Chapter 9: The Lost Flower
Still reading the same book, Evan turned one page after another, absorbing more and more information about the empires and dynasties of this continent.
As he continued reading, Evan decided to sit on the floor beside the cabinet. So, he sat down and continued to read, diving deeper into the history of the Dark Star Empire and its imperial family, which was said to have ruled the empire for over nine thousand years.
The current ruler, Emperor Graham El'mor, had allegedly sat on the throne for nearly a thousand years. He had four wives, one of whom was the Empress, Alice El'mor, while the others were his concubines. The Emperor also had nine children—six daughters and three sons.
As for the neighboring empires, the closest one to the Dark Star Empire was the Th'el Empire, located to the northwest, ruled by Emperor Eliot Th'el.
To the northeast lay the Infinite Ocean Empire, led by Emperor James Rah't.
Further north, there was the Fa'rim Dynasty, ruled by Lord Floyd Fa'rim.
And finally, to the far north, stood the Quor Empire, under the rule of Emperor Carl Rodim.
"Huuuummmm… This is too much information…" Evan muttered as he stood up from the floor and put the book away. A frown of contemplation appeared on his face. "What should I do? I don't feel like reading anymore… It's too much to process." His voice carried a hint of exhaustion, his eyes showing boredom. "I haven't explored the village yet… I guess I could do that," he said, and this time, instead of a frown, a smile of excitement appeared on his face at the thought of discovering new things.
With that, he headed towards the door, opened it, and stepped outside his room. As he walked towards the house's exit, he called out loudly, "Mom, I'm going to the village!" Internally, he thought, Better let them know I'm heading out, so it doesn't seem suspicious.
Upon hearing his voice, Sophia responded with a slightly raised voice, "Alright, but don't stay out too long!" Her tone was calm yet carried a hint of concern.
"Okay!" Evan replied before making his way towards the exit. However, just as he was about to leave, a sudden realization struck him. Wait… where's the exit? A bead of sweat trickled down his forehead. Should I ask where the exit is? That might seem suspicious… But on the other hand, I lost my memory, so it wouldn't be that strange to ask… right? As he debated the issue internally, the sound of a door opening caught his attention.
From the doorway emerged David and William, both slightly dirtied, as if they had just finished training. They were talking amongst themselves.
"Dad, you're way too rough!... Everything hurts," David complained, his face twisted in discomfort.
William, however, wore a slight smile upon hearing his son's words. "Without pain, you won't learn anything. You need to understand that," he said in a calm tone.
Hearing this, David said nothing and simply headed to his room, knowing full well what his father meant.
Meanwhile, William turned his attention to Evan. "Heading to the village?" he asked in a relaxed tone, his gaze meeting Evan's while his face maintained its faint smile.
Without hesitation, Evan quickly replied, "Yes, Dad." He nodded to confirm his words.
Hearing this, William said, "Have fun… but don't come back too late."
"I won't," Evan responded swiftly.
"Wait a moment…" William suddenly said.
Evan stopped in his tracks and turned around, now standing near the exit. "What is it?" he asked, though he felt slightly nervous inside.
"Do you need money?" William asked casually, reaching into his clothing and pulling out a pouch.
Evan was momentarily surprised by the question, pleasantly taken aback. Hmm… will I be buying anything? But after a brief thought, he came to a conclusion. Doesn't matter… A little money never hurts.
Having made up his mind, Evan nodded toward William, who then asked, "How much?" while opening his pouch.
"A bit," Evan replied as he approached his father.
Seeing his son's response, William handed him twenty copper Elars.
As Evan took the money into his hands, a sudden thought crossed his mind. Damn… I don't know anything about the currency here… But almost immediately, he smirked. System.
[Yes?] a robotic voice responded.
"What are the currencies on this continent?" Evan asked.
[Answering the host's question, the currency currently used on this continent is the Elar.]
"Yes… but how is it counted?" he asked again, clarifying his inquiry.
[The smallest unit of Elar is 1 Copper Elar. Next is 1 Silver Elar, which is equivalent to 15 Copper Elars. Finally, 1 Gold Elar is equal to 50 Silver Elars.]
"Thanks," Evan quickly responded, feeling grateful.
[It is my pleasure, host,] the system replied in its robotic tone.
Externally, Evan smiled at his father. "Thanks, Dad," he said before rushing toward the door leading outside. As he ran, he waved and called out, "See you later!" before dashing towards the village.
Watching him leave, William simply smiled and returned to sit at the table.
.................
A few minutes later…
"Wow… I didn't expect the village to be this big," Evan murmured as he walked along one of the village's streets, admiring its beauty while exploring.
The street was bustling with people walking around, entering various shops, and browsing several market stalls. As Evan continued down the road, he eventually arrived at a large square packed with people.
"Hmmm… This must be the village market," he guessed, observing the many houses forming a square around it, intersected by several connecting roads. The square was filled with numerous stalls and merchants selling their goods to the moving crowd.
Passing by, Evan saw stalls filled with vegetables, meat, and fish. There was an abundance of merchandise, each labeled with different prices.
He continued walking, glancing at the various shops lining the market—herbal stores, clothing shops, and even places selling utensils. Seeing the prices, Evan wasn't too surprised. After all, this is a village… He noted that a single piece of clothing cost about ten copper Elars.
Further along, he spotted more specialty shops—craftsmen's workshops, paper stores, and shops selling brushes.
After wandering around the market for over thirty minutes, Evan left and followed a small path leading up a gentle hill, from where he could overlook the market and even see his home in the distance.
At the top of the hill, there were a few scattered trees. A peaceful atmosphere surrounded him as a refreshing breeze swept through.
"This place is nice…" he murmured, enjoying the wind. After a moment of relaxation, he sat under one of the trees, lost in thought.
"What should I do?....." he pondered over his future. "When I woke up in this world, I had no goal… until now," he said softly, still deep in thought.
Leaning forward, he rested his head on his hand, considering his path. "Maybe… I'll just enjoy life?" he mused quietly. "After all, I have things to be happy about," he added, recalling the brief but heartwarming interactions with his new family.
"Yes!... I'll enjoy life… but I won't be lazy," he declared with a determined smile. And with those words, he began cultivating, absorbing the Qi from his surroundings. In the silent darkness, Evan cultivated, drawing in sparks of Qi, preparing himself for the journey ahead.
..............
30 minutes later
Evan opened his eyes, a slight smile appearing on his face. "I don't know why, but... I don't feel as mentally exhausted as I did the first time I absorbed qi from the surroundings. System."
[Answering the host's question: With continuous use of this cultivation method, the strain on the mind decreases. This reduction is due to advancing to Level 1 of Energy Gradering,] the system responded slowly.
"Alright… but why do I feel like I absorbed more qi than when I first cultivated in my room?" he asked again, curiosity shining in his eyes and voice.
[The speed and efficiency of cultivation can be influenced by the environment as well as by advancing to higher levels. Simply put, when the host advanced, his cultivation speed increased. However, the efficiency of your cultivation is due to this tree and host advanced.]
"Huh…?" Evan murmured upon hearing the last part, turning his head to look at the tree behind him.
"Why…?" he asked, still staring at the tree, his eyes now shining with excitement as if he'd discovered a treasure.
[Answering: The tree behind the host is a spiritual plant, though of the lowest rank. It generates a stronger type of qi by refining the ordinary qi from the surroundings. Additionally, its presence attracts qi from further away, increasing the overall concentration in the area,] the system explained.
"So the qi I'm absorbing is stronger… does that mean I'll be stronger than others at the same level?" Evan asked, his eyes lighting up with excitement.
[Correct. However, the host will only be slightly stronger than others at the same level. The system advises finding more spiritual plants to absorb an even stronger type of qi.]
"Alright… but how do I find them? Do you have some kind of detector to help with that?" he asked, his excitement undiminished.
[Yes. The system has a function for detecting spiritual plants, but only within a five-meter diameter of the host,] the system replied.
"Ah… that's a bit disappointing… But wait! Does the detection range increase as my cultivation level grows?" he asked with renewed hope.
[Yes.]
"Yes!" Evan exclaimed, pulling his fist toward his chest in triumph.
"By how much per level?" he asked eagerly.
[Approximately 0.62 meters in diameter per level.]
"Hmm… so at the peak of Energy Gradering, the range will be about 10 meters in diameter?" he quickly calculated.
[Correct. Does the host have any more questions?]
"No," Evan answered swiftly. He glanced once more at the tree before resuming his cultivation for another 30 minutes.
...............
30 minutes later
Opening his eyes once more, Evan felt only a slight mental discomfort. "Hmm… what else can I do? I feel like I could keep cultivating, but I don't want to risk losing consciousness… so what else?" he muttered, pondering his options.
"System."
[Yes?]
"How rare are spiritual plants?"
[The rarity of spiritual plants depends on the amount of qi in the environment. The more spiritual plants present, the higher the chances of new ones emerging due to the increased qi concentration.]
"Hmm…" Evan hummed, placing a hand on his chin in thought. "And in an environment like this, how rare are they?"
[In an environment such as this, spiritual plants are extremely rare. Statistically speaking, there is only a 0.001% chance of a new one being born. However, the percentage varies depending on the plant species. The shorter the plant's lifespan, the harder it is for it to transform into a spiritual plant in such conditions.]
"So trees have the highest chance?" he asked, drawing another conclusion.
[Correct.]
"Alright… then let's go search for some. Notify me immediately if you detect one," Evan instructed as he made his way toward a small forest near the hill.
Walking along the path leading into the forest, Evan admired the many beautiful flowers and the occasional tree, but unfortunately, none of them were spiritual plants—a fact he had expected.
He moved slowly, savoring the wind and the natural beauty he hadn't been able to appreciate in his previous life. Step by step, he walked until he reached the forest's entrance, where a well-trodden path stretched ahead.
Evan stepped onto the path, the wind ruffling his hair, birds singing melodious tunes all around. Yet, a thought crossed his mind. "Hmm… if people created this path, I doubt any spiritual plants would be here," he reasoned. Turning his head to the side, he noticed a lesser-used, overgrown trail branching off from the main path.
"This is the way," he murmured, stepping off the beaten path and onto the hidden trail.
He walked and walked, passing various trees and plants, when suddenly—
[Ding!]
[System has detected a lowest-grade spiritual plant,] the mechanical voice announced.
Evan's eyes widened with excitement. "Where?!" he asked immediately.
[A pink flower, of a rather common species,] the system responded.
Upon hearing this, Evan quickly scanned the area, searching for the flower. Spotting it, he immediately crouched down to pluck it—but before he could, a dark blur flashed before his eyes, snatching the flower away.
Evan's eyes widened in shock, utterly unprepared for a thief to steal his find. The culprit? A small bird.
As realization dawned, Evan snapped out of his stupor and shouted, "Hey! That's mine, you little thief!" With frustration in his voice, he took off after the feathered bandit, determined to reclaim what was rightfully his.
