Chapter 130: Chapter 17: Tags and Red Names
There was one day when Tsunade, while on the run, suddenly noticed something strange in her vision.
She could see "tags."
Above her own head floated the tag: "rbq side character".
Above Jiraiya's was: "Backup guy".
Above Uzumaki Kushina's: "Courting death female cannon fodder".
And Shimura Danzō's had the label: "Mini-boss."
Tsunade was thrilled—she thought her luck had finally turned and that she'd awakened the essential cheat every transmigrator should have!
But how exactly was this cheat supposed to be used?
She studied it for a long time, but couldn't figure it out.
Until she arrived at Tanzaku Street... and met another transmigrator.
Her name was Kaguya Ume. She was the last surviving member of the Kaguya clan—extremely gifted, yet nothing more than a nameless disposable background character in the original plot.
Her only narrative purpose had been to accompany her suicidal clan in Kirigakure all the way to complete annihilation... just another piece of tragic scenery.
And she could see tags too. She had encountered other transmigrators and awakened locals, overheard their gossip and mockery, but Kaguya Ume just sneered at it all with disdain.
"We're all transmigrators—who's really above anyone else?"
She had never told anyone what her first tag said:
"Nameless background extra."
At that time, she didn't even have a name. She was simply one of the "Kaguya clan." Determined to escape her fate, she conducted many experiments—capturing a few high-profile, arrogant transmigrators, torturing them to death. Only then did she finally discover the path to her own promotion—
From faceless extra to "background character A," then to "cannon fodder villain," and now, she'd upgraded to "minor female supporting character."
No one knew how many people she'd killed, or how many destinies and luck traits she had stolen. The rules of this world were downright surreal—every person had a tag indicating their narrative role. Some "awakened" individuals could see these tags, and by seizing or stealing them, their own tags could evolve. This was known as "scene stealing."
If you stole enough scenes, even becoming the protagonist wasn't out of reach!
Tanzaku Street was a gathering place for the awakened. Almost every transmigrator could awaken, while the few awakened locals were always nameless extras.
Upgrading a tag didn't necessarily require killing or looting. Becoming the devoted lackey of a protagonist or key supporting character could also do the trick.
However, while Tsunade's tag was high-level, no one wanted it. Who in their right mind would take on her fate, except maybe some twisted pervert?
Kaguya Ume was willing to share all this information with Tsunade because they likely came from the same world. The proof? They were both hardcore anti-fans.
No helping it—as seasoned anti-fans, their bizarre lingo gave them away instantly. One look and they recognized each other as old acquaintances from the same place.
"Those who stay in Tanzaku Street are mostly awakened who've given up. The ones unwilling to settle for mediocrity are all in Konoha," Tsunade said with a trace of melancholy.
"Get to the point!" the demon growled impatiently.
"Oh, this gun?" Tsunade replied. "There are too many transmigrators—I don't even remember who I snatched it from."
The demon rolled her eyes. "There are really that many transmigrators?"
"I've met quite a few. Not one of them was normal," Tsunade muttered, a look of disgust flashing across her face. Most of the transmigrators were men—and the way they treated her…
Heh.
Changing the subject, she added, "Your tag is a string of garbled characters, but the color is so red it's almost black—a legendary-level red name. Danzō's a harmless bunny compared to you. Now you know why everyone's so terrified of you?"
Only those who killed key story characters would have their name turn red. The color on the demon's tag was simply insane—clearly someone not to be messed with, probably a maniac who killed for fun!
Self-preservation meant staying close to power, flattering the strong, and avoiding their wrath. Among awakened people, this was basic survival instinct. Based on past experience, these low-profile yet incredibly deadly individuals were usually transmigrators—and transmigrators loved being flattered…
"Your red tag was so terrifying—why else do you think I ran straight toward you?" Tsunade said bluntly.
"Of course, if I were unlucky, you might've killed me first. I only dared to take the risk because I saw a bunch of extras hovering around you."
"A mass murderer gets special treatment now?" the demon sneered.
Tsunade reminded her, "Only because they haven't met someone stronger. Otherwise, they'd get justice served real fast."
The demon gave her a cold stare. "You're trying so hard to show off, hoping I'll protect you, but you refuse to submit and become my lackey. Even though you're weak, you still want to interact with me on equal footing, hoping for mutual benefit…"
Caught red-handed, Tsunade nodded without hesitation. Earlier, Kaguya Ume had also tried to recruit her as a minion, but she had flatly refused. She was beautiful, noble-born, and both her talent and strength were top-tier—why should she play second fiddle to anyone?
The demon scoffed. "What a delusion."
Tsunade didn't argue, but her face clearly said not convinced.
"Haven't you considered this?" the demon asked with a smile. "Maybe I didn't come from some peaceful world, and I don't think of you as a fellow countryman?"
Tsunade curled her lip. "Not exactly rare. I've met transmigrators from all sorts of places—'Earth Star,' 'Earth,' 'Red Nation,' 'Flame Nation'—I've seen them all."
"Not just that. Even in different worlds, the plot of Naruto varies slightly. Some tell it from Naruto's point of view as a hot-blooded shounen, others from Sasuke's as a revenge-driven drama, and a few from Sakura's as a romance series. Still, the major events and plotlines are always the same…"
The demon cut her off. "But those transmigrators you've met—they all came from worlds with similar civilizations and history. Have you ever met someone from an entirely different kind of world? Like a world of magic?"
Tsunade froze.
Truthfully, no.
A few fleeting thoughts flashed through her mind, but she couldn't hold on to any of them.
...
Tsunade left Tanzaku Street with the demon. During their earlier conversation, she had already noticed—this woman was looking at her like a piece of pork.
On the road, the demon asked another question: "Awakened people can see tags—but how do unawakened folks or the Five Great Shinobi Villages view all this?"
Tsunade's expression turned solemn. Her tone became layered with meaning.
"It's complicated. Basically… awakened people can't reveal the existence of 'tags' to anyone unawakened—no matter what. It's like… some kind of force is preventing it."
She paused and gave the demon a knowing look—those who know, know.
So many transmigrators bundled together, and mysterious identity tags everywhere—you didn't need genius deduction to realize something shady was going on behind the scenes.
The demon fell silent, lost in thought.
Could this world also have some hidden puppet masters—gods of cats or dogs—pulling the strings?
