Chapter 19: What a Pity
"How many levels are you?"
"Level six," Fang Ling replied without hiding anything.
"How old are you?"
"Seven."
Qian Yao repeated his words and nodded slightly.
His talent was decent, good enough to be accepted into the Spirit Hall Academy.
With that thought in mind, he asked, "Fang kid, you've got talent and guts. Do you want to join the Spirit Hall Academy?"
"I can join? My innate soul power is only level one."
Fang Ling had once wanted to join the Spirit Hall Academy.
It was directly under the control of the Spirit Hall, offering the best education and the strongest instructors in the world.
But when he inquired at the Spirit Hall branch in Nuoding City, they told him that only those with at least level three innate soul power would be accepted.
To put it bluntly, they didn't take in trash.
Though they said it nicely, that was how Fang Ling understood it.
Later, he discovered that points could be gained through killing. That meant the City of Slaughter was essential.
Because of that, he had to go to the Heaven Dou Royal Academy and get the immortal herbs before Tang San did. Driven by pride and determination, he gave up on the Spirit Hall Academy.
"Level one! It's been just over a year, and you're now level six?" Qian Yao's face showed surprise. His expression turned serious. "Don't move!"
He placed a hand on Fang Ling's shoulder.
Holy light-type soul power gently entered Fang Ling's body, circulated once, and found nothing unusual.
The soul power was pure and clear, not tainted with the bloodlust or evil aura typical of fallen soul masters.
He was slightly relieved and let out a helpless sigh. "Level one is a bit low. It's not surprising that you've advanced quickly, but your potential won't go far."
"Sorry, your talent is a bit lacking. We can't recommend you."
In the past, it might have been possible, but things changed when Bibi Dong became the Pope.
For some reason, although she was the closest disciple of the former Pope, she had a serious rift with the Angel Clan and the Angel Legion.
The Grand Priest stayed silent, and the Angel Legion didn't have the strength to resist.
Many things were now restricted, and everything had to follow the rules.
He wasn't going to risk a punishment just to get a kid into the academy.
Fang Ling wasn't really interested in going to Spirit Hall Academy anymore, so he just nodded calmly. "It's fine."
Then he rubbed his fingers together and asked, like a little money-grubber, "I seem to recall there's a reward for killing a fallen soul master?"
Qian Yao nodded. "There is, but one who just reached the first ring is too weak. The reward is only twenty gold soul coins."
"To me, that's already a lot." Fang Ling was genuinely happy.
The money didn't matter much, it was fine to have it, fine not to. What really mattered were the points!
"Money aside, I'll issue a certificate for you."
Qian Yao pulled out twenty gleaming gold soul coins, put them into an ordinary gray pouch, and handed it to Fang Ling.
Then, a faint glow flashed in his hand. From what looked like a ragged ring, he took out a board and a piece of pale golden paper.
A storage soul tool!
In the current era, long after the ancient soul tool civilization had collapsed and with very few legacies remaining, these were extremely rare and precious items.
Tang San already had one, thanks to Yu Xiaogang's gift.
But for someone like Fang Ling, with no background and no money, all he could do was watch enviously.
Qian Yao said, "This is just a basic certificate. There are advanced versions too, symbolizing honor in the hunt against fallen soul masters."
He took out a seal.
Fang Ling clearly saw that it had three pairs of wings carved into it.
Qian Yao removed the cap of the seal, infused it with divine soul power, and firmly stamped the certificate against Fang Ling's scythe, leaving a golden seal.
The seal shimmered brightly under the sunlight.
Fang Ling accepted the certificate and began reading it word by word, still not very fluent:
"Hereby certifies that Nuoding Academy student Fang Ling, age seven, soul power level six, martial soul: scythe, on May 21, year 2638 of the Douluo Calendar, killed a one-ring fallen soul master with a Vampire Bat martial soul in battle outside Nuoding City."
"Witnessed by Qian Yaolong, Qian Feiguang, and Qian Zhaolong of the Angel Legion Demon Hunting Squad, Spirit Hall."
Qian Yao smiled. "This paper and seal are special. In sunlight, they glow brilliantly and can't be forged. Only we have them."
"If you show this when applying to a mid-level soul master academy, it might bring unexpected benefits."
"Thank you, Brother Qian," Fang Ling said, visibly excited.
"It's us who should thank you for reducing our workload."
Qian Yao ruffled Fang Ling's hair, then decapitated the fallen soul master and placed the head in a sealed box.
He sprinkled some powder Fang Ling didn't recognize on it, sealed it, and began digging a grave to prevent any outbreak of disease.
Seeing Fang Ling still standing around watching, he laughed and said,
"Fang kid, we've got business to attend to. This is where we part."
"Alright, Brother Qian. I'm off then."
Fang Ling waved goodbye and turned to leave.
A few moments later, he suddenly realized something and ran back. "Brother Qian, wait, I have a question!"
"What is it?" One of them paused mid-dig, looking puzzled.
"Well, it can't be that he just turned into a fallen soul master like that, right? Does he have some powerful master or elder behind him who'll come for revenge?"
"Haha!" Qian Yao burst out laughing.
He leaned the shovel against a tree, pulled out another box from his soul tool, and opened it.
Inside was a slightly shriveled human head.
He shook it at Fang Ling, the head rolled inside the box. "This was his teacher, a fallen Soul Sect."
"That bat kid managed to escape because the three of us were surrounding his teacher."
"Luckily, you killed him before anything went wrong."
He scratched his head awkwardly.
Once Fang Ling confirmed there was no powerful backer to worry about, he finally felt relieved.
His biggest fear was angering a junior and having some terrifying elder come for revenge.
If that happened, he wouldn't even be able to kill a pig, let alone defend himself.
His only choice would've been to stay huddled at the academy and never leave Xiao Wu's side.
Being near Xiao Wu meant being near Tang San, and Tang San had Tang Hao protecting him.
By riding Tang San's coattails, he'd love to see how that fallen soul master could do anything.
Now that Qian Yao had explained things, all his worries disappeared.
"Brother Qian Yao, Brother Qian Feiguang, Brother Qian Zhaolong, I'm off. I hope we meet again someday."
"Haha, goodbye, Fang Ling."
Fang Ling walked down the road, tucking the pouch of gold soul coins securely into his clothes.
He folded the important certificate and stored it carefully.
Then he skipped happily toward the slaughterhouse.
He'd gained points, reached level six, earned twenty gold soul coins, and received a certificate for killing a fallen soul master.
Fallen soul masters really were treasures.
What a great day!
The angels truly lived up to their name, holy to the core.
They even had a dedicated demon-hunting squad. No wonder the fallen soul masters were their responsibility to eliminate.
People like Qian Xunji, that utterly useless excuse for a six-winged Holy Angel, were the real monsters, the true heretics.
Fang Ling cursed Qian Xunji in his heart and felt much better afterward.
But he also felt a hint of worry.
Killing a one-ring soul master had given him a full point!
A regular person or a pig only gave one percent of that.
Could it be that the higher your level, the more points you needed?
He didn't have enough information now. He'd just have to take things one step at a time and observe how the panel changed.
He arrived at the slaughterhouse.
Old Liu found it a little odd. "Why are you a bit late today, little Fang Ling?"
Fang Ling smiled and shook his head. "Nothing much. Just wasn't paying attention and tripped."
He didn't tell them the truth, no need to worry them.
"You're not hurt, right?" Old Liu asked quickly.
"I'm fine! I'm going to be a Battle Soul Master, agile as can be!"
