Chapter 35: The Hidden City.
As they journeyed on, the trio found themselves standing at the foot of a majestic mountain. But this was no ordinary mountain - its peaks were shrouded in a thick, gray mist, and its slopes were barren and unforgiving.
Lyra's eyes narrowed. "This place feels... off."
Ming's voice was laced with agreement. "I know what you mean. It's like the mountain is watching us."
Ling's eyes scanned the horizon. "I don't like it. Let's find a way around."
But Lyra was undeterred. "No, I think we should explore. There might be something hidden here."
As they climbed higher, the mist grew thicker, until they could barely see a few feet in front of them.
Suddenly, Ling stumbled upon a hidden entrance beneath an ancient tree. The tree's trunk was twisted and gnarled, its branches reaching up towards the sky like skeletal fingers.
Ming's eyes widened. "Whoa, look at that."
Lyra's smile was mischievous. "I think we're meant to go inside."
As they stepped through the entrance, they found themselves in a narrow, winding tunnel. The air was musty and damp, and the walls were lined with ancient carvings.
But before they could explore further, a figure emerged from the shadows. He was a young warrior, with black hair and piercing green eyes.
Without warning, he launched a strike at the trio, his movements swift and deadly.
Ming's eyes narrowed, and he raised a hand, summoning his mental powers to block the attack.
The warrior's eyes widened in surprise, but he quickly recovered, launching a flurry of strikes that sent the trio stumbling back.
Lyra's laughter was melodious. "You're pretty good, but we're not going down without a fight."
Ling's eyes narrowed. "Yeah, bring it on."
The battle raged on, with the trio fighting for their lives against the young warrior.
But just as it seemed like the tide was turning in their favor, an elderly man appeared out of nowhere, his long white hair flowing behind him like a river of snow.
"Enough!" he thundered, his voice echoing off the walls.
The warrior froze, his eyes flashing with anger, but the elderly man's gaze was stern.
"You will not harm these travelers," he said. "They have come seeking the legendary Throne City."
Ming's eyes widened. "The Throne City? Is that what this place is?"
The elderly man chuckled. "Ah, young one, you have no idea what wonders lie ahead."
Lyra's eyes sparkled. "So, where is the Throne City?"
The elderly man smiled. "Why, it's right here. This mountain is the gateway to the city."
Ling's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"
The elderly man gestured to the ancient tree. "The tree is the key. Watch closely."
As he began to chant, the air around them began to shimmer, and a portal emerged from the tree's trunk.
The warrior's eyes narrowed. "You shouldn't trust these strangers," he said to the elderly man.
Ming's eyes flashed with anger. "Who are you calling a stranger?"
The warrior's smile was cold. "You're not worthy of entering the Throne City. Leave now, while you still can."
With that, he turned and flew off, leaving Ming's teeth grinding with anger.
But the elderly man just chuckled. "Don't mind him, young one. He's just a bit... enthusiastic."
Lyra's eyes sparkled. "So, shall we enter the Throne City?"
The elderly man smiled. "Ah, yes. The wonders of the city await you."
And with that, the trio stepped through the portal, ready to face whatever lay ahead.
As they emerged from the portal, the trio found themselves standing at the edge of a magnificent city. The buildings were made of a glittering white stone, and the streets were paved with gold.
Ling's eyes widened in awe. "Whoa, this place is incredible."
Ming's voice was laced with wonder. "I've never seen anything like it."
Lyra's smile was radiant. "Welcome to the Throne City."
As they explored the city, they stumbled upon a group of inhabitants, dressed in traditional clothing. The inhabitants were friendly and welcoming, but there was something strange about them.
Ming's eyes narrowed. "What's going on here? These people seem... off."
Ling's voice was laced with agreement. "Yeah, it's like they're hiding something."
Lyra's smile was enigmatic. "I think I know what's going on. Let me handle this."
As Lyra approached the inhabitants, she began to speak in a language that the trio couldn't understand. The inhabitants' eyes lit up, and they began to nod in agreement.
Ming's eyes narrowed. "What's going on, Lyra?"
Lyra's smile was mischievous. "I'm just negotiating a little deal. Don't worry about it."
But before Lyra could explain further, a figure emerged from the shadows. He was a tall, imposing man with piercing blue eyes.
"Ah, Lyra," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "I see you're still up to your old tricks."
Lyra's smile was icy. "Xiao. I should have known you'd be here."
Xiao's eyes narrowed. "And I should have known you'd bring your little friends along."
Ming's eyes flashed with anger. "Who is this guy?"
Ling's voice was laced with warning. "I don't like this, Lyra."
Lyra's smile was reassuring. "Don't worry, guys. I've got this under control."
But as Xiao began to circle around them, his eyes gleaming with malice, the trio realized that they were in grave danger.
Meanwhile, the young warrior who had attacked them earlier was watching from the shadows, his eyes fixed intently on Lyra.
"I'll get you next time," he muttered to himself, his voice dripping with venom.
And as the trio faced off against Xiao, they had no idea that they were about to face their greatest challenge yet...
