Chapter 882: The red meeting Part 1
Mark sat through yet another quarterly report of his company with a serious bearing while seemingly listening intently to the discussions, though that was only a facade. He did not understand most of what was being said and it may as well been in another language. The charts presented to him made no sense no matter how he looked at them and the only thing he thought when looking at a pie chart was that he would have liked a piece of pie, though he also didn't like pie that much and just wanted an excuse to exit the meeting.
It turned out that being the CEO of an important company such as the Jacobs was not nearly as fun and extravagant as he imagined. Shouting orders at his employees and scolding them when they made mistakes was easy enough, but when it came to actual leadership or anything that included hard work, Mark was at a total loss.
He pictured himself as a debonair living a fancy lifestyle and while he lacked nothing, he also couldn't say he had achieved anything other than being forced to sit and pretend he listened to boring numbers he could care less about.
His employees, of course, knew that Mark could not understand a word they were saying and would often times make fun of him behind his back. But while Mark could not understand, the same did not apply to the creature dwelling in his body.
The eclipse not only understood, but was also gaining a firm grasp on human society, economics and politics. Learning from humans was the one silver lining of being attached to such an unremarkable host, but at times the poor cryptid longed for the times he was trapped inside the skin cover of the book of the dead.
'At least then there was no such thing as second hand embarrassment.' The eclipse thought as the accountant explained how the company's funds were rapidly depleting and without investment they would likely go under. The maintenance costs alone were excruciating, but the partnership with the Celes company was like a black hole that sucked in all the money the Jacobs company made by rebuilding the city of New Texas. The economic situation was so bad for the company, not even by rebuilding two more cities would be enough to pay for the upkeep of Mark's lavish lifestyle and the Celes laboratory.
The problem with that was that they had already received a considerable sum of money from the Hathaway company, though Mark decided it was best to buy a few Nikolas, build a few mansions and even a skyscraper with his name without taking into consideration that the things he bought also came with an upkeep cost. If anything, the only smart move Mark made was to buy some 'priceless' artifacts which actually did have a price tag, an exorbitant one at that.
In the old times it may have seemed like a waste of money, but the fact that those artifacts emitted a flux signature meant they had to be useful for something. He had yet to learn what some of them did and grow accustomed to the ones he did find out their purpose, but even with his little knowledge about ancient artifacts he was now stronger than the day before.
At some point during the accountant's rant about finances Mark's expression shifted out of a sudden into one of shock making the poor man think his boss did understand what he was saying and was about to blame him for his alleged mistake when in reality there was nothing he could have done to stop him from buying shiny things.
However, the reason for Mark's expression shift had nothing to do with the meeting at all but with a seemingly harmless phenomenon he experienced. He noticed something in the corner of his eye and when he tried to look at it, it was as though he could not focus his eyes on it.
He saw it, but for some reason his brain refused to process that information and instead sent just the thought that something was there. Any hunter experienced enough would have assumed it was a cryptid, but a cryptid showing up out of nowhere in an office building was very unlikely. There was also the fact that, had any cryptid been present, the eclipse would have warned his host as it was in both their best interests for Mark to know.
That left only one alternative and Mark did not like it in the slightest and would have rather fight a cryptid than the person who showed up uninvited and unannounced.
"Get out of this building!" Mark shouted and the room fell into an eerie silence as the employees looked awkwardly towards each other exchanging glances that said 'he's crazy'. Uncaring of the present mood, Mark then barked at his employee. "call security."
The shadows twisted uncannily everywhere as though dancing to the rythm of a moody candle despite the room being perfectly lit, then the figure of a man riding a jaguar emerged from the corner.
"So you noticed my presence..." Uriel said, both him and his jaguar with eyes of the same shade of blue brimming in seething anger. The employees were startled for a second, then an uproar followed as everyone panicked trying exit the room, though there were only two exits. One was blocked by Uriel and the other being the window, at such height none of those alternatives looked appealing.
"I'm not the same as the last time we fought." Mark said.
"Do you mean when I kicked your ass for being a nuisance? I still don't forget what you did back then."
"When I helped you!?"
"No, when you took Mason out to safety. You have no idea how troublesome it's been to get rid of the Society and it's all on you, but I'm not here because of that." Uriel said at the same moment security showed up.
Without so much as speaking, three guards threw themselves at Uriel though the jaguar swiped them off with nothing but a paw causing them not much damage other than a few broken bones, a slicing wound on the chest that would likely conduce to bleeding out and damage to internal organs due to the force of the crash against the alloy wall.
"At least it'll be an open casket." Uriel shrugged, then another hunter showed up and this time the jaguar emitted a low growl. It was a warning that the hunter in question was likely a heavenly rank hunter or maybe even a holy rank hunter.
Security was not supposed to be so high, but with Mark living in the paranoia that Uriel was following everywhere he went there was no such thing as a lax security.
The newcomer hunter showed up his skill with a sword that then turned into two. He waved his hands in the air so rapidly it seemed as though his arms multiplied, then they actually did multiply as the hunter activated his trait.
With around eight arms and each hand holding a sword, the man continued his sword dance in front of everyone. Such was his dexterity he could have turned anyone into minced meat with the sharp blades he wielded with the martial prowess Uriel had only seen in Medusa.
However, after cancelling the summon of his jaguar to fully appreciate the spectacle and letting the man perform his act, Uriel grabbed his magnum and fired a single shot that painted the window pane behind the man with red and drew perfectly round hole in the glass.
"How dare you come into my office and kill my people!?" Mark stood up, his skin crawling in the shadowy presence of the horror level eclipse.
"Isn't it bothersome when someone does that? Because that is precisely what I'm here to discuss. You broke into your brother's house and stole his belongings, I need you to give them back." Uriel said coldly. While he spoke, one of Mark's employees attempted to crawl her way out of the office hoping that her presence would not be noticed due to her not being a huntress. Uriel cocking his gun made her stop in her tracks leaving her no alternative than to beg for her life.
"Please, just let me go... I have a family."
"I have one too and it's not so great, I don't get why people keep bragging about having a family before dying." He said as he pulled the trigger.
"She was innocent!" Mark shouted.
"I will spare no fucking one." He said as he fired another shot and killing another of Mark's employees prompting one of the few hunters present at the meeting to jump off the window. He thought and hoped he would survive the fall, he didn't.
"Stop, I said stop!" Said Mark when another of his employees fell.
"Just give me what I want and I'll be on my way." Uriel grinned before firing once more, though this time the bullet didn't cause any damage and the room went completely dark.
