Chapter 27: Ancient Defenses
The antechamber filled with an oppressive, crackling energy. The ancient device, far from succumbing to Kenji's ARDC script, seemed to have interpreted the "Aetheric Contamination Mimic" not as something to passively shield against, but as an active threat requiring an aggressive response. The "Sigma-Nine" latent receiver Kenji had detected might have been more than just for external signals; it could be part of an internal diagnostic that flagged his mimicry as a hostile override.
Arcs of sickly green Aether, tainted with Blight, lashed out from the device. One struck the cavern wall near the entrance, sending stone shards flying. Finn and his men at the passage opening yelled a warning, ducking back.
"Kenji, get out of there!" Martha roared from the passage.

[SAI - System Log/Threat Analysis - IMMEDIATE DANGER]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANCIENT DEVICE STATUS: Aggressive Defensive Mode Activated.
- Primary Emission: Corrupted Aether Discharge (Arc Lightning).
- Damage Potential: High (Direct Hit likely lethal to unshielded organics).
- Area of Effect: ~3-5 meter radius around device.
- Secondary Effect: Localized Blight Aether Saturation - Increasing.
- Risk: Rapid Blight corruption for prolonged exposure.
USER RECOMMENDATION: IMMEDIATE EVACUATION OF ANTECHAMBER.
ARDC Script - Stage 2 (SROE) deployment aborted by system
due to unacceptable risk parameters.

"No! I almost had it!" Kenji gritted his teeth, the Warding Stone amulet flaring with a faint warmth against his skin as it tried to dampen the chaotic Aether. His SAI was a maelstrom of warnings, but one piece of data caught his eye: the device's energy was spiking, but its core Aetheric structure was also showing signs of instability, like an old engine pushed too hard.
Its defenses are powerful, but maybe they're also draining its damaged core?
"Lyra! Can you create a shield? Just for a few seconds!" Kenji yelled over the din.
Lyra, though visibly terrified, nodded resolutely. Her small form blazed with green-white light as she poured her own Aether into a barrier, far stronger than the one she'd managed against the Putrid Wolf. It shimmered into existence just as another arc of Blighted lightning shot towards them. The arc struck Lyra's shield, and the barrier buckled violently, Lyra letting out a pained squeak, but it held.

[SAI - System Log/Companion Ability Analysis]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
COMPANION (Lyra - Sylphid):
- Ability Activated: 'Sylphic Ward - Empowered' (Boosted by pure ambient
Aether from Heartstone proximity and user resonance
via Warding Stone Amulet).
- Shield Integrity: 60% (Rapidly degrading under Aetheric assault).
- Estimated Time to Failure: 5-7 seconds.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Empowered by the Heartstone and the amulet! Kenji realized. This was their chance. The device was expending massive energy on its attacks, and Lyra's shield, though temporary, gave him a window.
"The SROE script! I have to try it now, while its defenses are focused and its core is stressed!" He ignored his SAI's abortion of the script and manually re-initiated Stage 2, pouring his will and the last dregs of his Aether into the complex data packet. This time, he wasn't just sending a "low resources" signal; he was trying to inject a Kernel Panic command directly into what he now perceived as the device's most vulnerable processing node, a section of the crystalline lattice that glowed erratically during its defensive discharges.
The mental strain was agonizing. Black spots danced in his vision. The Warding Stone burned hot against his skin.

[SAI - System Log/ARDC Script - Stage 2 MANUALLY RE-INITIATED]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SCRIPT: 'System Resource Overload Exploit' (SROE) - ACTIVE.
TARGETING: Device Core Processing Node (Identified Vulnerability K-07).
INJECTING AETHERIC DATA PACKET ('Kernel Panic' Variant).
AETHER CONSUMPTION (SROE): 12 Units (User reserves critically depleted).
MENTAL STRAIN: EXTREME.
WARNING: User vital signs deteriorating. Risk of Aetheric Coma: HIGH.
'Architect's Spark' Protocol attempting to stabilize...
minimal Aether siphon insufficient for current strain.

The device shrieked, a sound that was both mechanical and organic. The lashing Aether arcs intensified for a moment, then sputtered. The pulsating green light within its core flickered wildly, like a dying star. Lyra's shield shattered, and she slumped, exhausted, onto Kenji's shoulder.
The arcs of corrupted Aether ceased. The oppressive energy in the antechamber lessened dramatically. The device's green glow faded to a dull, almost imperceptible throb.
Then, with a final, shuddering groan that echoed through the stone, the ancient machine fell silent. The Blighted tendrils around the Heartstone withered and turned to dust.
Kenji collapsed to his knees, gasping, his vision swimming. "Did... did it work?"
