Chapter 7: ch7
Not long after, Alex Johnson came to my side and shook the test tube in his hand. I was secretly pleased. "Why do you want this? Can't you just go get it openly? How can I participate in the election if this is discovered! It will become a stain and let that bastard get the advantage!"
I shook my head. "The director didn't want this to be spread. It's better for those people in the hospital not to gossip about it. It's better not to let them know about this case. And it's been four days, and three people have died. If my guess is correct, these three deaths should have been caused by the same murderer."
"Serial murder case? Isn't this too bad in nature? Are you sure?" Alex frowned.
I still shook my head, indicating that I was unsure, but everything was becoming more and more logical. As long as I figured out the trick, I would know what the murderer wanted to do.
What he brought back was a tube of blood sample from the beggar. I extracted very small amounts of blood samples from the first deceased and the third deceased and compared them with the beggar's blood. If they contain the same components, at least 80% of them are consistent.
As for the third victim, we speculate that the murderer soaked the body parts in hydrogen peroxide solution to conceal the identity of the deceased and possibly to cover up the special aroma.
Three hours have passed so far, and the head and internal organs of the incomplete body have not been found, even the more important pelvis has not been found.
About six hours later, Lucy retrieved the comparison data from the technical department.
It can be concluded that they all contain a special substance in their bodies that can secrete dopamine, so except for Michael Bloom, they all died in the same way, but the way they dealt with the bodies was slightly different.
Inside the meeting room:
I held the report in my hand and slowly expressed my thoughts.
"The dismembered victim, the first victim, and the beggar witness who had an emergency all have a special substance in their bodies that secretes dopamine."
"After comparing the bodies of the deceased, the forensic department found that they had a second commonality: no matter how long they were stored, the bodies gave off a strange fragrance, and the bodies did not decay. Even if the bodies were already severely skeletonized, there was no corpse odor. So now we suspect that the murderer may be the same person, and he will continue to commit crimes."
Seeing the confused expressions of the crowd, Lucy continued to explain the forensic department's inspection report and said:
"Except for the victim Michael Bloom, who had a special identity, the others were probably homeless people or even people without resident status. After splicing the limbs of the corpse, we came to the conclusion that the body parts were definitely from one person. Although the high-concentration hydrogen peroxide solution had damaged the subcutaneous tissue, bones don't lie."
"So the deceased, a male, about 40 years old, between 5'9" and 5'10" tall, must have frequently exposed his hands and feet to the ice and snow before his death, because the swelling of the limbs caused by frostbite is different from the swelling caused by being soaked in liquid."
"Based on the same physical characteristics of the first and third victims, the next victim can be narrowed down to a homeless person or a beggar, and the suspect can be identified among those who often help the vulnerable."
"But Chief Carter, tell me, why might he commit another crime? In such a short period of time, he killed, dissected, and even tortured three people. I'm afraid the fourth one won't appear in the short term. Exposing himself is not the best strategy." After hearing our analysis, Alex raised his own questions.
I don't deny Alex's guess.
The director also agreed with Alex's opinion and tapped the table gently: "But no matter if he shows up or not, we must solve this case within 48 hours. The higher-ups have issued a death order. We must see the whole body of the person, alive or dead."
Alex was responsible for capturing the living, but we were responsible for finding out who was dead. However, we never expected that the fourth "victim" would appear less than ten hours later!
The dead person was the beggar who was the eyewitness. Alex took the doctors, nurses, and others to take statements, and we also stayed in the morgue to observe the deceased.
The deceased's body was covered with scratches, and strange leaves had grown out of the other five orifices except the eyes. The beggar was in great pain before his death, his body was covered in blood, and there were signs of vomiting blood.
Lucy said puzzledly: "Although this is similar to the first victim, I have done an autopsy record of the first victim with you. There is no nutritious substance in the body, including very little blood. But this witness is different. He died suddenly, but you can see that according to the vomiting blood before death, his cause of death is different from that of the first victim."
I nodded and said, "Indeed, judging from the witness's appearance, it is obvious that he still has protein, blood, and other human substances in his body, but this does not mean that the murderer is not the same person. The murderer has a high IQ and knows how to counter-detect. Why would he commit a crime so blatantly when he knew it was a crime?"
My question left Lucy speechless. She smiled and held up two fingers. "There are two possibilities. Either the murderer wants to make this special plant survive and reproduce on a large scale, or he is using living people for experiments. The purpose of the experiment should be to see if this flower can rely on the human body for nutrients."
Lucy took off her mask and packed up her things. "We can only go back to the bureau to dissect the body first. But... what if it is really related to the special flower like corpse arum? Wouldn't it be too bizarre? Too exciting!?"
"Just don't eat while investigating the case next time you're on duty. But no matter what the murderer's motive is, we can only take advantage of it and try to prevent him from killing people again, because I suspect the murderer is right next to us... He was so careless in throwing away the body parts and so bold in poisoning the witness. And the murderer must have known that the witness would die. This is enough to prove that all of this was part of his plan."
Seeing how focused I was, Lucy coughed twice in embarrassment: "Ahem... Chief Carter, the most urgent thing is for us to bring the body of the witness back to the bureau. The longer we delay, the more detrimental it will be to our only clue."
I responded with equal embarrassment: "Oh, yes, inform Alex and let him handle the rest. We will go back to the bureau to do the autopsy investigation."
Lucy walked out with the box in a capable manner, and I spread my palm and placed it on the beggar's forehead.
The scene seemed to be the same as when I was having synaesthesia with Michael Bloom, except that the "protagonist" had changed his position. The beggar was still accepting charity from a man. He was well-mannered and looked clean and tidy.
This man looked familiar, but I couldn't tell where I had seen him. I was suddenly awakened only when Lucy opened the door and called me back.
Lucy looked confused and disgusted, and curled her lips: "What are you doing? Molesting a corpse?!"
I came back to my senses, frowned, and said unhappily, "It seems that foreign ideological education is not suitable for you."
As soon as I got back to the bureau, except for Lucy who kept asking me whether Alex and I were having an affair, Alex notified the serious crime team to hold a meeting, and the forensic department and the technical department all participated.
At the meeting, the director informed everyone very quickly.
"I have asked the technical department to send some of the plants to the research institute. They are more professional in plant species and habits. As for the forensic department, there are only Ryan Carter and Lucy. From now on, the autopsy records will be reported directly to me. There are still 24 hours left. If the case is not solved, everyone in the team will be punished!"
Lucy rubbed her nose at the director from behind and made a face. Alex smiled and said, "You are so brave!"
Lucy couldn't help but frown: "Don't you think it's abnormal that the director would let outsiders know about such an important case? And he is not worried about the deceased at all, but is worried about the plant!? Is he also confused by dopamine?"
I interrupted their bickering. Since I had narrowed down the scope, I also told him part of the clues I had just sensed in the morgue - that delicate, gentle man.
And the most important thing is that he must live not far from Michael Bloom's flower shop!q
