Chapter 2: Chapter 2
Kai's breath came in ragged. The world around him blurred, his vision wavering as he tried to make sense of what had just happened.
His partner, someone he trusted—had shot him. Not once, but three times.
Each bullet had torn through his flesh, leaving him writhing in pain. And yet, Leo had let him escape.
"Why?"
The question pounded in Kai's head.
At that moment, Kai's mind raced back to the conversation he had just had with his partner before.
The man's words echoed in his head, each one a stab to his already battered soul.
He leaned against the cold, damp wall of the alley, his legs trembling under his weight.
He was losing too much blood. He knew it. His strength was fading, and he felt the icy fingers of death creeping closer with each passing second.
But what gnawed at him even more than the physical pain was the betrayal. The sheer audacity of it.
"I tried to warn you, but you didn't listen; you were so foolish, Kai."
Leo said, his voice dripping with venom.
"You never saw it coming, did you? We've been playing you for a fool all this time. And now, look at you. Bleeding out in some filthy alley. It's all your fault, Kai. If you had just listened… if you hadn't been so stubborn… maybe you wouldn't be dying right now."
At that moment, Kai started cursing Leo, spitting out threats through the pain, his voice hoarse and broken.
'I'll kill you.'
He had vowed, his eyes burning with fury.
'You bastard, I'll hunt you down, regardless of where you run. I'll make you pay for this.'
Kai's jaw tightened in pain. He knew he couldn't do anything because he was already running out of breath; his eyes were open, but he couldn't see with them, and he couldn't feel any pain anymore.
"So this is how it ends."
Leo then smirked. He walked closer to Kai's lifeless body; he bent down and closed his eyes.
"You caused it; if you had listened to me earlier, you would still be alive; what a shame I would get another partner now."
He shakes his head.
'Don't close my eyes; you fucking bastard!.'
Kai kept on repeating his words, over and over, his words becoming a mantra of anger and despair. But his partner seems not to hear him. Instead, he laughed in a cold and heartless manner as he walked away, leaving Kai to die alone in the darkness.
Kai's vision blurred again, and he felt himself sinking, his knees giving out as he slid down the wall. His eyes fluttered shut, the world growing dim around him.
'This is it. This is how it's going to end. Been betrayed and broken, left to die by someone I had once trusted with my life.'
But just as the darkness began to swallow him whole, a voice calm and authoritative echoed in his mind.
[Host has passed Nemesis system requirements.]
Kai's eyes snapped open, and though his body remained motionless, barely clinging to life, his mind was still working. What was that? Was he hallucinating? The voice continued, unfazed by his confusion.
[Host has become the vessel of the goddess, Nemesis.]
Nemesis? The name struck a chord within Kai, resonating with a deep-seated anger and desire for justice. He had heard of the goddess Nemesis, the goddess of retribution, the one who dealt justice to those who deserved it.
Why was this appearing to him?
Kai had no idea what was going on. Just then, another message came up.
[The goddess has been warned not to interfere in mankind's world, but the goddess refused that warning and was locked away in prison]
[However, she performed a spell to find a perfect match for her powers.]
Kai's heart pounded in his chest, Was this real? Could it be? The voice went on, relentless.
[The goddess has arranged countless missions and tasks for the vessels. Your life will not be yours again if you accept the power of the goddess.]
Missions? Tasks?
Kai was confused, yet the messages and the voice just kept coming in without tending to his confused thoughts.
[Should you choose to become the vessel of Nemesis, you would not die here! And you would exact revenge on those who put you in this state. Do you accept it? Yes or No.]
Kai's eyes burst open in shock.
So if he accepts this shit! he wouldn't die here!
Kai didn't know what was going on, but there was no need to think about this.
He didn't care about the missions or the tasks. All he wanted was to live, to get back at those who had done this to him. He could see their faces in his mind—his partner, the man who had escaped, the ones who had betrayed him before. He needed to survive. He needed to make them pay and bring justice to the family that has been hurt and heartbroken.
"Yes."
He whispered, his voice barely audible but filled with anger.
"I accept."
A sudden burst of blue energy sprung out from his body, the message and the voice became audible.
[The host has made the right choice.]
[A thousand years of searching have been completed.]
[A perfect host has finally been found.]
At that moment, a surge of energy coursed through Kai's body, starting from his chest and radiating outward. It was like nothing he had ever felt before—a raw, untamed power that filled every fiber of his being.
He could feel his wounds closing, the pain subsiding, as the power of the goddess Nemesis flowed into him.
[Transferring Nemesis' power to host.]
[0%… 1%… 100%.]
As the process completed, Kai felt an overwhelming sense of clarity. His mind was sharp, his body strong.
The fatigue and weakness that had gripped him moments before were gone, replaced by a burning desire for justice.
[Host has become a vessel of Nemesis.]
The voice was different now, infused with an authority that demanded respect.
Kai could feel the presence of the goddess within him, guiding him and empowering him.
[Peace without justice is tyranny].
The words resonated deeply within Kai, aligning perfectly with the fury that had been boiling inside him since the moment he was betrayed.
[Become the man who sets justice back where it belongs.]
[Let your name scream fear to those who are enemies of peace.]
[Let your actions make those who oppose you quiver.]
[Let your appearance be the final judgment of evil.]
Kai stood up, his body revitalized, and the bloodstains on his clothes were the only remaining evidence of his near-death experience.
His expression was cold, his eyes hard and unyielding. There would be no mercy, no hesitation to punish the wicked.
He couldn't believe this was real, that he had been brought back to full breathing, by merely saying yes, by merely accepting this strange power.
The power of Nemesis.
[Failure of any mission results in death. Justice delayed is justice denied.]
