Chapter 97: Meeting the Family
One day, when Yang Potian saw Ye Lingling, she seemed unusually distracted, as if she was deep in thought or perhaps worried about something. Yang Potian noticed her expression and couldn't help but ask, "Lingling, is something wrong? You seem a bit off today."
After a long pause, Ye Lingling finally replied, "Potian, my family found out about us, and my grandfather wants to meet you."
Hearing this, Yang Potian looked a bit nervous. "Did your grandfather say anything specific? Does he disapprove of us being together?"
"I'm not sure," she answered. "I only received a message from him, saying he wants to meet you."
"Alright, no problem," Yang Potian agreed. "We'll visit your family during the upcoming break."
After considering it for a moment, Yang Potian decided it was indeed best to meet her grandfather. This would be his first time meeting a partner's family, and as someone who had lived two lives but rarely dated, he felt particularly tense. He wanted everything to go smoothly and feared making any wrong impression.
"Lingling, what is your grandfather's personality like? Should I prepare anything special?"
Seeing his nervousness, Ye Lingling chuckled. "Potian, my grandfather has a good heart. He's actually Heaven Dou's most renowned healing spirit master and is widely regarded as the 'Kind-hearted Doctor' in the spirit master world."
Hearing this, Yang Potian relaxed a bit. "If he's as kind as you say, then I can only hope he'll go easy on me."
"What are you talking about? My grandfather would never give you a hard time," she teased.
In the days leading up to the visit, Yang Potian found himself feeling increasingly on edge. Meeting such a revered elder was a rare occasion, and he wanted to bring a suitable gift. According to Lingling, her grandfather's name was Ye Renxin, the continent's only healing-type Spirit Douluo, with an impressive 81 levels of spirit power. However, his progress had stalled due to both his age and the limitations of his martial spirit.
After some thought, Yang Potian decided to pack a few valuable medicinal herbs in a jade box, hoping they might be of some use to her grandfather.
When the break came, Yang Potian left Heaven Dou Royal Academy with Ye Lingling. Her family's Nine Heart Begonia Clan was located just outside the city, a mere half-hour carriage ride away. To his surprise, their estate was extremely quiet, with only clan guards around and no bustling activity as one might expect from a renowned healer's home.
Sensing his curiosity, Ye Lingling explained, "Our clan specializes in healing, so apart from family members, most of our grounds are dedicated to cultivating medicinal herbs."
"My grandfather lives in a clinic within Heaven Dou City. He only returns to the clan residence for significant family events."
"Doesn't it get inconvenient for him, living in the clinic?" Yang Potian asked.
"Not at all. My grandfather has always made it his life's purpose to help those in need. And the clinic itself is huge—it spans dozens of acres, granted to him directly by the Heaven Dou Empire so he can work in peace."
Yang Potian couldn't help but marvel internally. Heaven Dou City was among the most expensive places to live, yet the empire had granted him such a large plot of land. No doubt, they wanted to ensure that the continent's most esteemed healer remained within their borders.
When the two arrived at her family's estate, they went straight to the main hall. Sitting in the center was a frail-looking old man with snow-white hair and beard. Despite his age, his skin was surprisingly smooth and clear, making it difficult to guess his true age.
Once home, Ye Lingling began the introductions, "Grandfather, this is my boyfriend, Yang Potian."
"Potian, this is my grandfather and the head of our Nine Heart Begonia Clan."
Yang Potian immediately stepped forward to greet him. "It's an honor to meet you, sir."
He presented the jade box, which contained a one-foot-long ginseng root—an exceptionally rare, ten-thousand-year ginseng king.
Ye Renxin did not accept the box but instead remarked, "Yang Potian, you're the grandson of Yang Wudi of the Po Zhi Clan. I saw your grandfather not long ago. His expertise in medicinal refinement surpasses even mine."
Yang Potian responded quickly, "You flatter us, Grandfather Ye. While the Po Zhi Clan does excel at medicinal refinement, we're nowhere near your level in terms of healing and patient care. You're known as the continent's foremost healing spirit master."
Ye Renxin waved his hand. "One's talent in medicine is undeniable; strength in this art can't be faked. My martial spirit is the Nine Heart Begonia, so excelling in healing is expected. What's truly impressive is your clan's proficiency in medicine without even being a healing or plant-based martial spirit."
"Thank you, Grandfather Ye," Yang Potian said humbly. "It's simply the knowledge passed down in our family."
Ye Lingling, a bit exasperated with the conversation's focus, interjected, "Grandfather, Potian, aren't we here because of me? How did the conversation turn to medical techniques?"
She took the jade box from Yang Potian and handed it to her grandfather.
Seeing her gesture, Ye Renxin sighed inwardly, thinking to himself that she was indeed growing up and beginning to distance herself.
After a long pause, Ye Renxin finally spoke, "Yang Potian, are you truly committed to being with my granddaughter?"
"Yes, Grandfather. Lingling and I are deeply in love, and I'm determined to protect and cherish her for life."
"Then are you aware of the curse that haunts our Nine Heart Begonia Clan?"
"Yes, I am," Yang Potian nodded. "My Po Zhi Clan has studied medicinal knowledge for generations, and I know of the existence of two legendary herbs—Lovesick Heartbreak Red and Delicate Velvet Golden Chrysanthemum. If we can find these two herbs, I'm confident we can cure Lingling of her martial spirit's flaws."
Ye Renxin sighed. "I've heard of those two herbs, but they've become nothing more than legends. No one's seen them in countless years, and many doubt if they even exist."
Yang Potian's expression remained determined. "Grandfather Ye, I have information on these herbs' whereabouts, and even if it takes a lifetime, I'll do everything I can to find them for Lingling."
Ye Renxin appeared somewhat moved, saying, "Yang Potian, I am an old man. My only wish is to see my granddaughter live a happy life with someone she can rely on."
"Sir, you can rest assured," Yang Potian replied with conviction. "As long as I am here, I will keep Lingling safe."
After he finished speaking, the three fell silent, with an air of solemnity filling the room. After a while, Ye Renxin broke the silence, dispelling the heavy atmosphere.
