Chapter 22: The Star-Nosed Mole
The Wind Lynx had originally been resting quietly in the tree, but when it saw so many people, it immediately became alert.
Its fur bristled.
Its body arched, pupils narrowed sharply, and its large mouth opened wide, revealing four sharp, long fangs.
A fearsome roar burst from its massive, savage maw.
The headmaster signaled for the teachers to stay alert and then activated his martial soul.
His ears transformed into cat ears, a tail emerged behind him, and his claws grew sharp.
His fur turned yellow and was covered in black ring-shaped patterns resembling round or oval plum blossoms.
It was a mid-to-high level beast-type martial soul, the Golden Leopard.
As an agility-type beast martial soul, it was especially known for its incredible speed and attack power.
The moment the headmaster activated his martial soul, he lunged forward.
Yellow, yellow, purple, and purple, four dazzling soul rings circled around him, representing the ideal soul ring combination.
The Wind Lynx tried to flee but couldn't escape at all.
A normal Wind Lynx couldn't even outrun a leopard, let alone a powerful Battle Soul Sect master like the headmaster.
He didn't even use a soul skill, he simply reached out and grabbed the Wind Lynx by the neck with precision, then gave a light jolt with his hand.
The Wind Lynx's body convulsed violently and instantly stopped struggling.
Its spine had been precisely snapped, and its brain could no longer control its body.
Its head was still biting at the air, but its body went limp.
Its limbs drooped along with its body.
It looked like an octopus with a lynx's head, suddenly becoming soft and boneless.
Only its mouth was still stiff.
The headmaster broke its jaw to prevent any further harm, then jumped down from the tree.
He approached the excited Mole Soul Master, placed the Wind Lynx on the ground, and handed over a dagger. "Come on, quickly kill it."
"Yes!" the Mole Soul Master replied respectfully and immediately took the dagger.
His hands were trembling slightly, unable to contain his excitement.
Under the encouraging and envious gazes of those around him, he took a deep breath to calm his nerves.
Then, with a hardened expression and wide, determined eyes, he thrust the dagger into the Wind Lynx's eye.
As the Wind Lynx died, a faint white glow began to rise from its body.
The light shimmered faintly in the air, looking as though it might dissipate at any moment.
Then it formed a hazy ring of light that floated above the Wind Lynx's corpse.
"Your Mole martial soul is roughly an agility type, and agility relies on swiftness. The Wind Lynx is a good fit," the headmaster offered some guidance.
Seeing that the Mole Soul Master looked a bit lost, he added softly, "Sit cross-legged, use your soul power to draw it in, then start meditating and absorb it. Stay conscious during the absorption process."
They had learned how to absorb soul rings in class.
But most soul masters didn't like to study, so repeating it once more didn't hurt.
"If the soul ring isn't absorbed within two hours, it will vanish. Don't forget that."
While the Mole Soul Master was absorbing the soul ring, Fang Ling watched with a trace of envy in his eyes. A soul ring!
Unfortunately, it was only a ten-year soul ring, a bit weak.
However, for most of the students present, who lacked talent, the difference between a ten-year and a hundred-year soul ring wasn't huge.
How could he tell they lacked talent?
Simple.
They only just reached level 10 by sixth grade, just meeting the requirement to obtain a soul ring. That speaks for itself.
Ten-year soul rings didn't take long to absorb, and soon the Mole Soul Master was done.
He leapt up from the ground and opened his eyes, his demeanor already changed.
He seemed more fierce.
Having seen blood and committed intentional killing, he was no longer just a student.
He activated his Mole martial soul, a white soul ring slowly rotated around him.
He looked incredibly excited and was about to speak when the headmaster stopped him.
"Soul skills are personal secrets. We're just passersby. No need to tell us."
"Remember this, don't share unless it's someone you can truly trust!"
"Yes!" everyone responded in unison.
The headmaster smiled slightly. "Good, that went smoothly. Next!"
Everyone felt encouraged, and the atmosphere grew more enthusiastic.
A 60-year Torch Deadleaf Butterfly, a 90-year Devil Vine, a 50-year Black Gold Tiger…
The process of acquiring soul rings went smoothly. Nothing unusual happened.
After a peaceful night's rest, the next morning came.
The group set off once again.
After watching for so long, it was finally Fang Ling's turn!
Because of the lineup, he was the last one.
Everyone stopped at a specific location.
Now, those who had already gotten their soul rings stood guard on the outside.
Three Soul Master-level teachers positioned themselves on the outermost perimeter.
The headmaster, holding the shovel Fang Ling had brought, began helping dig.
Using the underground tunnels as a reference and drawing on his experience, he helped determine the location of the Star-Nosed Mole's nest.
Soon, a large, adult cat-sized mole was dug up.
Its small claws flailed wildly, struggling desperately, but it couldn't escape the headmaster's grip.
The pink tentacles on its nose, resembling stars in the sky, did indeed look a bit like celestial bodies.
"One, two… twenty-two."
The headmaster narrowed his eyes, quickly counted, and nodded.
"Twenty-two, that means it's 110 years old. Just right for you."
It had been caught easily by the headmaster, with no resistance at all, no different from a ten-year soul beast. Truly living up to its weak reputation.
It was practically a disgrace to century-old soul beasts.
Just like before, the headmaster snapped its spine and placed the fat mole on the ground.
"Come, kill it and begin the absorption. Your body may have its flaws, but this should be no problem. Since your martial soul is a scythe, I won't give you a dagger."
Before each soul ring absorption, he gave guidance.
Now, he also advised Fang Ling:
"Learn to make use of your own martial soul. A scythe isn't like a sword or blade that simply slashes, its usage is different."
"I'm not good with weapons myself, so that's all I can tell you. The rest, you must think through on your own."
"Thank you for your guidance, Headmaster!" Fang Ling nodded gently.
Then, he decisively swung his weapon, and the sharp scythe blade sliced through the Star-Nosed Mole's neck.
A soft yellow light began to condense above the creature's body.
A century-old soul ring truly looked superior to the ten-year ones.
It was clearer, shone more brightly, and contained far more energy.
After a brief wait, a yellow soul ring appeared.
Fang Ling's heart surged with emotion, and he once again thanked the headmaster.
Then, he sat down, summoned his soul power, and began the absorption process.
Nerve-reflex soul skill… and his most important new specialty, come on!
The yellow soul ring began to float toward the scythe in Fang Ling's right hand.
As the century-old ring approached, he felt a subtle pressure.
His body tensed slightly.
After a moment of nervousness, Fang Ling calmed himself.
Such a weak soul beast, could he really fail to absorb it?
Impossible. Absolutely impossible!
The yellow ring reached his head and suddenly contracted into a dense soul ring, only the size of a bracelet.
It snapped directly onto his scythe martial soul.
