Chronicles of the True Wizard

Book 1: Chapter 13

Ding You have slain a [E - Common] Goblin Shaman (Lvl 20)

Ding You have gained a level in [E - Common] Caster

The System conjured them… they're dungeon monsters… That was disgusting, physically, emotionally and morally.

Thankfully, the looting the Shaman's corpse caused Felix to notice something, distracting him and answering a question that had bothered him for a while. Shortly after placing the Shaman's corpse in his inventory, Felix opened it to take stock. He noticed a bunch of items he didn't place in there himself. After pondering it for a few seconds, he realized where the items had come from.

So that's what happens to someone's inventory when they die? Their inventory is added to mine if I stow their corpse. I wonder what happens if I just leave their corpse there, would it get expelled around them after a while? Oh shit I should collect the corpses of the burnt warriors then,

Combat Dungeon C

Round 2 will begin in 30 minutes.

Start now?

Yes

No

No.

The slight delay is getting me a little worried, but it's probably so that it can determine if you are in a safe spot. If you suicidally jump into a fire, you probably shouldn't win the round.

Felix quickly left the building and collected the charred Goblin Warrior corpses, then went through his inventory.

Seems like they didn't have much on them, most of their swords and shields burned away. The shaman carried enough rations for each of them for five days and fourteen monkey corpses. He also had Mana Bolt and Gust spell books. I wonder why they don't have much on them. Probably just dungeon shenanigans.

Man I really have to claim soon, hopefully I don't end up overshooting it and getting 20 in this dungeon run. Also I have 21 free points, guess I put them into intelligence. I think that increases my damage, I hope that's how it works. If not, mana is great anyways. All free points into intelligence.

Felix inspected his character sheet for the first time in a while.

Name: Felix Kade FREE 0

Level: 8 STR 20

Class: [E - Common] Caster (Lvl 17) DEX 51

Race: [F - Common] Human AGI 25

Profession: ??? PER 54

Health: 246/280 VIT 28

Mana: 828/960 INT 96

Energy: 214/260 END 26

No more stats from working out this time. Maybe I should adjust the intensity and tailor it to specific stats I want to level. I'm not sure that the individual points I'm working towards are going to matter much, but I do like seeing progression. Also those mana batteries seemed huge when I got them, now they seem kind of small. Damn, maybe I should look at modifying spells again, I probably have the mana to support it now.

My stats would be crazy if I could also be leveling a profession. I really need to find one.

Felix walked back to the outpost and meditated outside until the next round started.

After almost a half hour of meditating Felix heard a loud shrill shrieking sound coming from the trees. His eyes widened and he scrambled to get into the outpost. He made it inside and barred the door with a log then quickly climbed to the fifth floor as fast as he could. The smoke was luckily almost entirely dissipated by now. Felix prepared an amped up Fire Bolt as he ran. He made it to the fifth floor and as he'd feared one of this round's enemies had already made it inside.

[E - Common] Saber-tooth Monkey (Lvl 18)

He drew the one spear and shield he had looted from the previous round. The pair was small on him, but it was workable. Felix really did not want to have to get close to the Monkey. It was currently screaming with its arms stretched out threateningly and claws bared. Its claws were at least two inches long and it's fangs four. Felix released his prepared spell and backed up.

The Monkey recoiled when the small ball of fire washed over its face. It clawed and patted at it's head as it jumped up and down, Felix didn't waste the opportunity, he quickly lunged forwards and stabbed towards the Monkey's throat. The monkey was too fast though and it quickly jumped aside. It snarled again and lunged for Felix's throat with its fangs. Felix panicked and hid behind the shield, which turned out to be the correct move as it also tried to slash at his chest with it's claws. Felix dropped the buckler as the monkey held on and was fairly heavy. As the Monkey fell to the ground, Felix stabbed again with his spear. The Monkey easily jumped away.

Then Felix pulled the ace out of his sleeve and pumped mana into the Fire Bolt spell form he had been preparing. He had it positioned right behind the Monkey's head so it didn't see it in time to dodge. Luckily that was enough to kill the creature.

Felix quickly stowed the corpse with a touch then closed the trapdoor in the ceiling and barred it as best he could. Then, he ran over to an arrow slit in time to see Monkeys swinging around in the trees around the outpost. Every few swings they would hurl stones at the outpost.

At least it's not dung.

Their aim was not particularly good but they made up for that in raw speed. They hurled rocks and swung around so fast it was hard to track. Unfortunately that meant Felix's best shot was to use the lower damage Mana Bolt due to it's superior speed. Felix began preparing a Mana Bolt spell form, and decided to make it twice as big in every dimension, as he hid behind the wall. It would cost eight times more mana, but Felix should be able to handle it for a little while, plus it would make every hit count for more and hopefully speed up the outcome of the fight. As soon as it was ready he peered out the slit and tracked one of the monkeys as it swung. He aimed his shot ahead of the monkey and fired. A loud screech confirmed he had hit the monkey, though Felix wasn't sure where on the monkey he had hit it.

Felix continued to hide behind the wall before peeking out and trying to hit the monkeys as they swung. Luckily, their swinging on an arch was predictable. He estimated that he had managed to hit about 60% of the time. He wasn't entirely sure how often he was hitting them as they were all constantly screeching, not just when he hit them. His perception was high enough to mostly keep track of them but often they swung through leaves and behind trees.

Felix started to run low on mana so he hid and pulled out batteries, though he didn't risk meditating as his senses would be too cut off. He tried pulling mana from two at once but replenishing his mana pool didn't happen any faster. He needed to go through almost four full batteries to replenish his mana at this point.

As he was pulling from the batteries two of the monkeys landed on the roof and clawed at the trap door. Felix kept his eye on the trap door as he continued to try and pick off the monkeys who still swung. Luckily, the outpost was designed to deal with the monkeys so they couldn't just swing on to the side of the building and rip open the arrow slits.

Thankfully I didn't take down the building.

Suddenly one of the logs of the trap door was ripped off and Felix watched as a monkey try to stuff his head in the gap. Felix jumped at the opportunity, literally, and stabbed a spear into it's eye as deep as he could.

The rest of the trap door was quickly ripped away and the corpse of the monkey who stuck his head in prematurely fell to the floor. The other one swung down into the room hanging from the opening with its feet and jumped at Felix. As fast as he could Felix pulled out his great sword, because he wanted as much reach as possible to keep it away, and stabbed at the monkey. The monkey managed to claw the sword to the side saving it's own life but earning itself a cut on its hand.

As soon as it landed just in front of Felix, it jumped at him again. Felix released a supersize Mana Bolt right into it's face as it was in the air and held the great sword blade in front of his chest to protect himself. It seems like this was one he had hit before as it died as soon as his spell hit. It's body continued on and landed right on top of Felix, knocking him over.

Felix quickly stowed the corpse and scrambled over to the corner so the remaining monkeys couldn't see him through the trap door. He prepared a supersize Mana Bolt and aimed the spell form right at the edge of the hole ready to go. After a dozen seconds or so Felix heard a monkey land on the roof and got ready, but even prepared, his reaction speed was too slow. The monkey swung through the opening at top speed. Luckily it swung in at random so it ended up swinging to the side of the room.

Felix pulled out the Goblin Warrior's buckler and started preparing the same spell again. He had stowed the great sword, which was much too unwieldy for him to use, especially in one hand, and pulled out a dagger instead. The Monkey quickly jumped off the wall and lunged at Felix who curled up as much of himself as he could behind his shield.

The monkey smacked against the shield and tried to claw over it managing to land a swipe of it's claw on Felix's cheek but earning itself a dagger to the eye in return. It quickly jumped back off the shield and Felix finished it with a point blank supersize Mana Bolt through it's head.

Felix quickly stowed the corpse but kept the shield equipped because he was pretty sure there was at least one more. He quickly peeked out the window but didn't see any movement so he put his back to the wall and trained his eyes on the hole in the roof. He began preparing a Fire Blast that was three times bigger in all dimensions with an even thicker outer line. He was trying a different strategy this time, even though Mana Bolt traveled much faster, Felix's reaction time wasn't quite good enough to catch them from range this close up.

Felix was ready for the monkey to swing from above, so he was surprised when he heard scratching below him right before a monkey swung down from the roof through the hole at the same time as one leapt from the floor below. Felix held out his shield even it was too small to defend against them both, it did make him feel safer. He immediately cast his prepared spell as he didn't trust his reaction speed and luckily, both of them jumped at him and into the spell.

Ding You have slain 7 [E - Common] Saber-Tooth Monkey (Lvl 18)

Ding You have gained 2 levels in [E - Common] Caster

Thank god I only gained two levels, that means if I only gain one on the next round, I won't miss claiming in this level bracket. Fingers crossed.

The two monkeys were completely charred, even more than the warriors he had pushed into the bonfire earlier. He looted all of the corpses, sat down and meditated with batteries to begin regenerating mana.

Combat Dungeon C

Round 3 will begin in 30 minutes.

No.

Seems like the kill notifications only pop up when I'm safe. I guess it could be in the middle of combat if I'm not overly in danger, like with the boars. I guess that makes sense, it doesn't want to distract you. I could see that getting confusing though if you aren't sure if someone is dead then you don't get a kill notification and you don't know if they died or you are still in combat with someone.

After half an hour Felix sat at half health and full mana, thanks to the mana batteries, with most of his energy.

He waited around for another half an hour expecting something to happen when he finally decided to just explore. He left the outpost and carefully paid attention to his surroundings as he walked further into the forest. Just a few hundred meters away from the outpost Felix came across a large opening in the side of a rock. Felix had almost walked by it because the cave was completely overgrown with moss and fallen leaves making it difficult to spot.

Why would there be a random cave in the dungeon generated forest? I don't really want to just walk in there, I won't be able to see anything and I don't really have a great source of light. Speaking of, how do I not have a simple light spell by now? I can hold a Fire Bolt, but then I can't cast anything. Guess I have to try to smoke whatever is in there out.

Felix quickly ran around collecting as many leaves and branches as he could in his inventory. Then he pulled out the Gust spell book and quickly memorized the spell form, making sure to file it in his mental library. Then he set all the leaves and branches down in a big pile in the opening of the cave. Before lighting the fire he constructed the spell form for Gust and filled it with mana. It took him a few tries to get the channeling right with how much mana he had to push into the spell form and making sure his consistency was right. Once he was at least capable of casting the spell, he lit the pile and channeled Gust into the cave.

Over twenty minutes later, Felix almost gave up when he heard the sound of a loud roar and thunderous steps echoing from deep inside the cave. He quickly ran away from the cave and hid behind a tree. The sound of steps stopped echoing and Felix heard another roar. He quickly peeked around the tree. . . . . .
