Chapter 636: A Servant
Following a few more half-hearted questions about the current state of the Lower Domain, Nick finally flew off, seemingly satisfied or at least no longer interested. The moment he disappeared from view, Max raised a brow and turned to look at Aria and Elias, his tone dry.
"Really? A servant?" he asked, his gaze shifting between them with obvious irritation.
Elias simply sneered, offering no answer, clearly still holding onto whatever pride he had left. It was Aria who stepped in to clarify, her voice calm but firm.
"This is the safest way to get you into the Middle Domain," she said. "You have to understand, we're sneaking you through, Max. It's nearly impossible for someone from the Lower Domain to get authorized entry into the Middle Domain legitimately, especially without being born into one of the recognized bloodlines or registered under the Four God Nation's approval. The rules of the Guardians are absolute. And only elders had some authority to stand above the rules. Otherwise, anyone attempting to cross the Wall of Divide without approval is either detained or killed on the spot."
She added, "In that situation, the only loophole we can use is the servant clause. Servants are allowed to accompany their masters across domains, and while that rule was made to support talented individuals and maintain elite productivity, it's our best bet for getting you in without raising any alarms."
She sighed in the end. "People from the Lower Domain just doesn't have the right to enter the Middle Domain. It's an absolute rule and nothing could change that."
Max let out a long breath and nodded. He didn't like it, but if this was the price to reach the Middle Domain, then so be it. "Alright," he muttered. "I'll play along."
"Who was that guy?" Max asked again, his tone casual but his eyes sharp, not missing the sudden change in Elias' expression.
Elias' face immediately darkened, his jaw tightening as he answered, "He was Nick, the big brother of Silus."
"I see..." Max muttered, his gaze drifting off for a moment as his mind processed the information. He didn't need to hear anything more.
Just from that short interaction alone—the arrogance in Nick's voice, the condescending sneer when he looked at him—Max could already feel it in his bones.
They were going to be enemies. Maybe not now, but soon enough, their paths would collide, and when they did, it wouldn't be peaceful. Something about the man screamed entitled, dangerous, and worse of all, cunning.
Aria nodded in agreement, her voice low and calm. "That's why I've already asked the two commanders to remain in the Lower Domain for at least another month before they make their way to the Bridge City. As long as they don't appear here or cross paths with Nick or anyone from the Black Tortoise Nation, no one will suspect that Silus is already dead."
Max nodded slowly, appreciating the foresight. It was a smart move. A single misstep now, a single familiar face showing up too soon, and the truth about Silus' death would explode like wildfire.
They needed time—time to settle Max into the Middle Domain, time to blur the trail of what happened back in the Lower Domain, and time to prepare for whatever would come next.
Sometime later, Max, along with Aria and Elias, arrived at a large, high-ceilinged hall that buzzed with a strange energy. Rows of young faces filled the space, each one tense with anticipation, determination, or cold arrogance.
On the opposite side of the hall, rows of middle-aged men and women sat elevated on platforms, expressionless, with flickering holographic screens dancing in front of their eyes as they scanned data flowing before them.
'So this is the authorization place,' Max thought as he took it all in.
Aria had explained everything to him on the way here—this place was called the Authorization Hall.
Every person who moved between the Middle and Lower Domains had to come through here. It was the law of the Guardians, the unbreakable boundary that separated two worlds.
Anyone found in the Middle Domain without prior authorization, whether intentionally or not, would be hunted down by the Guardians—either killed on sight or detained indefinitely. It was a clear, ruthless system. But this hall served another purpose too.
Max now understood that many of the people gathered here weren't just here for inter-domain travel.
This place was also where the geniuses of the Four God Nation—especially those raised in Bridge City—came to have their potential evaluated. If they met the standard and awakened the qualifications of a one-star genius, they could earn the right to be accepted into the main families of the Four God Nation.
Max looked around, scanning the crowd. Every person radiated a confident, overwhelming aura. The distinction between someone from the Lower Domain and the Middle Domain had never been clearer to him. Their power, their pride, their posture—everything screamed superiority.
And in that moment, Max also noticed something else. Among this crowd of shining talents, he was alone. There wasn't a single person besides him who had come here from the Lower Domain, hoping to enter the Middle Domain as a servant.
Now that he'd experienced their presence firsthand, he could clearly recognize who came from below and who didn't—and right now, only he bore the mark of the Lower Domain.
Geniuses of the Bridge City were strictly prohibited from acting as someone's servant in order to gain access to the Middle Domain.
If any of them were found doing so, it would mean immediate expulsion from their families, no matter how talented they were. There were even documented cases of such disgrace in the historical records—lessons etched into the culture, never to be repeated.
The matter of young geniuses testing their talents was a matter that required first attention than the matter of authorisation and so it was conducted first.
Only after that was done that the matter of authorisation for servants were taking place.
Max quietly followed Aria and Elias through the murmuring crowd, his eyes sharp, his mind absorbing everything.
As they walked down the long aisle dividing the hall, heads began to turn.
Whispers followed them. Some recognized Aria and Elias—their status as members of the Black Tortoise Nation's main family gave them a distinct presence. But then their eyes shifted to Max, and confusion crept into their expressions.
A few chuckled, others frowned.
"Who's the white-haired guy?"
"Is he a new recruit?"
"No... he looks like... someone from the Lower Domain."
"A servant?"
The murmurs were low but unmistakable. Max heard them all, but he didn't react whatsoever.
They arrived at a sleek, rune-engraved pedestal in the corner of the hall where a man with silver streaks in his black hair looked up from his holographic screen. His eyes landed on Elias and Aria, and then drifted to Max. The man's gaze lingered longer than usual, but he didn't comment.
"State your business," he said briskly.
"Authorization for inter-domain transfer," Elias responded. "We're registering him," he pointed to Max, "as a personal servant."
The man raised a brow. "From the Lower Domain?"
"Yes," Elias added. "He meets all conditions and has agreed to the terms under the servant clause set by the Four God Nation."
The official nodded, tapping away at his screen. "Place your hand here," he said to Max, gesturing toward the glowing surface of the pedestal.
