Chapter 129: Chapter 129: The Lady’s Scheme (1)

Outside a makeshift military tent set up on a small dirt slope outside the valley's restricted area, General Fletcher paced, absent-mindedly gazing through binoculars at the valley shrouded in ominous clouds, his mind filled with worry.

"Relax. Things can't get any worse now. No matter how scared you are, it won't help!" Not far away, Josh sat comfortably at a field desk, enjoying the tea Ophelia had brewed.

After spending so much time in Europe and America, Josh had gotten used to drinking boiled tea.

He wasn't the type to be too fussy, and boiling tea directly was easier than boiling water and steeping it, especially since boiled tea was stronger and more suitable for people who stayed up late, like when they had traveled non-stop from Hamburg and hadn't slept all night.

Of course, Josh's calmness wasn't because he wasn't worried, but because he knew that worrying wouldn't change anything.

After all, if the Tesla Trooper Armour couldn't solve the problem, he didn't have any better solutions right now.

"I understand, Mr. Kahn, but I just can't relax!" General Fletcher walked over to the desk and sat down with a heavy sigh.

Hearing this, Josh couldn't help but shake his head. Even though he was a general, it was clear that Fletcher didn't have much experience.

But that was normal. Even though the American military seemed to be the strongest army of this era, there weren't many officers or soldiers with real experience.

After all, their time in combat was too short, and they had fought too few tough battles. Most of the time, they relied on strong logistics and firepower to push forward.

So when real trouble came, most couldn't stay as calm as the battle-hardened veterans.

Fletcher was one of them. Originally assigned to train troops at home, he arrived in Europe near the end of the war to guard prisoners of war.

Now they were facing the mythical supernatural forces, so it wasn't surprising that Fletcher reacted the way he did.

Just then, the sound of a car engine came roaring down from the valley.

Josh, Fletcher, and Ophelia immediately stood up and looked toward the valley.

It was the ten vehicles from earlier, returning as normal.

Seeing this, Josh and Ophelia exchanged glances. They were quick.

After all, it had only been two hours since Vito and the others had entered the valley.

So... were the vampires easier to deal with than expected, or had they miscalculated and it wasn't vampires at all?

Or maybe the people in those cars were not the same people who had left?

"Everyone stay alert!" Josh said calmly.

Fortunately, the situation didn't seem to escalate into the worst-case scenario.

The convoy stopped a few hundred yards from the checkpoint, and soon Vito, now dressed in casual clothes, jumped out of the first car with two others and walked toward the checkpoint—this was pre-planned. If the operation went smoothly, Vito would bring only two people to take over the inspection.

On the other side, without needing Josh's signal, Ophelia had already led her team to the checkpoint.

Although Ophelia's mind control skills were average, they were effective on Vito and most of the Hydra task force members. Josh wasn't sure if the vampires in this world had similar powers, so having Ophelia check was a good choice. If there were any signs of mind control, Ophelia would be able to sense it.

Soon, Ophelia confirmed that Vito and the two Hydra team members were fine and signaled to Josh that everything was safe.

Seeing this, Josh and General Fletcher finally relaxed, their nerves easing.

"So were they the ones we were expecting?" General Fletcher was the first to ask when Vito was brought over by Ophelia, before Josh.

But Vito ignored him and looked at Josh. After Josh nodded, he spoke with a bit of excitement, "Yes, boss, just as you predicted, they are vampires."

"Oh? It seems the operation went smoothly? Did you find Hugh Jones?" Seeing his excitement, Josh couldn't help but ask.

But when Vito heard the mention of Hugh Jones, his expression stiffened.

"What happened?" Josh and the others felt a sudden sense of unease.

"Well, boss, things are a little complicated," Vito said, his face looking strange.

"...Then don't keep us in suspense, tell us everything from the beginning!" Josh said impatiently.

"Yes, yes!" Vito chuckled awkwardly and then began to explain their encounter.
