Chapter 4: Mason Rivera
The music is loud and my teammates are all talking about whatever. Laughter and music mixed together. I can't stop stealing glances at Xamira, who was now talking to her friend.
"So, Mason" our team's center back, Jabari turns to me. "what's going on with you and that girl? I saw you talking to her. looking all nervous and shit."
I roll my eyes. "I was just talking to her. It's not that big of a deal."
Jabari smirks, raising an eyebrow. "Oh, just talking, huh? Looked like more than just talking from where I was standing. Looked like you were tryna get with her, " he laughs at that "too bad nobody would want to get with your ugly ass."
Before I could respond to Jabari, Tyler nudges me with his elbow. "So, what is the deal, with you and her? You got a thing for dancers now?" He points at her and I notice that she's going outside. Is she leaving? "Got a nice ass too."
I look away from Xamira, and look at him with a look that says The fuck is wrong with you? "Please, never say that about Xamira again."
Tyler rolls his eyes, "If you say so." He gets up from the couch we're sitting at and goes to some girl. Jabari, still looking at the TV speaks up. "I'm so glad I'm not the only one who hates Tyler."
We sit there for a few minutes before our goalie Mark comes over "Personally I've been waiting for someone to fight Tyler, but I found that interesting."
Mark is about to say something else when he gets a call from someone and he walks out into the front since it's quieter there.
"So you have a crush now?" The game went to a commercial so now Jabari chooses to question me.
"Yeah, just a little." I pause for a second "I shouldn't have gotten that angry, I know your somewhat close with Tyler." Jabari and Tyler have known each other since preschool and became friends in the 2nd grade so their close.
"Nah you all good, He can be a little shit at times. He needs to be humbled. You know, her friend is in the front of the house, but she isn't with her."
"Who?"
"Xamira." That makes me look over at the window and see that Xamira's friend, Samatha is indeed outside, getting in her car.
"Weren't they outside together?" I saw Xamira and Samatha walk out earlier.
"Yeah they did. Maybe Xamira decided to stay." Maybe, or maybe she got picked up earlier and I didn't notice. "Just go check, stop overthinking it".
Jabari gives me a shove, making me get up. "Okay, okay I'm going."
When I go outside I instantly see Xamira on the swing set, staring at the fence, that must have been the reason why we didn't see her friend walk out the front door.
"Why doesn't she just go inside and out the front door like a normal person?" Xamira jumps, almost falling off the swing.
"Mason, what are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be hanging out with your teammates." She sounds nervous.
"I got bored of the game they were watching, I didn't know you would be out here." I don't know why I lied to her just now.
"Oh, okay."
It goes silent. I don't know what to talk about with her. Whenever I'm near her my brain just goes blank. I don't know how to break the silence so I just say whatever comes to mind "So where did your friend go?" I go to the swing set and sit on the one next to her.
"She had to go. Sibling needed a ride."
"Oh....why didn't you go with her?"
"Her sister is annoying sometimes." Makes sense.
Looking at her more closely, she looks even more beautiful. It's dark out, but the moon lights her up, her eyes are a dark brown, her hair is black with red and blonde highlights, it suits her perfectly, and it seems like she is half my height.
I don't think I have been obsessed with anyone more than her.
"You gonna stare at me all day or are you going to say something?"
"I like the view....you look beautiful tonight." She turns to look at me.
"Thanks" she's quiet for a bit longer before she speaks up again "I should go." She gets up and starts heading back into the house.
My brain is scrambling thinking of something, so that I can keep talking to her. I decide to run after her "Wait," I stand in front of her, stopping her from opening up the front door. She looks at me with her eyebrow arched up, telling me but without saying it what do you want?
"Do you need a ride? I brought my car, and I haven't drank at all." She looks surprised that I offered to drive her home. She is quiet for a while.
"Okay. Sure, I was planning on taking an Uber. That might not be safe at night though."
She said yes. I walk her to my car and open the door for her.
"So what's your address?"
~'15 minutes later'~
"This is it right?" The car had been silent but I didn't care. All I cared about was being next to her. We just pulled up to the address she gave me, her house is black and white.
"Yeah" she's quiet for a second and turns to look at me "Thanks for driving me home, I hate taking Ubers." She stares at me for a bit longer before she gets out of the car. But as she is about to shut the door she looks at me, "You looked pretty cute tonight." She shuts the door and walks away.
That night when I went to bed my dreams were filled of her face and her saying you looked pretty cute tonight.
