Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Baiting the Pact
The factory stood eerily silent, its dilapidated walls soaked in shadows. Jiho's team had set the perfect stage for an ambush, but the tension in the air was palpable. Sanghoon adjusted his rifle behind a stack of barrels, whispering to himself about the insanity of this plan. Haeun, stationed on the rooftop, scanned the surroundings through her scope, the cool wind brushing against her face. Jiho, standing in the middle of the factory floor with the decoy briefcase, appeared calm, but his shadows rippled like a restless tide around his feet.
The Approach
The silence broke when Haeun's voice crackled in Jiho's earpiece.
"Two vehicles approaching. Six men, fully armed. Looks like professionals."
Jiho's lips curled into a faint smirk. "Positions."
Sanghoon tightened his grip on his rifle, his breath steadying. "Hope you've got this figured out, Jiho. These guys look like the real deal."
"They'll regret stepping inside," Jiho replied flatly.
The heavy factory doors creaked open, the sound echoing through the cavernous space. Six figures stepped inside, moving in a V-formation. They were clad in tactical gear, their weapons sleek and modern. The leader, a tall man with a jagged scar down his cheek, glanced around the room, his sharp eyes assessing every corner.
Jiho stepped forward, the faint hum of the Nexus fragments in the briefcase adding to the tension. His shadows twisted at his feet, a subtle but ominous warning.
"You're late," Jiho said, his voice calm yet mocking.
The scarred man smirked. "Kang Jiho, you've been making quite the mess. It ends here. Hand over the fragments, and maybe we'll let you walk away."
Jiho tilted his head, his expression unreadable. "Is that so? I don't trust people who make bad deals."
The scarred man raised his hand, signaling his team. "Your mistake."
The Fight Begins
The first shot rang out, shattering the tension. One of the intruders aimed his rifle at Jiho, but before the bullet could connect, a mass of shadows surged upward, forming a barrier. The projectile disintegrated upon impact, and Jiho's eyes gleamed with cold fury.
"Wrong move."
Jiho's shadows exploded outward like a living storm. One tendril coiled around the nearest enemy, yanking him off his feet and slamming him into the wall with bone-crushing force. The man's weapon clattered to the ground as he slumped, unconscious.
Sanghoon, from his vantage point, opened fire. His shots were precise, aimed at the exposed joints of their armor. One intruder dropped to his knees with a cry of pain as a bullet struck his shoulder, but another quickly retaliated, firing at Sanghoon's position.
"Gotcha!" Sanghoon ducked behind the barrels, narrowly avoiding the return fire. He rolled to the side and returned a volley of shots, forcing the enemy into cover.
From above, Haeun's sniper rifle cracked. The bullet tore through the dim air and struck a man attempting to flank Jiho. The intruder fell to the ground with a thud, clutching his chest as blood pooled beneath him.
The Shadows' Wrath
Meanwhile, Jiho faced off against the scarred leader and two of his men. The leader raised a sleek energy baton, its blade humming with power, and lunged at Jiho.
Jiho sidestepped with fluid grace, his shadows moving in tandem. A tendril lashed out, aiming for the leader's neck, but the man deflected it with the energy baton, sending sparks flying.
"Impressive," the leader sneered. "But shadows can't beat steel."
"Let's test that theory," Jiho replied coldly.
Two shadows speared toward the leader's legs, forcing him to jump back. Jiho closed the distance, his dagger gleaming in his hand. The two clashed, steel meeting shadow, the factory floor trembling under their intensity.
The leader's strikes were brutal and precise, but Jiho's shadows moved like extensions of his body, blocking and countering every blow. One tendril caught the leader's arm, squeezing tightly, but the man activated a pulse from his baton, severing the shadow.
The Turning Point
While Jiho kept the leader occupied, the remaining two intruders rushed toward Sanghoon's position. Sanghoon gritted his teeth, tossing a flashbang over the barrels. The grenade erupted in a blinding flash, disorienting the attackers.
"Now or never," Sanghoon muttered. He emerged from cover and fired, taking out one man with a clean headshot. The other, still disoriented, stumbled into one of Jiho's traps—a wire snare that yanked him upward, leaving him dangling helplessly.
On the rooftop, Haeun spotted movement from the corner of her eye. A seventh figure, hidden until now, was aiming a sniper rifle directly at Jiho.
"Jiho, duck!" she shouted, firing her own shot. Her bullet connected, knocking the hidden sniper off balance, but not before he fired.
The bullet grazed Jiho's shoulder, tearing through his jacket. Jiho barely flinched, his focus unbroken. His shadows surged in a tidal wave, slamming into the scarred leader and pinning him against the wall.
"You talk too much," Jiho said, his dagger pressing against the leader's throat. "Tell your masters I'm not someone they can toy with."
The leader glared, blood dripping from his split lip. "You're making a mistake, Jiho. The Pact doesn't forgive."
Jiho leaned closer, his voice ice-cold. "Neither do I."
With a flick of his wrist, the shadows knocked the leader unconscious.
Aftermath
The factory fell silent once more, save for the faint hum of the Nexus fragments in the decoy briefcase. Jiho surveyed the scene, his team regrouping around him.
"Is that all they've got?" Sanghoon muttered, reloading his rifle.
"This was just a test," Jiho replied, his expression grim. "The real fight is coming. Let's be ready."
Haeun glanced at the unconscious leader and the bodies strewn across the floor. "And what about them?"
"Leave one alive," Jiho said, his shadows receding. "Let him deliver the message."
As they disappeared into the night, the faint flicker of Jiho's shadows was the only trace left of the chaos that had unfolded.
