Chronicles of the Regressor

Chapter 22: Chronicles of the Regressor - Chapter 22

Chapter 22 - The Scarred Blade Returns

The dawn broke, not with the gentle hues of a new day, but with the grim, blood-orange and steel-grey light of war. Before the gleaming white walls of Eldoria's capital, the vast, sprawling army of Vorlag stretched for miles, a dark tide advancing. Catapults, siege towers, and thousands upon thousands of soldiers, their dark banners fluttering ominously in the biting wind, formed an imposing, terrifying sight. At the forefront, a towering figure, his Aura a swirling vortex of malevolence, stood like a dark god – Varkos.

Kaelen, concealed within the outer perimeter of the Eldorian defenses, felt a cold, burning rage ignite within him, hotter than any inferno. Borin. His family. The desecrated villages. Varkos would pay. He looked at the Eldorian defenses, the Aura Knights arrayed on the walls, their auras shining brightly, a beacon of defiance. He saw his father, General Valerius, standing tall, his presence commanding, a grim resolve etched on his face. He saw Gareth, his A-rank Aura burning fiercely, ready to lead the charge, his grief for Kaelen and Borin a palpable force. He saw his sister Lyra, her C-rank Aura shimmering as she prepared her mana-nullification field, her brow furrowed with concentration. And he saw Princess Aurelia, standing beside the King, her face grim, but resolute, her eyes scanning the approaching enemy.

They thought he was dead. They thought Borin was dead. They were fighting a war of survival, burdened by their losses, their spirits dimmed by the sacrifices already made.

Kaelen slipped through the Vorlag lines, a phantom in the night, his tainted Aura allowing him to blend with their own dark magic, to become one with the shadows. He moved towards the capital's walls, towards the heart of the impending battle, a silent, unseen force. He reached the outer perimeter of the Eldorian defenses, a silent, unseen presence. He looked at the vast Vorlag army, at Varkos, and then at the faces of his family and friends, ready to fight to the last breath.

The war was here. The final battle for Eldoria was about to begin. And Kaelen, the regressor, the Scarred Blade, had returned. He was a shadow, a weapon, a force they didn't know they had, ready to turn the tide. The true test of his ability to change destiny was now, and he would not fail.

The first volley of Vorlag siege engines launched, massive boulders and flaming projectiles arcing through the sky, slamming into Eldoria's outer walls with deafening roars. The ground trembled. The battle had begun.

"Archers! Volley fire!" General Valerius roared, his voice cutting through the din. "Mages! Prepare defensive wards!"

A shimmering shield of pure Aura erupted around the capital walls, deflecting the initial barrage, but the sheer force of Vorlag's assault was immense. Siege towers began to roll forward, their massive forms looming.

Kaelen, positioned near a less-guarded section of the outer wall, felt the familiar surge of adrenaline. He couldn't reveal himself immediately. He needed to strike where he could cause the most impact, where his unique abilities would be most effective. He needed to be the unseen blade.

He slipped over the wall, a shadow among shadows, moving through the chaos of the battlefield below. His tainted Aura hummed, allowing him to perceive the subtle flow of Vorlag's dark magic, to anticipate their movements. He moved towards the siege engines, his first target.

He reached a massive catapult, its crew preparing another fiery projectile. Kaelen moved like a ghost, his Aura-infused blade a blur. He disabled the crew with precise, non-lethal strikes, then plunged his blade into the catapult's mechanism, twisting, shattering the gears. The catapult groaned, then collapsed, useless. He moved to the next, then the next, a silent whirlwind of destruction.

Meanwhile, on the walls, Eldoria's defenders fought valiantly. Gareth, leading a contingent of Aura Knights, met the first wave of Vorlag shock troops attempting to scale the walls, his A-rank Aura a vibrant green, cutting through their ranks with ruthless efficiency.

"Hold the line, brothers!" Gareth roared, his sword a blur. "For Eldoria! For Kaelen! For Borin!"

Lyra, Kaelen's sister, worked tirelessly with the Grand Archmage, coordinating the mana-nullification field. As Vorlag mages began to chant, preparing their devastating magic circles, Lyra's field shimmered to life, disrupting their spells, causing them to fizzle harmlessly.

"Their magic is failing!" an Eldorian mage cried, a surge of hope in his voice.

"Excellent work, Lyra!" the Grand Archmage exclaimed, a rare smile on his face. "Kaelen's intel was spot on!"

But even with the disrupted magic, Vorlag's numbers were overwhelming. The siege towers reached the walls, and heavily armored Vorlag soldiers began to pour onto the ramparts. The battle became a brutal, close-quarters melee.

Kaelen continued his work below, destroying siege engines, severing supply lines, creating chaos behind the Vorlag front lines. He was a force multiplier, a silent, devastating presence. He felt the constant drain of his tainted Aura, but he pushed through it, driven by his purpose.

Suddenly, a chillingly familiar Aura flared from the main Vorlag command tent. Varkos. He was moving.

Kaelen felt a cold dread. Varkos was adapting. He was leaving the main assault to his lieutenants and moving to exploit a weakness, or perhaps to target a key individual. Kaelen knew Varkos's tactics. He would go for the King, or Princess Aurelia, or perhaps even his own sister, Lyra, knowing her role in disrupting his magic.

Kaelen immediately changed course, abandoning the siege engines. He moved towards the Eldorian command center, a tower near the main gate where the King and Princess Aurelia were overseeing the battle. He had to warn them. He had to intercept Varkos.

He reached the base of the command tower, slipping past the outer guards. The dark taint in his Aura screamed at him, amplifying the malevolent presence of Varkos, who was already inside.

Kaelen burst into the command chamber. King Theron II, General Valerius, and Princess Aurelia stood around a holographic map, their faces grim. Varkos was there, too, having bypassed the inner guards, his dark blade already raised, aimed at the King.

"Your Majesty! Behind you!" Kaelen roared, his voice raw, his Aura flaring, the dark taint making it visible for the first time, a shimmering, dark-edged light.

Everyone froze. The King, General Valerius, Princess Aurelia – their eyes widened in shock, not just at Varkos's presence, but at Kaelen's. He was alive. And he was… different.

Varkos, startled by Kaelen's sudden appearance, snarled. "You! How are you alive, Valerius?! And that Aura… what have you done to yourself?" He recognized the dark taint, a flicker of something akin to fear, or perhaps fascination, in his eyes.

Kaelen didn't answer. He charged, his blade a blur, fueled by a cold, burning rage. He met Varkos in a clash of steel and clashing Auras. Varkos's dark energy slammed against Kaelen's tainted Aura, creating a jarring shockwave that rattled the room.

"Kaelen!" Princess Aurelia cried, a mixture of relief and horror in her voice.

General Valerius, recovering from his shock, immediately moved to protect the King, drawing his own Aura-infused sword. "My son! You're alive!"

The battle in the command chamber was fierce. Kaelen, despite his lingering injuries and the drain of his tainted Aura, fought with a terrifying efficiency, anticipating Varkos's moves, deflecting his powerful blows. He was no longer just defending; he was attacking, pushing Varkos back, forcing him to react. The dark taint in Kaelen's Aura allowed him to resonate with Varkos's own magic, to subtly disrupt his spells, to find openings.

Varkos roared in frustration. "This is impossible! You should be dead! And that power… it's unnatural!"

Kaelen didn't respond. He pressed his attack, his blade a relentless storm. He was fighting not just for Eldoria, but for Borin, for the ghosts of his past, for the future he was desperate to forge.

Suddenly, a powerful blast of dark magic erupted from Varkos's free hand, aimed directly at Princess Aurelia. Kaelen saw it coming, the chilling clarity of foresight, but he was too far, too engaged with Varkos's blade.

"Aurelia!" Kaelen screamed.

General Valerius lunged, throwing himself in front of the Princess, his Aura flaring, taking the full brunt of the spell. He cried out, collapsing, his body wracked by dark energy.

"Father!" Gareth roared from the walls, having sensed the surge of dark magic, his A-rank Aura flaring with desperate power. He abandoned his position, leaping from the wall, charging towards the command tower, leaving a gap in the defenses.

Kaelen felt a cold dread. His father was down. Gareth had abandoned his post. This was another disaster. His foresight, his power, hadn't been enough. He was still losing.

Varkos, seeing the chaos he had wrought, laughed, a harsh, triumphant sound. "Fools! You cannot defeat fate! Eldoria will fall!" He unleashed another devastating spell, aiming for the fallen General Valerius, to finish him.

Kaelen, his eyes burning with rage, intercepted the spell, taking the full force of it himself. The dark magic slammed into his already injured side, reopening his wound, sending a fresh wave of searing pain through him. He gasped, his Aura flickering wildly, the dark taint within him raging out of control. He collapsed, his body wracked with pain, his vision blurring.

"Kaelen!" Aurelia screamed, rushing to his side.

Varkos, seeing Kaelen fall, sneered. "Persistence is admirable, Valerius, but ultimately futile. You are broken. And now, Eldoria will break." He turned, preparing to unleash a final, devastating spell upon the command chamber, to shatter Eldoria's leadership.

The battle raged outside, but within the command chamber, Eldoria's fate hung by a thread. Kaelen was down, General Valerius was down, and Varkos was poised to strike a killing blow. The cost of foresight, the burden of trying to change destiny, was proving to be a heavy, agonizing one.
