw energy. "I'm not done yet!"
Shin sighed, drawing his Zanpakutō. "Look, kid, I don't care how many power-ups you get. You're not beating me."
Their blades clashed, sparks flying as the sheer force of their attacks shook the air around them. Ichigo's determination was unyielding, but Shin's experience and skill proved insurmountable.
As the dust settled, Shin stood victorious, his blade sheathed. Ichigo lay unconscious, a deep slash across his chest.
"That won't kill him," Shin said, walking away.
