Dungeon Nexus: Rise of the Silent Walker

Chapter 5: Chapter 5: The Shadowed Origin

The air inside the Nexus Origin Fragment dungeon was heavy—like an unseen weight pressed down on Kang Jiho's shoulders with every step. The sprawling black city around him stretched into the violet sky, its stone structures exuding an unnatural stillness. There were no enemies. No sounds except for the whispers at the edge of his hearing.

Jiho's instincts screamed at him to move carefully. Something was wrong here.

The first thing Jiho noticed as he advanced was the sheer scale of the city. Wide, empty roads paved with obsidian-like stone led to towering spires etched with glowing violet runes. The whispers grew louder as he walked.

"The Balance… the Walker… the Throne…"

Jiho froze, his gaze darting to the side. The words had been clear this time. He scanned the area, but nothing moved. His system chimed again.

Fragment Disturbance Detected.

Challenge Initiated: Conquer the City of Shadows.

"Of course," Jiho muttered, flexing his fingers as his heart rate picked up. He knew the pattern by now. The system never gave anything for free—there was always a test.

As Jiho ventured deeper, the city seemed to react. A low rumble vibrated beneath his feet, and from the cracks in the stone emerged dark tendrils of shadow. Jiho leapt backward as the tendrils solidified into forms—humanoid shapes, their bodies cloaked in black smoke, eyes glowing like embers.

"Finally," Jiho said, his lips quirking into a small smirk. "You're not much for hospitality."

The shadows lunged forward, faster than Jiho expected. He activated Shadow Veil, slipping into invisibility as the figures swiped at where he had been. Moving silently, Jiho appeared behind the first shadow and clenched his fist.

"Rule Bender: Solidify Shadows."

The creature froze mid-movement as Jiho's skill took hold. Its smoky body became tangible, and Jiho didn't hesitate—his spectral dagger materialized in his hand, a whisper of violet energy crackling along the blade. He drove it into the creature's chest, the shadow exploding into shards of dark mist.

Enemy Defeated. Nexus Energy Absorbed.

The other figures hissed, their glowing eyes locking onto Jiho. More shadows crawled out of the ground, the city itself birthing enemies to stop him. Jiho exhaled, letting the system's notifications fade into the background as he prepared for the fight.

The battle was relentless. Jiho weaved between strikes, his shadow manipulation skill allowing him to bind and tear through his enemies. But as the fight dragged on, the whispers grew louder, sharper—like nails scraping against glass.

"You cannot escape… Walker of Shadows…"

Jiho stumbled mid-step, the words digging into his mind. One of the shadows lunged, its claw grazing his side before Jiho severed it with a swing of his spectral blade. He gritted his teeth, shaking off the disorientation.

"They're trying to distract me," he muttered, glaring at the remaining enemies.

After what felt like hours, Jiho stood alone in the center of the broken battlefield. The shadows had dissipated, leaving nothing but silence. Jiho's chest rose and fell as he caught his breath, his dagger vanishing into mist.

Then the system chimed.

Challenge Completed.

Path to the Nexus Fragment Unlocked.

The ground rumbled again, and at the end of the wide road, a massive gateway emerged—a pair of towering obsidian doors covered in glowing violet runes. Jiho's eyes narrowed. Whatever was beyond those doors was the heart of this dungeon.

Jiho approached the gateway carefully. As he laid a hand on the cold stone, the runes lit up brighter, and the whispers returned—no longer chaotic, but deliberate.

"Enter, Walker. The Throne awaits…"

The doors groaned as they opened, revealing a colossal chamber bathed in a violet glow. At its center stood the throne Jiho had seen in his vision. It was massive, carved from a single piece of black stone, its surface covered in runes that pulsed faintly. The energy here was suffocating, oppressive.

Jiho stepped forward cautiously, his eyes scanning the chamber. He could feel it—the power of the Nexus Fragment radiating from the throne like a heartbeat.

Then he saw it.

At the foot of the throne knelt a figure. It looked human, its form draped in tattered black robes, but its head was bowed as if asleep—or dead. Jiho's instincts screamed at him to stay on guard. He raised his hand, summoning his dagger.

The figure moved.

Slowly, it lifted its head, revealing a face hidden beneath a hood. Its eyes burned violet, twin flames flickering in an empty void. When it spoke, its voice was deep, resonating through the entire chamber.

"You are not worthy to claim the Fragment."

Jiho's grip on his dagger tightened. "And who are you?"

The figure rose to its full height, towering over Jiho. Its body rippled with shadow, its form shifting as if it were struggling to stay solid.

"I am the Guardian. Prove yourself… or perish."

The system chimed one last time.

Guardian of the Nexus Fragment Appears.

Survive and Claim the Throne.

Jiho exhaled slowly, his lips curling into a faint smile despite the danger.

"Well, I didn't come this far to die now."
