Chapter 1273: Gossiping Together
The atmosphere at the Kansas City Chiefs Training Facility feels somewhat oppressive and dreary.
The funeral ended yesterday, and theoretically they should be back on track, returning to training and matches, as the season's journey is still ongoing.
However, things are not that simple.
They are not robots, Felix is not a label, they can't switch back and forth between 0 and 1 like a computer with a return key that resets everything. Emotionally and physically, they still need some time to adjust and breathe.
Moreover, Kelsey punched Li Wei yesterday, and Li Wei used hellish training to ruthlessly discipline the team inside and out.
The soreness of the body, the fatigue of the mind—these negative effects can't be completely washed away overnight.
So, the atmosphere at the Kansas City Chiefs' morning training today is somewhat peculiar.
Everyone is observing cautiously, Li Wei remains one hundred percent focused on training, and Kelsey still looks disgruntled and angry. The two locker-room leaders are sulking, causing the others to hold their breath lest they become innocent bystanders.
Hill, as usual, is not serious, brazenly cracking jokes and trying to lighten the mood of the team.
In Hill's view, death is not an end but a new beginning. They shouldn't be sad, but celebrate the departure like a party.
They should celebrate the full circle of life, they should send Felix off with a smile, they should bear the weight of Felix's soul with positivity and continue living, extending Felix's life with their actions rather than staying stagnant in sadness and pain.
This is his way of commemorating.
Others may find it a bit boastful and think it lacks respect for Felix, but the opposite is true. Hill's actions stem from respect and admiration; he hopes to cherish every day, refusing to waste life or time, cheering for Felix.
"Coach, it's all the rookie's fault, that devil..." Hill complains randomly.
However, the coach doesn't buy it, "Oh, yesterday. Are you talking about the rookie's training? I was there, remember? You should take a look at the rookie now."
Hill follows the coach's gaze and sees Li Wei sweating profusely, diligently putting his all into training, maintaining the intensity and pace at the highest level.
Hill blinks with a matter-of-fact expression on his face, "He's an alien, we've all agreed on that. We're different from him."
This candid demeanor prompts nods from the other wide receivers, and Hardman now understands why everyone calls Li Wei a devil.
Yet, before the coach could continue to complain, in the corner where the cornerbacks and safeties train, a burst of jeering and teasing erupts without warning.
"Roar, roar roar roar!"
"Rookie, rookie rookie, look here."
"There's a beauty visiting."
"Oh oh oh, oh oh oh."
"Hey, Thalia!"
The calls rise and fall, creating an animated atmosphere.
On the stands, Thalia, with her fishtail braids, wearing a white T-shirt and jeans, covered with a red Kansas Chiefs baseball jacket, the oversized jacket enveloping her petite figure snugly. It's clearly a super-large size, yet this ill-fitting attire on the young girl carries a unique flavor, her youthful aura effortlessly capturing attention, as all eyes quickly converge.
Amidst the jeering, Thalia remains unshy, graciously waving back, raising both hands high.
"Fly high!"
"Fly high!"
One cheer follows another, rallying for the Kansas City Chiefs.
The players begin to laugh in bustling chatter, and the previously dull training ground gains a touch of vibrancy.
Not far away, Damien is intensely staring at Thalia's jacket, as he looks on, it becomes increasingly suspicious, muttering under his breath, "Eh, that jacket... seems like the rookie's."
"I remember the last time I stained his cuff with gravy, I planned to have it dry-cleaned, but he said it was fine..."
His whispered mutter is picked up by those nearby, and one by one, eyes turn towards Thalia, unable to suppress their intrigue, giving rise to a growing stir.
However, the story's protagonist at the eye of the storm remains steadfastly focused, engrossing himself in training.
This sight falls into Kelsey's eyes—
Haha, rookie, who would've thought you'd have a day like this!
Normally, Kelsey would surely tease Li Wei a bit, but now he suddenly remembers he's in a spat with Li Wei, forcing himself to swallow the words, compelling himself to divert his gaze.
Unfortunately, curiosity is hard to resist, and his peripheral vision sneaks a peek, trying to confirm whether the jacket is indeed Li Wei's.
Hill notices.
Hill's personality is straightforward, he speaks directly without beating around the bush, clearly disapproving of Kelsey's and Li Wei's situation.
Hill deliberately steps forward, hitting Kelsey hard with his shoulder.
Caught off guard, Kelsey staggers forward two steps, nearly falling over, finally braking in panic, looking embarrassed, glaring at Hill with a disgruntled expression.
Yet, Hill doesn't care, not only does he remain indifferent, but he also makes a funny face at Kelsey, seemingly dissatisfied with Kelsey's move challenging Li Wei.
Kelsey: ??? Come on, it's obviously Li Wei who's at fault this time, right?
Hill doesn't bother, calling out loudly to Thalia.
"What to do? You came specifically to support the rookie, but that guy pretends not to see, his charm only works on TV, in real life he's so dull, pretty boring. How about this, cheer for us instead, actually we're not bad either."
Hill, still clever, emphasizes "us" instead of "me," afraid that, with a quick turnaround, yesterday's training fiasco might replay.
Roars ensue, a burst of jeering around.
Kelsey is immediately choked by saliva, hastily distancing himself from Hill to show innocence, not wanting to be implicated when Hill dares to tug the tiger's whiskers.
Unexpectedly, Thalia confidently looks at Hill.
"Sorry, you're just not my type."
"Besides, I think you shouldn't use others as an excuse to slack off training, this trick is too childish, easily exposed, losing face completely."
After speaking, Thalia also raises both thumbs, flipping them downwards, making booing sounds.
Ha!
Laughter erupts instantly!
Boo!
Other Kansas Chiefs players follow suit, the booing wave after wave, lively and unstoppable.
Hill clutches his chest with a face full of grief, slowly collapsing to the ground as if melting, a living treasure on the spot.
Even Kelsey can't help but break out laughing.
Despite the sadness and heaviness still hanging overhead, like winter clouds that refuse to disperse; despite the chaotic thoughts filling the mind, unspeakable yet bottled up.
A smile, seems the last thing that should appear at this moment.
But the scene before him, he just couldn't help it, lifting the heavy corners of his mouth slightly.
Hill sneaks a peak, discreetly giving Thalia a thumbs-up—
Way to go!
