Chapter 861: Extra 1

Incident report.

Date: classified.

Location: South district, New Texas.

>After being brought to the attention of the head of the Cryptid hunting agency the possibility that the creature responsible for the missing people in the south district could be a wendigo, a conjoined force was set up between the agency, the rangers and the army.

The entire force was comprised of around 400 hunters ranging from evolved to heavenly rank, 10 ATVs, 7 tanks, 4 self propelled artillery vehicles and several civilian grade vehicles.

>On the morning of the REDACTED the conjoined forces stormed the south district without emitting alerts to the civilians as a precaution taken due to entity level cryptids alleged high intelligence. The main avenue was secured within minutes and the base of operations was set up at the plaza.

>Ranger REDACTED took charge of the scouting operation with the use of units specialized in tracking. What follows is a video record of her operation:

"Hee haw! The first one to spot it gets a kiss on the cheek." Charlie appeared mounted on top of an ATV that moved at a high speed, her foothold so solid she didn't so much as budge from her spot when the vehicle braked to a full stop.

What followed was around a hundred rangers moving with the same dissonant coordination possessed by a beehive as they scattered across the streets of the south district which was now where the city farms were located.

Planting crops within city walls was only possible due to its reduced population as they now had more space than they knew what to use it for, but it worked wonders to stop the citizens from starving after the trying times they endured. However, these were not old school farms but rather skyscrappers designed to make the most of the scarce sunlight that would leak from the tall walls that enclosed the megacity.

This should have worked against the rangers whose traits and abilities were suited for outdoors and scouting inside the buildings was the army's specialization, but that was not the case as Charlie's unit possessed something unique. A form of power that could not be taught and had little to do with a trait and more with a certain condition.

The video ended shortly after a bunch of hunters exited a certain building by the airport with various degrees of wounds. Some were simply battered, but others were missing limbs as though they were attacked by sharks.

>According to a witness, the cryptid in question was found feasting on a corpse and while the depiction provided by the witness of the creature somewhat resembled that of a wendigo, its identity could not be confirmed due to poor light conditions.

The building was surrounded on all sides by the conjoined force to ensure the cryptid's path of escape was cut and the safety of the citizens was tasked to the rangers who proceeded to evacuate the adjacent blocks.

Colonel REDACTED received clearance for use of heavy artillery on the building, instructing them to target the pillars that sustained the building hence debilitating its structural integrity and bring it on the verge of collapse.

What follows is a record of Colonel REDACTED operation:

"That's right guys, smoke em out!" A tall woman dressed in a neat uniform pointed at the places where the artillery was supposed to target. It wasn't her finger what marked the spot, though, but the controlled explosions she caused with pinpoint accuracy thanks to her trait.

Those who knew her before she met a certain lieutenant could barely recognize the girl she used to be with the soldier she now was. Mayhem held a professional attitude and used a commanding voice that weighed more than her rank as she moved her soldiers across the field like pawns on a chessboard to save ammunition while causing the most damage.

Her newfound discipline paid off greatly and not just in the sense of making her stronger, she also studied to become a demolition expert to the point where she could be considered the top on a field that was saturated with hunters.

The previously reinforced alloy building that could have withstood the onslaught of a giant cryptid now rocked like a Jenga tower when a player made a wrong move, yet it didn't fall as it wasn't their intention to bring down the building just yet.

Burrowing a cryptid under tons of heavy material could cause its death, but there was the possibility that it might escape and with so many resources poured in the operation it was something none of the institutions involved could afford.

>The cryptid in question did not appear in spites of the army's efforts. The field specialists who had previously stated for the record that a wendigo was unlikely to be involved due to them supposedly possessing a fast metabolism that would kill them if they didn't feed on humans for long periods of time attempted to redirect the efforts of the army to bring the cryptid out on favor of actively hunting it.

>Head of the Cryptid hunting agency REDACTED made the executive decision of setting a siege in place stating it was the only certain way to rule the possibility of a wendigo being involved. According to REDACTED, she had an anonymous informant with direct experience dealing with wendigos who provided her with privileged information about the cryptid in question.

>On the morning of the REDACTED the cryptid made its move.

According to several witnesses It appeared to be a formless mass of flesh impossible to recognize as human, but whether or not that was its original appearance or if it was due to the heavy gunfire constantly destroying its body has yet to be confirmed.

The immediate casualties caused by the cryptid rose up to 93 hunters, 20 evolved, 42 ascended and 31 heavenly rank. The full extent of the victims is REDACTED.

Hunters involved on the operation report their wounds heal normally, but lost limbs do not regenerate even after applying a generous dose of Serum. According to field specialists this indicates the cryptid's ability to consume its prey in a fashion that lines up with the pre existent reports of wendigos such as case REDACTED.

>The presence of a horror level wendigo in the south district of the megacity of New Texas is confirmed.

A bounty of 7 million credits was placed on the cryptid by the local government.

This concludes the report.

Tina Celes, New Texas governor.

"Why are you showing me this? I was there." Charlie asked evidently annoyed for having to read such a boring paper.

"For fuck's sake, you dumbtits, it's right there," Sharp buried her head in the palms of her hands having a hard time to compose herself. She despised Charlie from the time she met her and that sentiment only grew with time. "look, I know you were there and so was I. We both lost a lot of good people in the south district fuck up and that is the only reason I asked you to come. Do you really not see anything suspicious?"

"Suspicious how?" Charlie tilted her head with a pensive finger on her lips. Had Sharp not been prepared for her idiocy she might have popped a vein in anger, but she just pointed to the reward on the report.

"The governor placed a bounty on the cryptid, a very juicy one, but if you look in our bounty list you won't find it there." Sharp said.

"Was the wendigo killed?" The seriousness of the situation and also the possibility that someone claimed the bounty on a cryptid so powerful it brought the conjoined forces of the three biggest powers on the city to a full retreat brought Charlie to finally behave like the head of the Rangers she was.

"That's the thing, the bounty was not collected, it was retracted. And yet, people stopped going missing at around the same time."

"A coincidence maybe?" Charlie said.

"Don't tell me you still believe in fucking coincidences, that's like believing in Santa or good people," Sharp huffed, then directed her one eye towards Charlie and leaned forward. "I think the governor is up to no good and I want you to help me find out what are they covering up."

"That's not going to happen," Charlie let out a sigh. "whatever it is they're covering up is deep underground in a reinforced alloy bunker and the vault door is like three meter thick. They have a biometric pattern recognition at the entrance and guards armed with plasma shoulder cannons that would give the Mapple corporate employees a run for their money."

"You're not a complete idiot after all." Sharp admitted.

The information exchange turned out to be more profitable for both parties than they first expected as they each possessed a piece of the puzzle. When put together, the only sensible explanation was that Tina Celes who was now the governor managed to somehow capture the wendigo and was now running experiments on it.

Unfortunately to both heads of their respective departments, the truth was even deeper and they were missing a key piece of evidence and the mystery of the Celes company would remain in the shadows, for now.
