Chapter 854: Family Vlog
With Jon out of the way, Dana had some time to speak alone with Uriel, though the conversation was brief and she exited the room shortly after allowing Uriel's closest friends to step inside the cafeteria. They didn't know what kind of conversation just transpired, but they knew enough to be prepared for Uriel to be distraught as the emotional burden was bound to be too much for anyone.
"Thanks for giving us some privacy." Uriel said as though nothing happened.
"Are you Okay?" Medusa leaned in to hug him, followed closely by Nika who did the same. Luna, on the other hand, reached with her arms in the air forcing Uriel to lean in.
"This is the least you could do for me, I had to roll this chair all the way across the battlefield and back." Luna said, her the straws on her silvery hair and her dirty hands proof of the truth behind her words.
"Of course I'm Okay, more than that even." Uriel said before placing the camera on the counter to start a Vlog.
"Is this really a good time for this? Actually, nevermind." The fact Uriel wanted to make a Vlog after finding his parents would have shocked Nika, but then she realized it was actually a good sign and rushed to check herself in a mirror to make sure she looked good.
"This is Uriel Sage's private Vlog, if that's even my name," He let out a sigh then turned to his friends. "apparenlty, my name is Uriel M Hunter, or maybe Uriel Morrigan Hunter, though my birth name was not Uriel. I'm sure."
"Yeah, uncle Jon always says his son's name was...." Medusa attempted to say, but Uriel shushed her with a hand.
"I don't care, it doesn't really matter. My family knows me as Uriel and that's what matters."
"At least this will stop you from trying to steal my mother." Luna's aloof sigh did manage to convey her relief, though only because they knew her well enough to know she wasn't joking.
"I don't think that's going to make Uriel's crush disappear." Said Nika with an amused look.
"Anyhow, in case you're questioning what was my 'mother' was doing inside the dungeon. She's the god of death and she was trapped inside."
"She really is the god of death!" Nika crossed herself three times, then three times more before composing herself. "that actually makes a lot of sense."
"It does," Medusa butted in with a knowing nod. "I always knew you were special."
"How? Like, really... does that make me a demi god? If that's the case, then how come I was so weak growing up."
"Don't think yourself to be special, if gods are out there and they can breed with humans, it's only fair to assume there are more people like you and probably not few. In fact, there's significant lore about that."
"True, it would be easier to list all the sons Zeus didn't have than the ones he did." Uriel let out a chuckle that died the moment he realized that most of human mythology was based on gods being either promiscuous, evil or both.
"So, what else did she tell you? Do you have her powers or something?"
"I didn't have much time to discuss things with her and I don't think she'll say much. I told her she might have birthed me but she's not my family, you guys are. She then said something that if I don't consider her family, then she doesn't have anything to tell me."
"Awww, that is so..." Nika said in a sweet voice, then finished gravely. "stupid."
"I know, but I couldn't help it." Uriel shrugged.
"What the hell happened here!?" Medusa lost focus on the conversation when she noticed the new hull breach in the cafeteria.
"That was Jon, I'll make sure to bill him." Uriel replied a half truth followed by his honest intention to charge him for the damage .
"Bill him? It needs to be fixed right now!" Medusa grabbed some tools and a ladder and immediately began to work on the repairs. The noise was a bit bothersome, but Uriel didn't mind it and adjusted the camera angle to get a full view of Medusa's rear.
"You really are his kid." Nika spat some saliva in a fit of laughter.
"Vlogs are meant for posterity and that is a view deserving to be recorded." Uriel said unaware that historians in the future would wholeheartedly agree with his statement.
"So, gods are real, they can breed with humans and..." Luna was cut short by Uriel.
"I don't appreciate the word 'breed', but yeah."
"There's a hierarchy, some gods are more powerful than others. That tells something." Luna said.
"What?" They all asked in unison after Luna fell silent.
"I don't know, but it's telling." She replied.
"I'm so glad you didn't use it, the crystal dagger. Had you killed your mother..."
"I couldn't do it, even before knowing she was biologically related to me. The dagger's ability is to kill anything, but who knows if it will have an effect on gods, let alone the god of death. Besides, knowing she was Jon's wife, that would have forced me to kill that jerk and that is something I can't do without hurting Medusa."
"Actually, I think I would have been Okay with that. I mean, he started it and it's getting annoying. Whatever you did to him, he had it coming," Medusa's words caused everyone to stare at her and not because of the tight denim pants she was wearing. "what?"
"Does anybody have anything else to contribute to the Vlog?" Contrary to past occasions, Uriel made sure to ask as now they were now sharing their research, though he would have never expected that the one to speak would be Nika.
"I thi8nk we should keep the fact that your mother is a goddess a secret from everyone, including the crew. Also, Did we find any artifact with the ability to fight gods? It's not like I'm scared to be around the god of death, but that was our mission." She said pointedly.
"Right, let's just say she was a civilian that acquired a powerful trait in the wilderness. About the artifacts, we didn't find anything worthwhile. It's just trinkets." Uriel replied in an uncharacteristic disinterest for the golden coins, the historic artifacts and the valuable items they collected from the dungeon.
"We're ready to set off," Medusa said after wiping alloy dust from her hands after polishing the plate she just installed. "where to?"
"Back to the Mapple headquarters it is. We need to proceed with our mission." Uriel said before turning the camera off.
The zeppelin took off with more people than it landed and with a heavier load, though Uriel's burden had become much lighter. Even if he didn't like who their parents turned out to be, that was one mystery less for him to uncover.
He opened the system app without expecting any changes, but he was pleasantly surprised to find out that according to the system he had made some progress in regards to the ancient civilization. His personal quest to set Scoundrel free from the book didn't appear in the system, but with Dana promising to help him with that it was one less thing to worry about.
Now he only needed to focus his attention in the archaeology side of things and find whatever artifacts that could increase their chances of survival against gods, titan level cryptids and the dangers of the wilderness, though with the god of death itself he wasn't too worried about safety.
"Can you stay behind, Nika." Uriel asked the sunkissed huntress.
"Sure, boss." She replied.
"Don't call me boss, you're officially off duty for the following," Uriel checked the time on his phone and turned the camera back on then continued. "however long it takes me to get drunk."
Nika smiled broadly at him before standing behind the counter where she grabbed some beers only to place them back where she found them.
"I think this occasion calls for something special." Saying that and pouring some whisky from Tenesse, the same brand Mister Scofield liked. Uriel didn't like the taste, but was able to drink it with a straight face.
The burning sensation soon gave way to the pleasant intoxication that would drive some people into ruining their lives. Nika thought he wanted to celebrate or maybe forget what happened, but in reality he was conducting an experiment.
When he heard that gods could get drunk only if they wanted to he took it upon himself to find out if the same applied to him.
"First drink, 40° distilled spirits." He said after gulping down his drink.
The trip back to England carried on without inconvenience, except for Nika following on Uriel's old shanties and Jon joining them soon after. Dana, on the other hand, passed the time catching up to the world events while looking out the window wondering if she could ever get accustomed to the new world.
