Chapter 20: Chapter 20: Aegis Takes Shape

[North Oak, M's Mansion, Study – Morning]

Silence filled the room—a muted tension pressing against the sleek black surfaces and towering holo-screens. M sat behind his desk, the afternoon sun slanted across his face, deep-set and calculating. sent a message to Rogue, the queen of fixers, he wanted her. spread the word about Aegis recruitment and the conditions the firm promised.

"Aegis Security Firm is now recruiting. Mercs, ex-nomads, disillusioned corpo muscle. Anyone capable enough, the benefits? Training, pay, implants. Maybe you can vouch for me, sure you can spread the word that I was the one who destroyed the scavs." M said on a call with Rogue.

Across the room, David leaned against a window, watching the tree lined borders of North Oak. He'd matured in recent weeks, but still bore an undercurrent of teenage tension—an edge M had come to value.

M turned and nodded. David straightened, ready—because this was the moment Aegis began.

[City Center – Newly Purchased Building – Two Days Later]

Twelve stories tall, reinforced steel frame, penthouse untouched—it cost a fortune, but M didn't flinch. The ground floor entrance opened into a minimalist lobby with polished concrete, matte-black accents, and reception booths ready to staff. That afternoon, teams of renovators and corporate designers buzzed around.

On the second floor, the firm was taking shape:

A training hall with combat simulators, reinforced mats, and weapon racks.

Ripperdoc stations that are filled with top of the line equipments.

Netrunners' booths, cables strewn across the floor in readiness for hardware installations.

Office suites for departments heads and deputies.

Armory room behind biometric steel gates.

underground garage housing piloting simulators and mechanic toolsets.

By evening, it felt lived-in—a shell ready to be filled with life.

That day, it was decided that the firm would have many departments, the Netrunners department led by Kiwi and deputy Lucyna. Field agents department led by Maine and still undecided deputy, Rapid response team led by David with Rebecca as his deputy, logistic team led by Falco and an undecided deputy, transportations team empty head and deputy positions.

[Two Days Later – Hiring & Interview Day]

Location: Aegis HQ – Ground-Floor Gymnasium

Four hundred mercs lined up, some scarred from Pacifica cage fights, others from corporate contracts. Among them stood out:

Tiny Mike, [ from the gig Concrete Cage Trap ].

Benedict "Ben" McAdams, [ from the gig MIA ].

Lucy, [ from the gig Hippocratic Oath where you can shoot that malestrom guy mid operation ]

Iris Tanner, [ from the gig no fixers ]

And many others.

M watched with hawk-like concentration as his team handled the intake process.

They led applicants into the gym where four testing stations formed a square: Physical Endurance, Ballistics, Stealth/Hacking, and Combat Strategics.

Station 1: Physical Endurance

A row of punching bags, sprint mats, and weights.

Tiny Mike dropped 50 kg plates with perfect form. He sprinted back and forth. No signs of stopping.

Nearby, a corp pawn tried a similar run, but collapsed after the third lap.

Maine watched, arms crossed. He gestured for Tiny Mike.

Maine: "Not bad. Move to the next station."

Station 2: Ballistics & Weapon Retention

Fake hostiles popped out, moving targets. Revolver guns in hand.

McAdams's first shot, center mass. He cycled and reloaded with a single-handed technique. Impressive, but slow.

Maine: "Fancy tricks won't keep you alive, don't do this anymore."

Station 3: Stealth & Hacking Sim.

Station 4: Tactical Combat & Strategy

A short simulated maze with moving targets.

M assigned trainees into small groups, a mix of fighters and netrunners. They had to navigate, coordinate, and neutralize. A merc wanted to show off and nearly killed another participant. When M told him to get out, he became aggressive. M answer was a bullet between the eyes.

[Evening – Intake Hall]

400 applicants. Now 250 remained, selected fighters, netrunners, drivers, mechanics and ripperdocs. M convened the group in a clean-lined auditorium.

M addressed them:

M: "Congratulations. You're on probation. The month ahead is heavy. combat, hacking, field ops, extraction, defence. After that… top-grade cyberware. Gen‑5."

The crowd murmured.

"Field ops start day one, real drills in North Oak and Watson. Expectations are real." Maine said.

Kiwi stepped forward

"Net division hacking corps, surveilling threats, deep diving into the net we start in two days. Training will be done by Nix, one of the best netrunners in Night City, courtesy of Rogue."

M noded and the rest of the team started handing over documents: non-disclosure contracts, fitness requirements, code-of-conduct, all binding to corporate-level severity.

[Later that night]...

[Aegis Armory – Loading Bay]

Racks of weapons arrived from Rickon's crates:

Defender LMGs

DB‑4 powerful shotguns

Precision SPT32 rifles

Overture power revolvers, Unity pistols, Tamayura.

Melee blades in racks

Rickon looked proud in his dusty overalls.

Rickon: "We tested these in the Badlands. They won't let you down."

M checked serial stamps, hardware calibration. All sealed.

M: "No junk. Nothing less than corporate-grade. Good job"

[Underground Garage – Later in the Evening]

Rows after rows of Chevillon Emperor 620s and Thornton Merrimac MSL3 AVs lined up in the garage.

Falco oversaw the inspection.

"Uniform bullet and hacking resistance. No backdoor access." Faloco said in a relaxed tone.

"Good", M said, staring at the fleet of cars.

[Break Room – Post-Dinner]

Most recruits gathered, impressed, whispering ideas.

Ben turned to Tiny Mike.

"These conditions… health insurance, monthly days off… who does that?"

Tiny Mike whispered back"I don't care, with these benefits, I will sell my soul to the devil smiling."

[North Oak – M's Study, Late Night]

The day's frenzy settled into quiet command again.

M joined David for decompression tea. Finalizing the positions

"Netrunners department: head Kiwi, deputy Lucy."

David nodded, running through the names of the department's employees.

"Field team: Maine with Tiny Mike. Rapid response: me and Rebecca. Logistics: Falco. Ripperdocs and mechanics—real hard workers."

He paused for a second

"Rapid response team will be led by you with Rebecca acting as your deputy, logistic team will be led by Falco and Ben will be his deputy, transportations team will be led by Iris Tanner with Liam as her deputy"

"Ripperdocs stations are ready. I'll make an offer to Victor. If he agrees, then he can be the head of our five doctors. For now, let Lucy take charge"

David smiled.

"He'd be perfect. By the way, Health insurance covers accidents, augment failures, and standard burn repairs. And they get two days off a week. Is that all?"

"Yes", M replied

M then looked at David and said in a chilling tone,

"Insurance policy: implants will include a lockdown protocol. If anyone betrays me, I disable them remotely—no trials. Dead men bleed no secrets."

David blinked.

"Corporate-level stuff… no bullshit."

M nodded

"We're not a merc crew of street punks. This is Aegis."
