Chapter 28: Chapter 28: The Lion King
In the dormitory of East Sea Academy's Class One, the aura emanating from Wu Jin grew colder by the second, filled with deathly stillness and overwhelming resentment. Faint, anguished howls seemed to echo from deep within him.
"Resentful spirits? But why are they so different from ordinary ones?" Saint Spirit Douluo Yali furrowed her brows. As a senior member of the Sea God Pavilion, she had encountered many evil soul masters and seen countless resentful spirits.
Yet the ones emanating from Wu Jin's body were unlike any she had encountered.
Resentful spirits were typically formed from pure hatred and regret. However, the spirits within Wu Jin seemed to contain something more—an indiscernible yet distinct additional force.
"So many resentful spirits within him, and yet he hasn't completely succumbed to corruption? What terrifying willpower," Yali murmured in admiration. The sheer quantity of resentful spirits inside Wu Jin was unprecedented, surpassing even the evil soul master she once encountered who specialized in controlling such entities.
That evil soul master had been a Title Douluo.
Wu Jin, merely a two-ring Soul Grandmaster, had somehow resisted complete corruption despite the overwhelming presence of these spirits.
Though Yali understood that the spirits weren't purely fueled by hatred and that another force was holding them at bay, she couldn't help but respect Wu Jin's resolve. His willpower was almost incomprehensible.
His determination and strength could rival even the most talented individuals within Shrek Academy's inner ranks.
Suddenly, a surge of soul power drew Yali's attention. She turned and stared in astonishment.
"Even with Wu Jin's resentful aura leaking out—a presence so oppressive that even a three-ring Soul Elder would suffer nightmares just by being nearby—this boy is not only meditating but has also broken through?" Yali's eyes flicked between Wu Jin and Xia Yi, her surprise deepening.
Wu Jin's talents, cultivation, and sheer tenacity made him a peerless figure.
But Xia Yi? While his soul power was weaker and his natural talent seemed lesser, he was holding his own in this oppressive atmosphere and even advancing.
Unbeknownst to Yali, Xia Yi wasn't unscathed. He had, indeed, lost control. As his soul power broke through, his consciousness was drawn into an unfamiliar realm.
A vast expanse of snow-capped mountains stretched endlessly before him, their peaks towering into the clouds.
"Roar!" A thunderous roar echoed, and on the highest peak, a colossal white lion appeared. Through the swirling snow, Xia Yi caught sight of the Lion King—a beast so massive that it rested atop four mountain summits, exuding an aura so overwhelming that the very earth and skies trembled.
"An insignificant Lion King thinks it can defy our Abyssal Plane?" From deep within the snowy mountains, a torrent of gray, murky energy erupted, and grotesque abyssal creatures began to emerge.
"Those who trespass upon the Endless Mountains shall perish!" The Lion King bellowed, its mighty roar shaking the heavens and earth. Behind it, a legion of spectral beasts surged forward, joining its powerful attack.
The abyssal creatures were instantly obliterated.
"Impressive, but how much can you endure?" A voice rumbled from within the gray torrent as hundreds of additional streams of abyssal energy emerged.
The Endless Mountains became a battlefield. Abyssal creatures swarmed endlessly, their cries and the sound of combat reverberating through the region.
The Lion King roared, obliterating countless abyssal foes, but the sheer number of abyssal creatures seemed infinite. The beasts of the Endless Mountains began to fall one by one, their bodies dissolving into soul rings that floated ominously in the air—white, yellow, purple, even red.
"My people!" The Lion King's anguished roar pierced the heavens as it descended into a frenzied rampage, its once-pristine white fur soaked in its own blood.
Though it had slain tens of thousands of abyssal creatures, its wounds grew heavier.
"Quickly! Use the corpses and souls of these beasts as a sacrifice to widen the abyssal channel. Only with the arrival of the Abyssal Sovereign can we conquer the Douluo Continent in one fell swoop!" commanded a massive, dragon-like abyssal entity.
Before long, the bodies and souls of the fallen beasts were gathered into a massive vortex at the center of the battlefield.
"Kill the Lion King and use its power to complete the sacrifice!" the abyssal dragon roared. A powerful spiritual force surged from its eyes, causing the Lion King to falter and plummet from the sky.
It crashed among the mountain of corpses, its once-mighty aura flickering weakly.
"Perish!" The abyssal dragon's voice boomed as multiple abyssal overlords attacked in unison, shattering the Lion King's body into a cloud of blood mist.
"Sacrifice it! Welcome the Sovereign!"
The abyssal dragon extended its claws, drawing the Lion King's blood mist into the vortex of souls and bodies.
"King Lion!"
A faint spiritual resonance emerged from the lingering souls of the fallen beasts.
"You are the King of the Endless Mountains. You must not die!"
"King Lion, you have protected us for so many years. Now it is our turn to protect you!"
Countless spiritual voices merged into the Lion King's blood mist. The once-disparate droplets of blood began to coalesce, and an earth-shaking roar echoed across the mountains:
"The Lion King lives, the Endless endures!"
The roar reverberated through the land, even reaching human settlements beyond the mountains.
"Suppress it now!" the abyssal dragon roared. But it was too late. The blood mist, shielded by the essence of countless beasts, surged into the sky and vanished from the Endless Mountains.
"Even without the Sovereign, I will conquer the Douluo Continent!" the abyssal dragon declared, its voice laced with fury.
Under its command, the endless abyssal horde surged toward the human cities below.
