Chapter 349: Chapter 348: The Promise
Gilbert ultimately still refused Scarlett. "Scarlett, this isn't right…"
"Why not?" Scarlett was a little confused. "Why not?"
"You're still young. You don't really understand what it means to like or not like someone yet." Gilbert gently coaxed Scarlett to lie down, but she was stubborn and insisted on hugging his waist.
"Scarlett, don't be impulsive. This isn't a trivial matter. I hope you can think it through carefully, okay?" Gilbert held Scarlett's head and said softly.
Scarlett was upset. "I'm not being impulsive. I've really thought about this for a long time, Gilbert. It's not fair to me. You don't even see me."
As she spoke, tears began falling from Scarlett's eyes. "I've been on your sets since I was little. You've always been so good to me—like a father, like an older brother.
You're so outstanding so outstanding that your brilliance takes over my entire world. I simply can't see anyone else.
Compared to you, the people my age are completely worthless.
So tell me, how could I possibly like anyone else? I can't do it—I really can't…"
After saying this, Scarlett threw herself into Gilbert's arms, crying and using the sleeve of his shirt to wipe her tears.
Gilbert sighed. He hadn't realized how much space he occupied in Scarlett's heart. Scarlett's parents divorced early, and she had grown up with her mother.
When Gilbert entered Scarlett's life, he unknowingly took on the role of her father.
He had heard in his past life that Scarlett had a father complex, but he never expected that in this life, he would become the object of that complex.
Gilbert's heart softened he could never stand to see a girl cry. He hugged Scarlett and comforted her: "Scarlett, I understand your feelings.
But you're still too young. You're not an adult yet. Surely you don't want me to commit a crime, right?"
Only then did Scarlett look up at Gilbert, whose brows were furrowed, and broke into a smile through her tears. "You don't look very happy about it though."
"No, no," Gilbert quickly denied. "Why wouldn't I be happy? Honestly, when you said you liked me, I even felt a bit smug!"
"Hmph!" Scarlett pouted and asked coyly, "Then do you like me?"
"Of course I do," Gilbert added, "Now that I think about it, I absolutely cannot accept the thought of you falling into another man's arms absolutely not."
Satisfied with the answer she wanted, Scarlett felt content only one thing remained.
She leaned close to Gilbert's ear and whispered something softly, while her small hand reached into Gilbert's pants but he stopped her.
Seeing the confused look in Scarlett's eyes, Gilbert explained, "Not now. Wait until you're an adult, okay? By then, even if you try to run, I won't let you."
"But I want to now…" Scarlett pouted.
"Be a good girl," Gilbert thought for a moment and gave her a light kiss on the lips, offering her a bit of sweetness. "Go to sleep—it's very late. I'll call Susan to come take care of you."
Only then did Scarlett nod and lie properly under the covers. She held out her pinky. "Then let's pinky promise…"
"You're too old to be this childish." Gilbert chuckled.
"No! I want a pinky promise…" Scarlett wiggled her finger insistently.
Gilbert had no choice but to hook his finger with hers. "Then it's a promise between us."
"Yes," Scarlett said seriously. "You mustn't break this promise!"
"If I lie, I'm a puppy…"
"Heeheehee, good!"
Seeing that Scarlett finally fell asleep, Gilbert let out a sigh of relief. Honestly, he hadn't expected Scarlett's dependence on him to be so intense.
Even if it were the legendary Liu Xiahui, famed for resisting temptations, he probably couldn't have done better tonight.
But thinking about it, Scarlett had been by his side since she was little. If she were to fall for another man, Gilbert would feel jealous too.
Maybe it stemmed from a sense of possessiveness he already saw Scarlett as his and would not allow anyone else to touch her.
Fortunately, in North America, especially in high society, the one thing people least needed to suppress was their possessiveness.
Even so, Gilbert still hoped to wait until Scarlett was of age before anything else happened.
He always hated those beasts on the island. But if he became just like them, what right would he have to criticize them?
And so, this matter came to an end for the night. But after that evening, Scarlett shared part of what happened with her good friend Meryl, saying that she had finally become Gilbert's girlfriend.
Meryl immediately asked, "Did you guys do it?"
Scarlett tilted her head and replied, "Not yet. Gilbert said he'll take me once I'm an adult."
"Oh my god!" Meryl's eyes sparkled. "That's perfect! You two are so romantic. You've been with him since you were little, and he's taken care of you so lovingly.
There's nothing more romantic than this. I'm seriously so jealous."
Scarlett beamed with pride. "It's not a big deal! I finally achieved my dream being with Gilbert."
Scarlett had already chosen the room she wanted at the Melon Manor. She had it all planned out she would personally decorate it when the time came.
"Meryl, when Flipped premieres, I want to invite you to the red carpet, okay?" Scarlett offered warmly.
Last night's plan had been orchestrated with Meryl's help. Without her, Scarlett and Gilbert's relationship wouldn't have progressed so smoothly.
Naturally, Scarlett had to take care of and repay her best friend Meryl had given her so much courage and support.
"Of course, of course," Meryl clapped excitedly. "I can't wait!"
Next summer, Scarlett and Meryl would be graduating from high school. Regardless of Scarlett's grades, with Gilbert's help, she would definitely be able to get into a good university.
However, Scarlett wanted to follow in Gilbert's footsteps and attend the University of Southern California.
That would be even easier. After all his years of fame and success, Gilbert had donated significantly to his alma mater. In fact, one of the university's libraries was now named after his mother.
As long as Gilbert wrote a letter of recommendation to the board, Scarlett's admission wouldn't be an issue.
Without a doubt, North America now boasted the best higher education system in the world. But that didn't mean college admissions were free of networking and connections especially since many top universities were private institutions.
That's where influence and relationships mattered greatly. A superstar director like Gilbert was a treasured alumnus of USC, and the school would surely treat him as a flagship figure.
So even if Scarlett's grades weren't perfect, she could still attend USC thanks to Gilbert's connections.
Not to mention, Scarlett's grades weren't bad at all.
Under Gilbert's guidance, even though she wasn't as diligent as the Asian students at school, her grades were still above the passing line.
For Scarlett's seventeenth birthday, Gilbert spared no expense. He asked his old Chinese friend, Old Tian, for help finding artisans to craft a set of traditional Chinese-style jewelry, all packaged in a gift box.
Additionally, a few Chinese tailors measured Scarlett and made custom qipaos and hanfu dresses.
Truthfully, these kinds of items could easily be found in Chinatown, but Gilbert had money and wealthy people love to be particular. He insisted on showcasing these as ancient Chinese craftsmanship to appear more refined.
