Chapter 866: Extra 6

After eating the Gevaudan, Luna's body was in poor condition which prevented her from performing even the tasks regular humans would consider menial. Although she did not show it on her face, every movement she made was painful, though she hoped she would eventually recover.

Unfortunately to her, the process was not fast enough and she was left outside the battlefield once more. Fighting had never been her strong suit and she didn't care much for the hunting part of traveling, but one thing she didn't like was feeling like a hindrance to her group.

As a doctor, she knew that her place was not necessarily in the front lines, but her being disabled meant she needed help for literally everything and she needed protection at all times.

"I... Really dislike firearms." Luna said to Nika who pushed the Peacemaker directly in front of her face.

"Too bad, we can't have you rolling your wheelchair or whatever without the means to protect yourself."

"I can defend myself." Luna rebuked.

"Really, what are you going to do if a beast level cryptid hops on you while you're alone?"

"I'll bite it." Luna replied.

"Did you not learn it's not a good idea to eat cryptids?" Nika facepalmed.

"I said bite, not swallow."

"For crying out loud, Uriel, tell her she needs to learn how to use firearms!" Nika shouted.

"What do you want me to do? I can't even get her to see a doctor." Uriel replied annoyed.

"I am a highly qualified doctor and I'm fine. Besides, my body is undergoing an interesting process It'd like to keep private." Luna countered to which Uriel replied even more annoyed.

"Privacy didn't seem to matter much to you when you tried to roll your wheelchair into the bathroom when I was taking a shower."

"You refuse to seek medical attention for your condition and you are not a doctor."

"This is going nowhere, if you like your logic so much then how about this. You are a burden to us right now and you can't even defend yourself." Nika huffed.

"I am not refusing to learn, but firearms..."

"How about archery? I can teach you horseback archery! I even have some bows laying around that can be quite powerful if you use them properly." Uriel's idea had a better reception than he hoped as Luna seemed not just inclined to accept but eager to do so.

Luna pictured herself moving across the battlefield firing arrows at the enemies and it brought a spark to her eyes. IIt would allow her to make the most of Babieca as the war mount he was and Luna promptly followed Uriel outside.

He handed her the bow and recited the instructions step by step, luna nodding every time before doing as he said. She cleared her mind, exhaled, relaxed her arms and then tensed the bow with a sizeable amount of force. She repeated the e process many times adjusting the posture with Uriel's help until he was satisfied with the result and handed her an arrow.

She repeated the process, this time knocking back a stone arrow. The string tensed under the pressure of Luna's grip and the moment she let the string go the arrow fell a meter from her position. Luna remained silent but red in the face and it would have been easy to assume it was embarrassment, but in reality she was experiencing pain.

Despite her tiny stature, Luna was actually quite well endowed, a fact everyone missed even Luna herself. And when the string was released it hit her breast with such power it made Nika instinctively cup her own breasts.

"I'm say that rules bows out." Said Nika.

"I should have given her a chest guard..." Uriel reflected in hindsight.

The Humvee bobbed up and down as it made its way across the open desert and Captain Silvermane didn't miss the chance to stick his head out of the vehicle to catch the unhindered sight of the natural landscape. He could not have enough of the natural beauty and even the dry breeze was a gift to him after spending so many years confined inside city walls. He was a simple man and a soldier, as such it was the small things that brought him joy.

Coming back after a successful incursion to cull the cryptids near the base and experiencing the calm beauty of a sunset, life could not get any better than that and it certainly didn't. Because the moment the vehicle stopped in front of the fort he noticed something odd.

The two soldiers who were supposed to be appointed at the door were nowhere to be seen and the moment he realized it, it was as though someone hat flipped the switch on the sunset and it suddenly became night.

"Ridge, stay close." He said grabbing his pistol with one hand and a knife with the other. An unusual combination of weapons that worked for him thanks to all the years he spent training students for melee combat.

His confidence was not unfounded as he had even managed to fight a werewolf that ran amok for a brief period of time in the university, but he knew full well that back then he had help and while incredibly efficient at her job, Ridge was no fighter.

"Copy that." Stuttered Ridge as she grabbed not her weapon, but her own chest as if to prevent her heart from popping out. Despite this, her heartbeat became drums that encompassed a walk she made every day but now felt as if she was on the death row.

The distance from the precinct's entrance to the base was short and unhindered, yet Silvermane decided to make a stealth approach meaning it took them much longer to reach their destination and in that time, they did not see or hear a single soul.

A dim light cleaved out through the slit of the door and Silvermane pushed it ever so slowly in order to take a peek inside and what he saw made his eyes widened and stutter in shock. Then, throwing caution and stealth to the wind, the captain darted inside to check on the people lying in the ground.

"They're dead!" Gasped Ridge and she allowed herself a full second of panic before getting to work. The first step was to secure the perimeter and to do that she grabbed an electronic device meant for detecting powerful cryptids.

It was a small gadget that contained LED bulbs protected with different layers of insulation. Each light was associated with a level of cryptids, the one related with beast rank cryptids was unprotected meaning it would be turned off the moment a beast rank cryptid came near but the same didn't happen with the second light which was protected by a faraday cage. For that light to be turned off it meant a cryptid of at least monster level had to be present. The third light was protected by an insulation layer devised by the Mapple corporation, it was a trademark secret though it was nothing but a thin wire made of orichalcum.

There were no more lights as detecting horror level cryptids was impossible due to them being so cunning as to remain on standby, a state similar to sleeping, unless it was time to feed. It meant that by the time someone detected their presence it would already be too late to do anything about it.

"This makes no sense, all the lights are on." Ridge informed, allowing Captain Silvermane to heave a relieved sigh, though when he turned his head to look at the lieutenant she had her service weapon pointed at her head and the gunshot echoed before the Captain had the chance to intervene.

Silverman ried out loud and reached or the fallen lieutenant, uncaring of his own safety, but there was nothing he could do. He was a simple man and did not possess the means to investigate what happened, but even if he did, he had little interest in finding out what happened since therewas nothing he could do to revive those who fell.

Every single person inside the base, be them soldiers, guests, refugees, working personnel, all of them were dead and Silvermane was the sole survivor of an event that defied all logic.

He fell on his knees, stuttering curses at the ceiling pondering about taking his own life for no other reason than the sense of utter failure he experienced after every single person under his care died. And that is when he heard it, it was faint at first and the words were unintelligible.

It was as though he picked up a call with someone who didn't speak English and while he did not know the language, he could understand the other party was trying to confirm whether or not he could understand.

What happened next changed everything for the Captain as he felt a surge of power like he had never experienced before, even though he started his career as an ascended. But the leap from his current rank to the holy rank was even higher and he experienced for the first time the almighty sensation of raw power coursing through his body.
