Night falls.
Night City, once shrouded in the quiet of day, comes alive again.
9:30 PM
Civic Center, side entrance of the Biotechnology Office Building in Company Plaza.
Unlike the bustling streets of the red-light district and the vibrant energy of bar strips, the corporate zone where employees toiled during the day now lay eerily silent.
At this moment, an old-fashioned car rolled to a stop near the side entrance.
"You two, get in and out quickly. I'll keep watch here," Mann said from the driver's seat. He checked his watch. "Stay safe, and if anything feels off, contact me immediately."
"Relax, Boss Mann," Rebecca replied, confidently loading her pink Omaha pistols. "With me around, Sasha will be just fine."
Mann lowered his sunglasses, glancing at the two women. "I'm serious—both of you, be careful."
Sasha gave a sweet smile. "Don't worry, Mann. It's just infiltrating a biotech company. We'll be in and out before anyone notices."
Rebecca nodded, and the pair stepped out of the car. Under the cover of darkness, they moved toward the side entrance of the Biotechnology Office Building.
Biotechnology Company
In Night City, the biotech company was a titan among corporations, second only to the likes of Arasaka and Militech.
Specializing in genetic engineering, biopharmaceuticals, and microbiology, their influence extended across medicine, food, and nanotechnology. Their advancements in nanobiocomponents were hailed as the next generation of tech to replace traditional cyberware.
But beneath this prestigious façade lay countless unethical and illegal experiments—a truth only a few dared to uncover.
At the side door, Sasha extended the prosthetic data cable embedded in her wrist. With practiced precision, she began hacking the electronic lock.
Within moments, she disabled the surveillance cameras scattered across the building's interior.
Taking the elevator, the duo effortlessly reached the office floor where their target was located. They had already scouted the layout earlier, and everything was proceeding according to plan.
Sasha located the office containing the data they needed. Slipping inside, she activated the terminal and prepared to copy the files.
Rebecca, meanwhile, leaned back on a nearby desk, looking bored. "Tch. That guy David was totally exaggerating last night. There's no danger here at all!"
Sasha chuckled while typing. "Isn't it better that there's no danger? He probably meant well. We're just being cautious."
Rebecca pouted, popping a piece of gum into her mouth. "Yeah, yeah, but this is so boring. I was hoping for some action."
In truth, Rebecca didn't dislike David—her complaints were more a reflection of her restlessness. She had joined Sasha on this mission precisely to stir things up.
"Alright, just sit tight," Sasha said with a soft laugh. "I'm starting the data transfer now. Just a few more minutes."
The Process Begins
With deft hands, Sasha began her work.
"Signal access established."
"Initiating signal interference. Interference duration: five minutes."
"Alarm system disabled during this window."
"Data source located. Copying initiated…"
Everything was proceeding perfectly.
But then—Sasha stumbled upon something unexpected.
A folder labeled Confidential caught her eye. Its title read: Securicine Model Pain Relief—Confidential Report.
Her heart skipped a beat.
The name "Securicine" triggered a flood of painful memories.
Years ago, Sasha's mother had fallen ill. During treatment, the hospital had prescribed securicine painkillers—mass-produced by the biotech company.
Initially, her mother's condition had stabilized. Recovery seemed certain, provided she took the medication regularly.
But then, inexplicably, her health began to deteriorate.
The decline was rapid and relentless, ending in her untimely death.
Sasha clenched her fists, her mind racing.
Now, staring at the confidential folder, she couldn't resist. Her fingers moved on their own, opening the file.
The Truth Unveiled
The document detailed the side effects of securicine painkillers:
Irreversible Side Effects: Long-term use caused devastating damage to the patient's body.
Short-Term Side Effects: Minimal but concealed from the public.
The report concluded with the company's internal policy:
The severe side effects of securicine painkillers would not be disclosed to the public.
Production would continue without interruption.
Sasha's mind reeled.
Her breathing quickened, and she staggered back a few steps. The words on the screen blurred as her vision swam.
It all made sense now.
Her mother's death wasn't a tragic accident. It was the direct result of the company's greed.
And what was worse—they knew. The executives at biotech knew about the dangers of their product, yet they had chosen profits over lives.
Hot tears welled up in Sasha's eyes. Her fists trembled with rage.
Rebecca noticed the change in her demeanor. "Sasha? Hey, what's wrong?"
But Sasha didn't respond. Her thoughts were consumed by a single truth:
This company killed my mother.
Night City's Reality
This was the harsh reality of Night City—a city where corporations ruled with iron fists, exploiting the weak for profit.
The rich thrived on the suffering of the poor, draining them of their money, their dignity, and, eventually, their lives.
Sasha had always known the system was rigged. But seeing it laid out so blatantly—it was almost too much to bear.
Her mother's death wasn't an isolated incident. It was just one of countless casualties in the endless cycle of corporate greed.
