Dungeon Raider System

Chapter 870: Summoning the god of death

It was the morning of the next day when a knocking on the door announced the arrival of the people the Dungeon Raiders called, though they did not expect them to show up so fast and were not ready at all for the chaos that ensued when Dana Morrigan, also known as Thanatos, pushed past Medusa and looked everywhere for Uriel.

"Where is he!? Who does he think he is!? Does he really think he can summon me and not pay the consequences!?" Dana screamed all over the place as she rolled up her sleeves.

"I'm out." Said Nika after seeing Dana, not necessarily because she was the god of death but because her demeanor reminded her too much of her early childhood. The only thing Dana was missing was the mighty 'chancla' in the hand, but that would have likely gotten Nika to pass out before even managing to sink into Uriel's shadow.

"What is all this noise? People are sleeping." Uriel walked down the stairs as he scratched the back of his disheveled hair.

"You! Do you think just because you are my son I am at your beckon call? You can't summon me whenever you want to do what you want, that is not how it works."

"I did not do such thing," Uriel shrugged as he casually walked by Dana to get some breakfast, courtesy of Thomas. The night before he made dinner and while he proved to be a better cook than Medusa since he knew german and french cuisine like the back of his hand, Uriel thought Medusa looked better in the apron.

"Lying to your mother is..."

"Medusa wanted to spend some time with her uncle, as for being my mother... I don't have one."

"Did you hear what he said to me!? Jon!? Can you believe this!?" Dana's anger seemingly subsided for one second as she started to cry, but then it became even worse.

"Yo, kid. Doing alright?" Jon said casually as he walked in.

"Can't complain, how about you?" Uriel replied in the same fashion.

"Same old, just working my way to divinity I guess," He said with his trademark shit eating grin that made Uriel want to punch him in the face. However, with just a glance Uriel was able to confirm Jon was stronger than the last time they saw each other. "but this trials, they're killing me."

"I swear to myself, if you don't apologize this second I'll reap someone," Dana looked intently towards Medusa, then Uriel, then Jon and finally settled with Thomas. "that guy! I'll reap him!"

"Go ahead, I dare you." Uriel said with the kind of smile that now made the fact that he was indeed Jon's son obvious.

Watching the scene, Medusa also understood why she became infatuated with Uriel from the moment she laid eyes on him. After all, her first crush had been none other than her adoptive uncle and Uriel's vague resemblance to him was what drew her in from the beginning.

"I'll do it, I'll really do it." Dana threatened as she walked towards Thomas, but when the man in question didn't so much as flinch she second guessed herself. She already suspected Uriel wanted something out of her, but now she was certain and he had no choice but to come clean.

"I would appreciate it if you do it, really." Uriel said.

"So I was right all along! This is all your fault, that sneaky and shady character is obviously from your side." Dana scoffed.

"Sure," Jon shrugged dismissively, then added. "If anything, that's a compliment."

"To you, maybe," Uriel grunted and pointed at the seats in front of him prompting the newcomers to join him in breakfast. "here's the thing. My friend wants to die, but we can't help him."

"Then maybe you should start working your way to the holy rank instead of playing with women." Dana scoffed. Being nagged by his mother for playing instead of working hard scratched an itch Uriel did not know he had and although it felt somewhat good, he still was far from acknowledging Dana as his mother.

"Hey! It's my niece you're talking about!" Jon glared at Dana, though her purple glare was sharper than a dagger and he could not hold the stare for long.

"It's not that I'm too weak to do it, it's that he can only die during a full moon and we can't wait that long."

"And why should I help you? Huh? Your father and I have business to attend and you brought us here just because you couldn't be bothered to wait a couple weeks. Besides, you already said you don't see me as your mother which means I have no good reason to help you." Dana glared at Uriel, but contrary to Jon he did not feel uncomfortable staring into the depths of her purple eyes.

"And yet, you came," Uriel intertwined his fingers before continuing as though he was about to present a business deal. "we already have a way to bypass the full moon. My friend's trait works in the same way, which means we can put my friend to rest. If we didn't have the means to do this, then I would not have called you. Can you guess why?"

"Because..." Dana started speaking as soon as Uriel finished, yet no answer came to mind and she lingered way past the point of getting awkward and Jon couldn't take it anymore.

"You wanted to assess what kind of relationship we can develop by asking us to help you with something. Our willingness would have an impact on your decision, but you chose something you didn't actually need our help with to avoid feeling indebted."

"Precisely, it's easy to say you're parents, but you weren't there when I needed you. If I couldn't count with you back then and I can't do it now, then you're just strangers to me." Uriel nodded.

"It's different, I'm a god. My power goes far beyond what you can imagine and the responsibility I hold over the natural balance is absolute," Dana heaved a long sigh without taking her eyes from Uriel's. "besides, there is a reason why gods can't intervene with mortals too much. Jon mentioned you already know how to become a holy rank hunter, which is by absorbing a certain amount of flux energy and souls from your same species. But the path to godhood is different, for that you must overcome trials with the blessing of a god, but if they help you too much you won't ever be able to reach what you would call the divine rank which is the ultimate power any being can acquire."

Uriel tried to hide his shock, but the clacking noise caused by the cutlery in his hand made it impossible. However, it could be argued he was actually under reacting because at that moment he finally understood his first encounter with Water Warlock.

He remember something about the trials being mentioned and that they could only be performed by the strongest of his kind, which meant that Chichén Itzá was designed so that only the strongest hunter could reach Water Warlock. This meant that the one who was meant to gain his blessing had to be of the divine rank which in turn meant that Water Warlock had to be even more powerful than a god.

He also understood that Ponce de Leon, who would later change his name to Saint Germain, actually failed the trials. He claimed that he did find the fountain of youth, but for all Uriel knew he may as well become a hunter thanks to the deaths of his men and who knows how many natives. This brought Uriel to question Saint Germain's true reasons for wanting to kill Water Warlock, though he did not disagree in the slightest as that being was far too dangerous to exist.

"Did the cat eat your tongue?" Jon said with a smirk thinking Uriel was taken aback by learning it was possible for humans to reach the divine rank.

"And that is why I can't help you." Dana finished.

"I understand that," Uriel said after composing himself thanks to Jon being annoying. "but that means we can not have any sort of relationship. I'd rather keep my distance."

"Now, don't rush things. It's not like we don't want to help you, but we're busy. There is a reason why I must become a god and you should probably look into reaching the holy rank soon." Jon said in a hurry.

"That is true, you see..." Dana lingered for a few seconds, then fell silent. There was no easy way to tell Uriel his days were counted since the moment the gods laid their eyes upon him. Keeping Uriel safe was the only reason why both Dana and Jon had been working so hard for the latter to reach the divine rank. It was extenuating for Dana and incredibly dangerous for Jon, which explained why Dana was angry and in a rush all the time.

"I have an idea!" Medusa broke through the dense atmosphere with a cheerful tone of voice when she thought she figured out a way that would solve everything.
