Chapter 892: Join the Rangers
The smite skill that erupted in the night sky carried an unbearable power and it left all those present with ears ringing in a high pitch tone, except Charlie whose cryptid nature caused her to lose all the skin on the front of her body that was exposed which due to her revealing attire was most of her. Thankfully, she was able to regenerate in an instant also due to her cryptid nature. But just because no one died after the insurmountable power being unleashed out of nowhere did not mean everything was fine as the one responsible for activating the smite skill fell down like a sack of potatoes after spending most if not all of his flux energy.
"Medic!" Shouted Miss Dragonfang as she caught Soulfire before he even fell. "Don't worry, my love, you will be fine." She wiped a loving tear from her eye before attempting to kiss him, though instead of the warm sensation she was striving for she was met with a hard leather boot.
"At least let him die with dignity!" Uriel snarled.
"I'm telling on my dad...," Lizzie retreated a couple meters with a broken nose and a sore mouth, then processed what Uriel just said and rebuked. "there's no way he's going to die."
"I wouldn't be so sure." Said Luna with a tone as cold as Soulfire felt to the touch.
"If this happened somewhere with little flux energy that could be the case, but dying from flux deprivation inside a megacity is unlikely. Actually, our biggest worry right now are the lightseekers." Sam explained.
"Yeah, someone should totally do something about them. That skill was literally a beacon for all cryptids to see." Nika said, then Medusa added.
"The most efficient thing to do would be to turn off the city lights."
"Someone should do that..." Uriel said.
All of those statements came accompanied with nods of approval, yet nobody moved. Not even Sharp, whose work was to take care of cryptids and at some point the loud screeches of the lightseekers could be heard at a distance causing everyone to start worrying.
"Guys, maybe we should leave the city for a while." Nika proposed to her friends, though the entirety of the Dungeon Raiders were already hoping aboard the ship and had left her alone.
"Wait! You guys will want to see this." Said charlie, her newly regenerated skin smooth as a baby's.
Uriel hesitated before climbing off the ship, though he found suspicious that not even Sharp moved when the cryptids drew near and curiosity got the best of him. From the airport they were all able to see how the lightseekers, awful creatures that would stop at nothing to reach any source of light, flew straight to the air space of the city.
The automated cannons placed on the walls started doing their work and some shots were fired from the top of the walls hinting that albeit not many, the rangers were still present at all hours on the walls.
No one but Sam could see what they looked like or count them, but the sheer sound that resounded through the starless night was enough to indicate their numbers were far greater than any weapon devised by humans could deal with.
Things did not look great for the city of New Texas, but that only lasted until the sacred barrier activated from every corner of the wall creating a field much similar to a dome that surrounded the city entirely.
Lightseekers clashed against the barrier the same as birds would against a window, though instead of harmless animals they were powerful cryptids that depending on their numbers could prove to be dangerous even for the most powerful of hunters. And the same could be said about firearms, that despite being ineffective in the sense that cryptids could regenerate swiftly from most wounds, in numbers and with enough time they were able to take down an incredible amount of cryptids causing a strange phenomenon were their flux orbs started raining down on the city.
"This is surely a show worth seeing." Uriel said as he caught a beast level orb right before it touched the ground.
Soulfire was taken to the medical bay of the Pegasus, again, to treat him for his flux deprivation, again, though this time Nika had to stay up all night keeping watch on the medical bay with a broom to chase Miss Dragonfang away from 'the love of her life'.
"I will get my revenege!" Miss Dragonfang hissed at Nika as she retreated after receiving the full brunt of a broom strike in the head.
That night, the only one who was able to learn the smite skill ended up being Soulfire and while Uriel thought he came really close to getting the grasp of it, the only way to confirm it was to actually use the skill which he did not want to do for two reasons. The first being that he did not want to spend all his flux energy even though he could replenish it by using a three tier 3 batteries and the second, that he did not want to let the others know he might be able to use it. That way he could keep the skill as the ace up the sleeve it was supposed to be instead of a predictable move.
Despite their failure, most of those present still valued the experience and the insight on the use of skills. Even if it didn't sound like much, the way Luna put it really helped them understand that they could train themselves on how to better use their skills and traits.
But the excitement was not shared by all as Charlie realized she would never be able to learn the skill and even if she could, it would not be in her best interest to do so. If just being exposed to the light that came indirectly from the skill was enough to peel of her skin like a baked potato, she shivered at the thought of what could happen if that skill came out from her body.
Because of that she asked for a meeting with Uriel who surprisingly actually listened to her and proposed a deal. In exchange for being released of his company's responsibility for what Luna did downtown, Uriel offered his company's services to the Rangers for free and Charlie took him up on the offer right away.
It was convenient to her in the sense that, even though they didn't need to appoint as many rangers to the walls as they did before possessing the technology to create an anti cryptid barrier, they still had plenty of cases to work inside the city and a perimeter to defend in the wilderness. Particularly the outposts that needed to be constantly checked and resupplied, which was usually done by ground vehicles. With the help of a zeppelin instead, the same run that could take days or even weeks could be done in a day or two.
But as strange as it may sound, working under the rangers for free was also convenient to Uriel because he was unable to set foot outside the city due to the curse that afflicted him and working cases inside the city was akin to giving him the chance to fight cryptids while also placing him in the best locations to gather information about the Defenders. The fact that he did it for free meant that he would have the liberty to work whichever case he wanted and since Uriel was already a ranger, he did not even need any sort of training which meant he could start right away.
His excitement was not shared throughout the company in general and though everyone expected Luna to be against the idea, it ended up being her agreeing what convinced the rest to also get on board with the idea.
Needless to say, Luna not complaining was only because of the regret she felt for being the direct cause of what happened. She regretted taking lives, losing control and also regretted causing her company to lose money, but what she regretted the most was causing Uriel so much trouble.
After saying goodbye to his friends, Uriel followed Charlie outside the airport, though he stopped her before she got into the taxi.
"What do you think you're doing?" Uriel asked.
"Taking you to the headquarters, of course." Charlie replied.
"Not in that, you're not." Uriel sighed. He wasn't against the use of mass transportation, but he knew Sam was probably watching him and didn't want him to look down on him which is why he summoned his Jaguar spirit.
After hopping in and extending a hand to Charlie, Uriel commanded the mystical beast to take him to the ranger headquarters and it happily complied by racing across the street and disappearing in a blue flash of light.
Little did Uriel know that Sam not only was not paying any attention to him at that moment, but was actually fighting for dear life when the wild girl started attacking him seemingly out of nowhere and for no good reason.
