Chapter 424: On the Brink of Eruption
Wang Cheng looked viciously at each person mocking him, his fists clenched tightly.
He was just a small-time hoodlum, not a good person; almost no one in the village associated with him.
When disaster struck, he narrowly escaped the flood and survived. Later, when chaos erupted and the world turned topsy-turvy, it brought him an opportunity. Because of his ruthlessness, he drove away batch after batch of people trying to steal their food, making him an influential figure in the village, even more so than the village chief.
Fortunately, he was a filial son, treating his parents and other family members well. His parents always restrained him, so he hadn't lost all his humanity. Otherwise, in such a chaotic and inhumane environment, he would have lost himself long ago, becoming a madman.
At this moment, veins bulged on his face, and his teeth were gritting audibly, clearly on the verge of erupting.
"You all... you all..."
"Liu Cheng, go back. Our village really doesn't have water; staying here is useless," said the village chief, looking at the about-to-explode Liu Cheng.
This man, though bad, wasn't completely devoid of humanity. At least, he treated the people of his own village fairly well. The fact that their Liu family survived from the mountains was largely due to Liu Cheng's efforts. Although the village chief didn't like such a person, he couldn't exactly hate him either.
With the village chief's words, Liu Cheng glanced over, "Village chief, do you really want to let us die..."
"It's not that we don't want to save you; it's that we're unable to save you. Life is hard these days, and who has extra resources to share..."
Looking at the watchful eyes of Wangjia Village residents, the shadow in Wang Cheng's eyes deepened; now there was only one move left.
"Fine, fine... don't regret it later..." As he spoke, Wang Cheng's eyes flickered as he looked at the people behind him, "Let's go, head back." The words were said, but as he turned his head, a cold and fierce light emitted from his eyes.
He waved at the people from Liujiayu, turned sideways as if preparing to leave, but Hua Jin, hidden in the shadows, couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.
"This is bad..." he murmured to himself, then saw Liu Cheng, who was supposed to turn around and leave, twist his ankle and charge toward the village chief. Simultaneously, the dozen or so brothers beside him also sprang into action.
One had to admit that Liu Cheng had a skill; his sudden burst of speed caught everyone off guard. Even though a few guys stood beside the village chief and his two sons were there too, by the time they reacted, they quickly blocked in front of the village chief.
Yet, they were still not as fast as Wang Cheng. Plus, with the assistance of the people behind him, almost at his speed, they entangled Wang Datian and Wang Yichun, creating an opportunity for Wang Cheng to inch into the village chief's vicinity.
In the blink of an eye, before the village chief could react, a machete was already held up to his neck.
"Everyone stop," Wang Cheng yanked the village chief forward a few steps, pressing the machete tightly against his neck.
"Stop, if you don't want your village chief to die, continue..." Wang Cheng's voice suddenly grew louder, a vicious smile on his face. At the same time, both sides of the conflict almost simultaneously stopped, with the Liujiayu people retreating swiftly behind Liu Cheng.
"Dad..."
"Village chief uncle..."
"Village chief..."
This scene made all the men of Wangjia Village furious, and those with impulsive temperaments already surged forward.
"Stop, if you come any closer, I might not be able to hold my knife steady," Wang Cheng tightened his grip on the knife, the blade pressing even closer against the village chief's neck, threatening.
A streak of blood appeared instantly, making Wang Yichun and the men of Wangjia Village red-eyed.
"Liu Cheng..." Wang Yichun and his brothers gritted their teeth, glaring at the person holding their father hostage, wishing they could tear Wang Cheng to pieces.
"Liu Cheng, release our village chief immediately. If anything happens to him, do you believe none of you will walk out of Wangjia Village alive?" Wang Datian said sternly, his face turning livid as he looked at the man ahead, his eyes fixated on the knife in his hand.
"Dare threaten me? I'm not someone you can threaten, ah..." While speaking, Liu Cheng tightened his grip on the knife again.
"Don't..."
"Stop..."
This scene frightened the people of Wangjia Village, causing them to cry out.
"Liu Cheng, let go; holding a useless old man hostage won't do you any good. I'm an old man who should have died long ago. Listen to me, release us quickly, and I promise to let you leave Wangjia Village safely..."
"Shut up..." Liu Cheng roared. Anyway, he must get water today, even if he has to pay the price.
Looking at the tense expressions of Wangjia Village people, Liu Cheng's initially uncertain look became much more determined.
This old man isn't as useless as he says; in his eyes, he's quite useful.
"I want water. Prepare two carts of water, and I'll release the village chief. Otherwise, prepare to collect his body." Liu Cheng's knife tightened again, and blood beads immediately dripped from the blade.
"Don't..."
"Liu Cheng, you deserve to die. If anything happens to my dad, I'll tear you to pieces," Wang Yichun, eyes bloodshot, stared at Liu Cheng like a sharp blade, especially focused on the blood-red streak on the knife.
"Tear me to pieces, that's after I'm dead, not my concern. Right now... I just want water. If you don't want your village chief to have any issues, hurry up and get us water. My patience is limited and I'm prone to violence. If my hand slips, your dad will suffer more; are you willing as a son..."
"Yichun, Datian, don't listen to him..."
"Old man, you better shut up..." Fearing the village chief might say more, Liu Cheng tightened his grip on him, causing the knife to tremble even more.
"No, don't harm my father. Fine, fine, I'll give you the water."
"Yes, yes, don't harm our village chief, but two carts of water is too much; we simply don't have it..." Datian quickly said.
"Do you have room to bargain? It seems your village chief isn't that important to you..."
A clear provocation!
This guy has a brain; although he's holding hostages tightly, Hua Jin's unique perception can see that he's purely after water, with no intention to kill.
Of course, anyone with a brain wouldn't kill in Wangjia Village. With its large population, angering them means they won't make it out alive.
Hostage-taking is just a means to an end – water, the safest and quickest way to win with fewer people.
But unfortunately, both sides stand on different grounds.
As for the question of right or wrong, both sides are simply trying to survive, and Hua Jin can't decide.
Upon hearing this, the village chief grew tense, wanting to speak up, but the knife pressing against his chin tightened, causing his mouth to close involuntarily. His eyes, however, kept signaling his sons and Wang Datian not to give water.
Once this opening tears open, unless the scorching heat subsides soon, Wangjia Village will be in jeopardy as well.
The village chief shook his head with all his strength, causing more blood beads to flow from his neck.
