Chapter 420: Letieche Part 2
As soon as Uriel crossed the membrane that kept the basement separated from the dungeon, Uriel couldn't keep himself from smiling even though he could feel the presence of a strong enemy. The reason for his excitement was that for once, things had gone even better than he planned and he wasn't used to things going his way.
Not only did he find someone who was able to take him to the same POI he was looking for, he also managed to learn about the arrival, got to study archaeological remains and on top of that, he was now a lieutenant in the army.
In a sense, it was only natural that a heavenly rank hunter wouldn't join as a mere corporal, but that didn't make him any less happy.
As usual, though, his happiness was short lived because leading a team also meant he needed to keep them safe and they didn't make it easy for him. They were noisy, unaware of their surroundings and unruly to a fault.
By focusing on his mystical sense Uriel noticed the presence of many different creatures in their surroundings, but most of them hid under the cover of the marshy waters that surrounded them. He couldn't tell what the cryptids were, but he could more or less guess their strength level.
The closest one was only a beast rank and he deemed it safe to leave it to his unit while he focused on the strongest cryptid that inhabited the dungeon. Thankfully for Uriel, there was no maze, no traps and best of all, he already knew the kind of creature that he was about to face.
The whole dungeon was just a hunting ground and it wasn't even that big. The only difficulty about it was the bothersome terrain which gave an unfair advantage to amphibian crytpids while hindering the hunters movement speed.
Before the rest of his unit took notice, Uriel activated Dash and headed straight towards the dungeon guardian with the intention to defeat it as fast as he could to keep his abilities a secret.
With Dash active, Uriel's steps were so light he didn't even break the surface tension of the marsh when treading on top of the floating vegetation creating the illusion that he was able to walk on water and although he could only feel the cryptid's general direction, due to its size it didn't take him long to locate it.
It was lurking at the bottom of the swamp, but with almost five meters long from head to tail it couldn't hide from a heavenly rank hunter's keen senses.
'Sorry, but I'm in a rush.' Uriel thought as he summoned his pocket knife and attacked the cryptid before it could notice his presence. The impact was so heavy it caused a small water explosion, but Uriel was able to notice that the knife slipped over the cryptid's thick scales.
Annoyed more than hurt, the letieche slowly lifted its upper body showing a figure much similar to that of Miss Dragonfang when she activated her trait, but also very different. With dark green scales, a bulky body and a protruding snout, the cryptid looked like a dragon instead of a person.
Thankfuly for Uriel, the cryptid seemed to be just waking up and it moved slowly, though in reality it was only Uriel's altered perception of time what made it seem that way. Needless to say, Uriel didn't linger on such thoughts and continued attacking the beast with the pocket knife in the same spot over and over, but his efforts were for naught as the cryptid's skin remained unscathed.
"You asked for this." Uriel jumped back, dodging a tail strike and summoning his Magnum in the same movement discharging all seven rounds on it before even touching ground. The cryptid emitted a low growl, its unintelligent reptillish eyes widening in pain but, yet again, no harm seemed to come to the nasty creature.
Uriel briefly placed his revolver back inside his trait to regain ammunition and summoned it back again, but now the cryptid was nowhere to be seen and a harrowing sensation coursed the back of his neck. It was his survival instincts telling him he was about to die, but no matter how hard he tried he couldn't spot the danger.
Sweat began forming on his forehead, but due to Dash being active the small drops took forever to form. 'Something's off.' He thought. That much was obvious, but he couldn't put his finger on it. 'How can something so big disappear in the blink of an eye?'
Had it been just an animal, spotting it would have been easy. The problem lied in that cryptids possessed strange abilities that resembled human traits and since it was his first time fighting a letieche, Uriel had no clue about its power.
'Since my knife didn't cause any damage but the bullets did, I can only assume that its scales are incredibly tough. If that was all, I could still defeat it with repetitive attacks, but that woin't happen if I can't even find it... or maybe...' At that moment Uriel realized what he needed to do. It was risky, but it was a strategy that had given him great results in the past.
"What a pitiful scaredy lizard I found... and here I thought it was a worthy opponent." Uriel said as he turned to leave. If there was one thing he knew it was that no one would pass on the chance to attack their enemies from behind.
Then, the huge lizard like creature crept from the waters without even causing ripples on the surface in spite of its high speed and opened its maw as wide as Uriel was tall. A single drop of water falling from the letieche's maw was all the warning Uriel needed and without so much as turning to look at his enemy, Urile pointed the gun behind his back and emptied the chamber.
"Got ya!" He cheered as the letieche fell flat on the water. Due to its thick skin, it was impossible to retrieve the flux orb before the cryptid vanished and he was forced to drag the corpse back to where his unit waited. The corpse was heavy and wading through the swamp carrying it was a slow process and by the time he got close enough to hear the screams, Rusty had already lost his leg.
