Chapter 196: A Wrong Path, Reunited Again
At the highest point of the Slaughter City, in a dimly lit room.
Yu Tianming lounged lazily on the Death God's throne. The gem-encrusted throne was as large as a bed, but given Yu Tianming's towering frame, it fit him perfectly.
"The Rakshasa God's power mixed into the Shura Divine Power has already been purged. Now, the Slaughter City contains only the inheritance of the Shura God," Yu Tianming slowly opened his eyes, the corners of his mouth curving into a faint smile. "Tang Shan has absorbed ninety percent of the Rakshasa's evil will. There's no one more suited to be the Rakshasa God's successor."
The true Slaughter King, Dugu Yan, leaned against Yu Tianming's side, her gaze soft like water. "Tang Shan and Ma Hongjun absorbed so much of the Rakshasa's malice. Can they still awaken the Death God Domain?"
"They only possess malice now. Without killing intent, they naturally can't awaken the Death God Domain. But since Shura and Rakshasa powers are similar, they might instead awaken a similar type of domain."
Dugu Yan seemed to ponder this. Her cultivation had already risen to a certain level, and she had begun to grasp the mysteries of domains beyond Rank 100.
"If condensing killing intent forms the Death God Domain, and the Death God Domain further evolves into the Shura Domain… then with all that Rakshasa divine power you poured into them, could they condense their own malice and awaken a Rakshasa Domain?"
"Perhaps," Yu Tianming smiled as he gazed into the distance, nodding slightly.
—
Beneath the Slaughter City, on the scorching Hell Road.
As the evil fire within him dispersed, Ma Hongjun suddenly shivered, the red in his eyes gradually fading into clarity.
Being the Evil Fire Phoenix, Ma Hongjun had high fire resistance. Even surrounded by rivers of lava-like blood, he hadn't sweated once. But now, seeing the naked Tang Shan beneath him, sweat instantly soaked his body.
'What have I done?' Covering his eyes with a trembling hand, despair filled his expression. 'I actually betrayed third brother's trust. If he ever learns what happened… he'll kill me for sure.'
Although his innate attributes restrained Tang Shan, Ma Hongjun knew that in terms of actual combat, he stood no chance. And once they left the Slaughter City and regained the ability to use spirit skills, with his mere Soul Ancestor cultivation, how could he possibly stand against a Spirit Emperor?
'I can't stay. If I do, I'll die here for sure.' Ma Hongjun instinctively took several steps back, turning to flee toward the nearby white light barrier. But just a few steps in, he stopped, sighed heavily, turned back, and picked up the unconscious Tang Shan, carrying her toward the end of Hell Road.
In her dream, Tang Shan found herself bound in chains within a scorching hellscape. Ox-headed and horse-faced spirits, along with various terrifying figures, surrounded her and began their judgment.
"Tang Shan betrayed her sect, stole secret techniques, and repaid her school's nurturing with rebellion. She deserves death!"
"She slaughtered innocents to cultivate, draining others' life force. She is unworthy of humanity!"
…
Bound and chained, Tang Shan first felt fear, then her heart filled with boundless rage. When her anger reached its peak, she suddenly broke her chains and screamed at the phantoms around her. "You've all earned death!"
But the hellish phantoms had already vanished without a trace. Only molten stone and endless lava remained around her. Her rage suddenly faltered. Then… an urge to relieve herself struck. Seeing no one around, she squatted among the rocks.
Yet no matter how hard she tried, the more she strained, the more her bowels seemed to retreat upward—
Tang Shan snapped awake with a jolt. Opening her eyes, she saw the sun shining directly overhead. The long-lost warmth bathed her body, and her eyes narrowed slightly in comfort.
"Where are my clothes?" She scanned herself, only to find she was completely naked—except for the Twenty-Four Moonlight Bridges belt Yu Xiaogang had gifted her, still tightly fastened around her waist.
Looking around, she realized she was no longer in the dark, hellish Slaughter City. The sky was bright and blue, and she lay on soft grass beneath forest trees. Birds chirped around her, completing the picture of peace.
'Looks like the fatso succeeded.' Tang Shan stood up and let the breeze blow through her tangled hair. 'At last, I've escaped that hellhole.'
"What the hell is this?" She reached behind her, fingers brushing a sticky, viscous substance. Bringing it to her nose, her expression turned dark, a crimson haze rising in her eyes.
As a master of poisons, even one as "pure" as Tang Shan could instantly identify what this viscous substance was.
"Ma Hongjun… you've earned death!" Though born in ancient times, she wasn't naive. Tales of noblemen and their twisted affairs weren't unfamiliar. Thinking back to her unconscious state and how she escaped the Slaughter City in Ma Hongjun's arms… she already guessed most of what had happened.
Her anger exploded. A crimson aura burst from her body, startling a flock of birds from the forest.
"A Rakshasa Domain? I didn't awaken the Death God Domain, but a Rakshasa Domain instead?" She looked at her palm, where a complex black-red sigil had formed.
'Seems like the Slaughter City wasn't a complete waste of time. Ma Hongjun… I'll make sure you regret everything you did today.'
The Death God and Rakshasa Gods were the only two gods of wicked thoughts in Douluo Continent. Both required passing the Slaughter City and ascending at Rank 100. Their domains were similar:
The Death God Domain condensed killing intent into power—intimidating foes, enhancing strength, and eventually evolving into the Shura Domain, unlocking the path to the Shura God.
The Rakshasa Domain did the same, but with malice. In Tang Shan's case, her dominant negative emotion was wrath. Upon activating this domain, her mind would gradually be consumed by fury. Though it greatly increased her power, it also chipped away at her reason.
And because it was born from direct infusion of the Rakshasa's divine force, her domain was terrifyingly strong—perhaps even stronger than a naturally evolved Rakshasa Domain from a Death God Domain's evolution.
Had Bibi Dong seen the sigil on Tang Shan's palm, even with her deep cultivation in self-control, she would've cried out in shock: How do you have the Rakshasa God's trial mark!?
—
After regaining control over the Rakshasa Domain, Tang Shan retrieved her backup outfit from the Twenty-Four Moonlight Bridges and dressed herself neatly. She then set out for the nearest city to the Slaughter City.
It was a remote town in the northern part of the Heaven Dou Empire. Though close to the Slaughter City, it was still hundreds of li away and protected by stationed imperial troops, maintaining its peace despite the nearby hellscape.
"Yu Xiaogang, you damn plagiarist! Your so-called breakthroughs in martial spirit theory were all stolen from the Spirit Hall archives! You even dared publish it under your own name! You deserve to die!" A thunderous roar shattered the town's tranquility.
'Tang San's teacher? What's he doing in a border town of Heaven Dou? Didn't Zhao Wuji defect to Spirit Hall? Why are they here together?' Tang Shan followed the angry shouting through the crowd.
In the packed street, people were pressed together. Tang Shan could only catch glimpses of heads from where she stood.
"Big brother, what's happening here? Why are two Soul Masters fighting in the street instead of settling it in the Spirit Arena?" Tang Shan asked a bald man beside her in a soft voice.
"Those two? One's a fallen scholar who moved here years ago, the other's a Spirit Hall Soul Saint helping the Empire with local governance. Apparently, they're fighting over a book—The Twelve Competitive Advantages of Martial Spirits."
"Can you tell me more about them?"
"Sure," the bald man looked her up and down. Faced with such a beautiful blue-haired woman, he became uncharacteristically patient. "The scholar came from Heaven Dou City. He's been teaching at the primary academy here for a couple years. No one knows much about him, but people say he has background. No one dares cross him."
"The Soul Saint's from Spirit Hall, here to help the Empire manage its cities. Big guy with a scar across his head—everyone calls him Scarface Bear. His spirit is the Strength Titan Bear. Today he exposed that scholar as none other than Yu Xiaogang, the infamous plagiarist. His theories got countless low-tier Soul Masters killed. Now that the original author caught him… you're in for a good show."
'Spirit Hall? Helping Heaven Dou govern? But weren't they enemies? Why the sudden collaboration?' Tang Shan frowned. She didn't care about Yu Xiaogang's safety—but she had a strong feeling that something big had happened during the two years she'd been in seclusion.
"What do you mean, Spirit Hall helping the Empire? What happened these past two years?"
"You must be from a remote place, girl. Emperor Xue Ye died two years ago. The crown prince Xue Qinghe succeeded the throne. And wow… what a ruler!"
"Right after his coronation, he won support from the Blue Tyrant and Seven Treasure Glazed Tile clans. He subdued Spirit Hall's influence, and brought them under control. Now Heaven Dou is stronger than the Star Luo Empire. Even the four duchies were abolished without war. Even our little border town is being strictly managed now."
As she listened, Tang Shan's expression darkened. 'So Yu Tianming, after marrying Ning Rongrong, has already seized control of the Empire. Why is it that he's always at the top while I suffer every hardship imaginable? Is there no justice left in this world?'
"Big brother, things may not be so simple. Maybe someone's using Xue Qinghe to control the whole empire." Leaving this cryptic comment, she slipped into the crowd.
Using her perfected Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track, Tang Shan glided like a phantom, weaving through the crowd. In moments, she reached Zhao Wuji and Yu Xiaogang.
The argument had turned into an all-out beating. Zhao Wuji, with his bulky Titan Bear physique, had lifted Yu Xiaogang by the collar and was thrashing him like a ragdoll.
"You damned fraud! You stole my martial spirit evolution theory and published it as your own! I, Zhao Wuji, will make you regret ever being born!"
With every slap, blood and teeth flew. The crowd gasped and backed away. Some unlucky bystanders even got hit by flying molars.
"Zhao Wuji! I'm the son of the Blue Tyrant Dragon Clan's patriarch! How dare you treat me like this! Heaven Dou won't let you off!"
"Haha! Son of the Blue Tyrant Dragon Clan? Your spirit is some mutated trash beast, and you pretend to be a Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon? The clan doesn't even acknowledge you!" Zhao Wuji sneered as he raised his fist again.
