Chapter 9: Oar's Inn
On their way to the inn, Gildarts and Aldo remained silent for a few minutes.
Gildarts suddenly spoke up, "So…your the village heads nephew huh?".
"I wasn't really trying to hide it or anything…"
Aldo smiled back sheepishly.
"I know kid." Gildarts grins back.
"And you didn't tell me that you were a member of Fairy Tail either! So that makes it even." Aldo squibs back.
"…I guess that does make us even" Gildarts says in mirth.
"….."
"Pfft-Hahahaha!!"
The two of them turn to each other before bursting out in laughter and then continue on their way.
-Some time later-
The two of them reached a five-story building. Before them was a huge board in front of the inn.
[OAR's INN]
Walking into the inn, they see the place bustling with activity.
"Seems like this place is rather popular…" remarked Gildarts.
"It is one of the best establishments in the town!"
"A lot of people come here due to it's great food and comfortable accommodations, however, not everyone can enter."
"It is a rather high end place and is therefore kind of pricey!"
Aldo excitedly introduces the place to Gildarts, telling him about all the interesting stories regarding the inn.
"What an interesting place." Gildarts remarks.
Suddenly his attention was drawn towards a corner where loud shouting was heard
*THUD!*
"BITCH!! Do you…*Hic*… know who I am!"
"You tell her BOSS!!"
"HAHAHA—"
Gildarts observed a group of three men, looking sleazy and drunk, making a racket and harassing a waitress.
"Sir-! Please let go of my hand!!" The waitress pleaded.
"How dare you refuse the boss's offer!" The other two men jeered as the man, the supposed leader among them, tried to make the women sit on his lap.
"Stop!! Let go-!" The waitress said with tears in her eyes.
On seeing this, Gildarts face hardened in anger.
He stared walking over and just as he was about to make a move, a pan came flying over and hit the sleazy looking hooligan in the face.
*Bang!*
The cooking utensil smashed into the sleazebag's face and knocked him out cold, along with two of his teeth.
"Thud! Clank!"
The room went dead silent as the pan clattered to the floor. The waitress, still trembling, looked around in shock, unable to believe what just happened. The two remaining hooligans stared at their unconscious leader, then at each other, confused and in disbelief.
"BOSS!! x2" His two followers cried out in alarm.
"Who… who threw that?!" one of them shouted, his voice strained with anger with a hint of fear.
From the kitchen, a large, burly man with a thick beard and muscular arms stepped forward. He wiped his hands on a dry cloth, his face set in a stern expression.
This was Oars, the innkeeper, a man with a menacing presence and build.
"I did," Oars growled, his deep voice rumbling through the inn. "And I'm not in the mood to deal with you lot's nonsense tonight."
The two henchmen visibly shrank under his gaze, their bravado completely gone.
Gildarts, who had been ready to intervene, paused and watched with curiosity as Oars approached the unconscious leader.
"You've got a lot of guts causing trouble in my inn," Oar said, looming over the fallen thug. "And you've also got no brains."
Oars annoyance was palpable through his voice.
The two lackeys flinched as Oar cracked his knuckles.
"Gulp!"x2, The two henchmen swallowed in nervousness at the sight of Oars getting ready to pummel them.
"Y-You...Do you know w-who we are?" One of the thug pulled up some confidence before questioning in a nervous manner.
"Nope... and I don't care!" Oars said with a sneer.
*Zing*
A white magic circle appeared between his clenched hands, pulsing with magic power.
The two thugs face turn pale with horror.
"A W-wizard... !!" One of them squeaked in horror, the other thug fell down trembling in fear.
Oars glanced at them in contempt and then snorted, "You lot better get out of here before I decide to take you out myself."
"EEEPP!!"x2
The hooligans didn't need to be told twice. They scrambled to their feet, dragging their unconscious leader with them, and bolted for the door. The other patrons in the inn started murmuring, the tension in the room dissipating.
As the door slammed shut behind them, Oars turned back to glance at Gildarts.
"Thanks for not getting involved. I prefer to handle my own problems."
Gildarts grinned awkwardly while scratching his chin.
"Your welcome... I guess? You've got a good aim."
Oars chuckled, his stern demeanor softening. "Got it from years of tossing out idiots like them."
Aldo, who had been quietly watching the show, stepped forward. "Uh, uncle Oars? Actually, we were hoping to get a room for the night" he said.
"Huh, Lil Aldo? Your back!?"
"Ah... Yes, I'm back safe and sound. Sorry for worrying everyone!" Aldo said a little sheepisly.
"It's good that your alright!" Oars sighed in relief.
"Also, it was uncle Doma who sent us here."
"Hoh? Doma eh?" He raised his eye at that.
Oars nodded. "I've got rooms. You can pick whichever one you fancy."
Gildarts gave Oars a nod of appreciation.
"Thank you. This place looks amazing, I'm definitely going to enjoy it here!"
As they followed Oars to the counter to finalize their accommodations, the inn gradually returned to its lively atmosphere, the earlier incident already being forgotten and the event fading into the background.
After a brief exchange at the counter, Oars handed over the keys to their rooms, gruffly pointing out the stairs leading to the upper floors. "Your rooms are on the third floor, just down the hall. Anything else you need, just let me know."
Gildarts took the keys with a nod. "Thanks." he said, giving Aldo a quick glance. "Let's go."
They climbed the stairs, the creaking of the old wood under their feet adding to the inn's rustic charm. When they reached the third floor, Gildarts paused, looking down the hall.
It was well-kept, with sturdy doors lining either side and soft light spilling from the magical lamps on the walls.
"Cozy place," Gildarts remarked as they found their rooms.
"Yeah," Aldo agreed. "But, uh, I think I'll turn in early."
"Sure, Goodnight Aldo."
"Goodnight, Mister Gildarts! I'll see you tomorrow." With a final wave, Aldo leaves the Oars inn to return home.
...
Entering the room, Gildarts takes a look around.
The room was simple but comfortable. A large bed with a thick quilt, a sturdy wooden chair by the window, and a small table with a jug of water and a lamp.
"Hrmm..."
Gildarts set his pack down by the bed and stretched, feeling the weight of the day's journey settle into his muscles.
He then moved to the window, pulling back the curtain to look out at the quiet village below. The moon was high in the sky, casting a silvery glow over the village. Gildarts leaned on the windowsill, lost in thought.
"Tomorrow… I'll go around the village and explore a bit."
"Plus, I'm about to run out of whatever money I had found on me. I need to earn some cash." he mused to himself.
"Haaa...", Gildarts sighed, running a hand through his hair.
With a plan in mind, Gildarts felt the tension leave his mind and his body relax.
He turned back to the bed, pulling off his trusty cloak and worn out boots before lying down. The mattress was firm, and the quilt warm. He didn't realize just how tired he was until his head hit the pillow.
*Yawn!*
As he closed his eyes, Gildarts let out a deep yawn. "Whatever will come tomorrow, are the problems for the future me to take care of." he thought. "But for now… I need some well deserved sleep!"
Within moments, the tired wizard drifted off to dreamland, resting his mind and body to face the events of the next day.
The world settled into a quite calm, the night taking over.
