On Day 5, the sun rose, spreading a warm, golden light over the land that was now free of roots. The sunlight stretched across the sky, passing through the trees and giving the rough landscape a soft, peaceful glow. The air was cool and fresh, carrying the scent of damp earth and new growth, hinting at a fresh start. Kai stretched, his muscles sore from the tough work the day before, fighting through tangled tree roots. His body ached, but the tiredness was mixed with a feeling of pride.

He looked over at Varaan, who was already up, carefully checking the soil with the kind of focus usually reserved for solving tough puzzles or avoiding dangerous traps. She was kneeling down with concentration, moving slowly and carefully. Her hands, graceful but strong, gently touched the earth, testing its texture and feeling for signs of new life in the soil. It was a quiet, skillful moment, showing years of experience with both the land and its secrets.

"You know, most people take a moment to wake up before they start acting like a farmer version of Sherlock Holmes." Kai walked over to her and looked at what she was doing.

Varaan didn't look up, still focused on the soil. "Most people don't have a partner who sleeps like a rock and snores loud enough to scare off wolves."

Kai gasped dramatically, putting a hand over his heart like he was hurt. "I do not snore! And if I do, it's charming. Like a lullaby for the forest."

Varaan finally looked up, raising an eyebrow. "If by 'lullaby' you mean 'chainsaw,' then sure."

Kai grinned widely and grabbed the shovel they'd found in their supplies. "Alright, Miss Morning Person, let's get to work. The soil isn't going to turn itself."

With the major obstacles cleared, the land was finally starting to look like something they could use. The once-overgrown patch of land was now a clean slate, and the soil beneath their feet was dark and rich. But even with its potential, it was still clumpy and uneven. Kai shoved the shovel into the ground with a satisfying thunk, the sound of metal hitting earth echoing around them. He broke up the clumps, his muscles working in rhythm with the motion. "You know," he said, leaning on the shovel to catch his breath, "I never thought I'd say this, but dirt is kind of fascinating. Look at this stuff. It's like… the chocolate cake of the earth."

Varaan, who was using her hands to break up smaller clumps, glanced at him. "Chocolate cake?"

"Yeah," Kai said, waving his free hand toward the soil, "rich, dark, full of potential. And if you're not careful, it'll get everywhere and ruin your day."

Varaan shook her head, a small smile tugging at her lips as she went back to her work. "You're ridiculous."

"And yet, you keep me around," Kai said, sticking out his tongue playfully. "Which says more about you than it does about me."

They both kept working, the silence between them easy and comfortable, filled with the sounds of shovels digging and dirt shifting. Varaan suggested making raised beds to improve drainage. Kai paused, leaning on his shovel and looking at her with interest. "Raised beds, huh? Fancy. Are we turning this place into a farm or a botanical garden?"

"Both," Varaan replied firmly, her tone practical. "If we're going to do this, we're going to do it right. No half-measures."

Kai raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Spoken like someone who's done this before. You're not secretly a master gardener, are you? Should I start calling you 'Farmer Varaan'?"

Varaan hesitated for a moment, her hands stilling in the soil. She glanced up, her eyes distant for a second before returning to the task. "Not a gardener," she said quietly. "But I grew up on a farm. A long time ago."

Kai blinked, surprised by the rare glimpse into her past. Varaan rarely talked about her history, and he knew better than to press her on it. But this felt like an opening. He set his shovel down and sat on the ground, patting the spot next to him. "Really?"

Varaan sighed, brushing dirt off her hands before sitting beside him. The sun cast a soft, warm glow over the land as she began speaking. "It's not a big deal. My family had a small farm. We grew vegetables, raised a few animals. It was… simple. But good."

Kai nodded, his usual sarcasm gone, replaced with genuine curiosity. "What happened?"

Varaan's gaze shifted toward the horizon, her face hard to read. For a moment, Kai worried he had pushed too far. But then she spoke again, her voice softer. "War happened. The Crimson Guild came through and burned everything. My family… didn't make it. I was young. I ran. Ended up joining a mercenary group to survive. Been on the move ever since."

Kai sat quietly, taking in her words. Crimson Guild... he remembered how they had beaten his father in front of his eyes. After a few long moments of silence, he smiled softly, trying to lighten the mood. "Well, look at you. From farm girl to badass warrior. That's quite the glow-up."

Varaan snorted, shaking her head. "Glow-up?"

"Yeah," Kai said, bumping his shoulder lightly against hers. "You went from planting potatoes to planting knives in people's backs. That's growth."

Varaan chuckled, a rare sound that made Kai's grin grow wider. "You're impossible."

"And yet, you keep me around," Kai teased, his tone playful. "Which, again, says more about you than it does about me."

Varaan's mood lightened, but there was a new understanding between them. As they worked, shaping the soil into neat rows, Kai couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. What had once been a wild, overgrown patch of land was now a blank canvas, ready to be transformed into something productive, something that could help them survive. It wasn't just a piece of earth—they were building a future.

As they worked, they started to uncover worms and other small creatures, a clear sign that the land was healthy and fertile. Kai picked up a particularly wriggly worm, grinning. "Look at this guy! He's like the king of the dirt. All hail His Majesty, Sir Wigglesworth."

Varaan rolled her eyes, though the faint smile on her face showed she was amused. "You're ridiculous."

"And yet, you're smiling," Kai said, gently placing the worm back into the soil. "Admit it, you started enjoying my company."

"I tolerate you," Varaan corrected, though her tone was fond. "There's a difference."

As the sun began to set, the raised beds were finished, and the soil had been aerated, ready for planting. Kai stood back, hands on his hips, surveying their work with a sense of pride. "Not bad for a couple of amateurs, huh? I mean, sure, it's not exactly a five-star resort for plants, but it'll do."

Varaan nodded, her face showing quiet satisfaction. She looked at the neatly arranged soil, and for the first time in a while, her shoulders relaxed. "It's a good start. Tomorrow, we'll plant the seeds."

Kai groaned, dramatically flopping onto the ground. "More work? Ugh!!"

He swung the shovel with a bit too much enthusiasm, sending a clump of dirt flying straight at Varaan. She dodged it with the grace of a seasoned warrior, but the look she gave him could've melted steel.

"Oops," Kai said, not sounding sorry at all. "My bad."

Varaan wiped a speck of dirt off her cheek, her eyes narrowing as she fixed her gaze on him. "You did that on purpose."

"Did not," Kai replied, though his grin suggested otherwise. "It was an accident. A happy little accident."

Varaan picked up a clump of dirt and threw it at him with impressive aim. Kai yelped, ducking just in time. "Hey! That's assault!"

"No," Varaan said, her voice dangerously calm. "That's payback."

Kai raised his hands in surrender, chuckling. "Alright, alright. Truce?"

Varaan thought for a moment, then nodded. "Truce. But if you 'accidentally' hit me with dirt again, I'm burying you in one of these raised beds."

Kai grinned. "Noted."

The stars began to appear, and the two of them sat in comfortable silence, the weight of the day's work settling over them. Kai glanced at Varaan, his expression softening as he spoke. "Hey, Varaan?"

"Yeah?"

"Thanks for telling me about your past. I know it's not easy for you to talk about."

Varaan was quiet for a moment, then spoke softly. "Whenever I tell this to others, they laugh it off. They say everyone lost something to the Crimson Guild, so it's best to keep my mouth shut and move on with the truth." She paused again, looking at the ground, before meeting his eyes. "Thanks for not making fun of me."

Kai smiled, his voice light but sincere. "Oh, don't worry. I'll make fun of you for plenty of other things. But not that."

Varaan shook her head, but there was no malice in it—only a quiet understanding between them. "You're impossible."

"And yet, you keep me around," Kai laughed again, his tone teasing yet earnest.

Varaan didn't respond, and she didn't need to. The bond between them was stronger than words, built through shared struggles and quiet moments like this. As they sat there, watching the stars, Kai couldn't help but feel a sense of hope. The land was ready, the seeds were waiting, and for the first time in a long time, the future felt… bright.

Even if it did involve a lot of dirt.
