Devil's Luck Pirates

Chapter 9: On The Sea

It's been a couple of days since the crew set sail from Gallows Island on their new vessel, the Yogi Pooh. Wind blowing through their hair and being cached by the sails as they continue their journey towards the infamous treasure.

It feels good to be back on the sea after all that happened. Rescuing the son of a shipwright from the hooks of another pirate crew in exchange for a new ship while hanging out with the townsfolk in between. Definitely not what they expected when these four men signed up for the pirate life.

However, going after a buried treasure following the lead of an old map. Now that just screams pirate life.

Since their relatively recent shipwreck on that almost deserted island, William has been thinking about a new name and Jolly Roger for what is left of his new crew.

He was planning on leaving the name as it was before, the Emanon Pirates. Named after their great captain William Emanon. But after some thought, he decided that it was too common for such an uncommon crew as they are. That, and also the constant mockery of their temporary passenger, Pearl.

Speaking of Pearl, the mysterious hooded girl that can magically cook things by blowing at them and has lizard hands. She was the only inhabitant on that deserted island where the crew shipwrecked. Lucky for them. Because if not for her, they will probably be stranded on that island for a long time until the Navy found them and throw them behind bars.

After demonstrating that she is basically dead weight by not being able to serve as their doctor, musician and only being good for heating things, William wasn't very eager to let her tag along for the ride. That, and the fact that she's obviously hiding something from them.

However, after some convincing from Duros, who was very adamant about her coming along, William conceived and let her come aboard. She mostly helps Duros with fishing. Yet, she only seems to be catching boots. Copious amounts of boots.

But even without being able to catch anything edible, Pearl seems happy. She usually tries to act indifferent or outright hostile towards the crew, William and Verona can clearly notice her smile whenever she comes outside or goes fishing with Duros.

The sun rises over the warm waters of the South Blue giving light to the third day of their voyage. They should be getting close to Miller Island. Since they barely have any money and want to avoid as many encounters with the Navy as possible, they plan to dock on the islet just south of the island. And luckily find some supplies there to continue their journey.

-Land ho! – Verona screams from the crow's nest.

After hearing this, the rest of the crew looks ahead. William and Pearl go to the front of the ship trying to see anything, but to no avail.

Verona takes a closer look at the shore with his spyglass. He can vaguely see some shops along the shore, some fishermen boats, and interestingly something resembling a brothel. After scanning from left and right he finally finds the docks of the island where several Navy vessels are docked in there.

-There are some Navy ships docked there also. – Verona says.

-Can you see the small island? – William screams back at him looking at the treasure map.

Verona scans the horizon for a moment trying to find another piece of land, but he can't see anything besides the coast of Miller Island.

-Well, I think we should keep going. But let's keep our distance from those Navy ships. Verona, keep an eye on those Marine ships! – William exclaims taking the helm from Duros.

As he was about to respond, Verona notices one of the ships leaving the dock and start going in a westerly direction.

-Captain! One of the ships left the harbor! – Verona reports while keeping the moving ship on sight.

William panics for a second, but then remembers that his ship isn't waving the black flag, so they shouldn't be marked as pirates by the marines. He also remembers the tolls these marines are charging to cross these waters and the sudden panic comes back again.

-Are they coming for us?! – He asks as a drop of sweat runs through his forehead. He also remembered that their ship doesn't have cannonballs. So they won't be able to even try to put up a fight before sinking into the ocean.

-I don't think so… – Verona responds while watching the ship keep its course paying no attention to the Yogi Pooh.

All of them let out a sigh of relief as they keep on sailing towards the small island that is now on their sight.
