Chapter 1: ch1
"Perhaps death is the best salvation for the living..."
Main characters: Ryan Carter and Alex Johnson.
In my life, there are no bright days, only dark nights. But for me, the nights are enough. No amount of sunshine can describe my life.
An old friend once asked me why I chose this profession and persisted in it for ten years. I shook my head and replied: "It's better to say that this profession chose me rather than I chose it."
Just like life, everything is already predetermined. No matter how many twists and turns you go through, the final result will be the same.
Every day I face more corpses than living people. I never believe there are cases that cannot be solved. Just as others have described me—a forensic doctor who can make the dead speak.
My name is Ryan Carter, a forensic doctor from the Riverside Criminal Police Brigade. Over the past ten years, I have participated in various cases, but the crime scenes are very different from what you see on TV.
"Ryan, there's a case. The director is personally supervising it. The higher-ups have sent people down." The speaker was police captain Alex Johnson, who was in charge of this case and also the colleague I worked with most often.
Seeing that I was preparing things in an orderly manner, Alex quickly described the general situation at the scene to me.
"The deceased was already decomposed and naked. The place where the body was found was not the first crime scene. It was dug out by the side of a small road at the junction of the township. To be exact, it was dragged out by a dog."
When I arrived at the place where the body was found and approached after putting on protective clothing, I felt a slight chill and suddenly heard a dog barking. I looked back and saw an old man over there still pulling his pet dog.
It was a black cichlid, ears erected in alertness, looking in my direction, barking, drool and mucus sticking to its teeth.
I took off my glasses and stared at the black dog for a few seconds. It shrank its head and lay back next to its owner.
Alex looked at me, and I smiled awkwardly and said, "Let's get to work!"
Alex took the on-site investigation information handed over by his subordinates, and while looking at the information, he described the situation of the deceased in detail.
"The deceased is a male, about 28 years old, 5'9" tall, and his identity is still unknown."
I looked at the deceased's hands and found that his face was indeed very young, but the skin from his hands to his arms was like the hands of an old man whose blood had been drained out. It was wrinkled and dry like old tree bark, as if the arms did not belong to this person at all.
"28 years old? I don't think so. It rained yesterday and some of the soil was washed away."
After saying that, I looked at the old man on the side and the black dog he was pulling.
"I guess this old man often comes here to walk his dog, otherwise this black dog wouldn't have discovered it today. Judging from the degree of decay, the body has been dead for about a week. Look at the arm, it looks like the blood has been drained from the whole arm. If they kill someone and dispose of the body, would they drain part of the blood and then throw it away?"
I paused, then continued, "And look at it again. Based on the current appearance of the body, how can you determine the age of the deceased?"
One of the subordinates guessed and replied, "Could it be a cult?"
Alex cursed angrily, "Get lost. I think you're a cult. Go check the nearby surveillance. There's a highway next to this place, and there are many vehicles passing by every day. There are also traffic surveillance videos from a week back and forth. See if there's a possibility that the deceased was dumped."
The subordinate walked away after receiving the order.
Alex seemed to be thinking about something, looked at me, hesitated for a while, and then said: "Ryan, tell me, is this..."
I interrupted him and said, "Stop arguing and let me take a good look at it myself."
Alex saw my serious expression and covered his mouth with his hand. After looking at the body, I stood up and looked around. After thinking for a while, I said, "Come with me to check again at midnight tonight."
"At night? Midnight?"
After returning to the bureau, Alex asked me secretly, "What did you see?"
I shook my head and answered him in a flat tone, "I didn't see it."
But he blew up the temple and said angrily: "What! What are you doing? How creepy in the middle of the night!"
"In some places, the temperature difference between day and night will change. In different environments, the degree of decay and the state of the corpse will be different. So you just need to stand there at night. I don't need you to do anything. I need to collect some soil samples."
"Okay then, just call me and I'll come with you."
After Alex finished speaking, he was called away by a subordinate who came over, and I then devoted myself to studying the corpse.
The body of the deceased was transferred to the autopsy room, and Alex also had the scene strictly protected.
When the intern from the laboratory department came to deliver the information, I had just started to dissect the abdomen of the deceased. However, the cut startled me and I stood there in shock.
The intern was a college graduate who had just graduated. She called me for a long time but when I didn't respond, she came over and saw the dead man in front of her. She screamed in panic, "Ah!"
She was not afraid of the corpse, but the fact that there were no internal organs in the dead person's stomach. I just cut open the skin and I could see that the dead person's stomach was full of yellow dead grass.
I calmed myself down, sighed, and looked at the intern who was frightened. I said angrily, "Why are you shouting? Get out!"
The girl's eyes were filled with tears. I don't know if she was frightened or scolded by me. She said, "I'm sorry, Dr. Carter. I left the information here."
I looked at the corpse with a belly full of straw, and then looked at the withered arm. I first took a photo for record, and then took out the straw from the deceased's body and found that it was just a shell.
What's even more terrifying is that it is impossible to obtain any clues to prove the identity of the deceased, because there are no fingerprints, no internal organs, and even the face is unrecognizable due to decay. Looking at the face and the fingers with missing flesh, there are even signs of bites. It is initially concluded that it was not the dog who bit him, because the bite marks are not large, which also proves that it must have been eaten by a smaller animal such as a mouse.
Just as I was examining his facial features, his eyes suddenly opened on his mutilated face!
I frowned, exhaled a breath, and said slowly: "I will give you justice."
After saying that, I used my hands to close the deceased's eyes. I used a lot of force, otherwise I might not be able to close the deceased's eyes.
After doing all this, the bulging eyeballs and drooping eyelids finally closed slowly...
After dealing with the dead for so many years, I have my own way of doing things. I don't know if it's a kind of ability of mine.
If we use terms like ghosts and gods, it is called spiritualism, while from a scientific perspective, it is called synaesthesia.
I can also feel a kind of aura from the living and the dead. It cannot be seen or touched, but in my opinion, it is real.
When I come into contact with something belonging to the deceased, I can largely deduce and reconstruct the circumstances of the crime, which is more like a profile in psychology.
Now the deceased has no aura at all, and even I didn't see anything at the scene.
This has never happened before.
