Chronicles of Magic-Machine

Chapter 33: The Three Paths(2)

The air inside the trial chamber was suffocating—not from heat or pressure, but from the weight of the unknown. Orion, Sienna, and Rina stood in the vast, dimly lit arena, the ground beneath them shifting as if alive.

A mechanical hum vibrated through the chamber, followed by a voice—cold, clinical, and omnipresent.

[ Trial Two: The Three Paths. Each path will test your current layer of Mortal Awakening. ]

The arena trembled. The floor cracked and reformed, splitting into three distinct paths, each pulsing with an unfamiliar energy.

The first path roared with intense heat, rivers of fire coursing through jagged, charred terrain. The air shimmered violently, distorting the space around it.

The second path was an abyss—an expanse of absolute darkness. Even sound seemed to vanish into its depths. The longer they stared, the more it felt like something was staring back.

The third path shimmered, reality bending and twisting like a mirage. But unlike a simple illusion, its structure shifted constantly, refusing to settle into anything tangible.

Orion's sharp gaze studied each path, his mind already racing with calculations. "Three choices. Strength, perception, and endurance…?"

A cold chime rang out.

[ Incorrect assumption. Did you think the choices would be so simple? ]

Tension passed between them.

---

The Trials Were Changing

"The clan elders never told us about this," Sienna muttered, arms crossed.

"They didn't need to," Orion said, though there was a flicker of uncertainty in his voice.

"They should have," Rina countered, tapping her temple. "Trials get harder every generation, but no one ever says by how much."

Sienna frowned. "If the trials evolve each time, then how do we even know what the 'original' trials looked like?"

Orion clenched his jaw. That was a good point.

What if their generation wasn't being tested—but being pushed beyond limits no one had survived before?

---

The Overseer's Challenge

[ Select your path. Your choice is permanent. ]

Sienna narrowed her eyes. "What happens if we fail?"

A cold pause.

Then the Overseer replied, [ You adapt. Or you break. ]

No further explanation.

Orion's grip tightened. This wasn't just about skill or power. The Overseer was watching them hesitate, analyzing their every move.

[ Sienna. Your breath just hitched. Doubt will break you. ]

She stiffened. "I wasn't—"

[ Orion. You assume endurance alone will suffice. Predictable. That is why you struggle with strategy. ]

Orion gritted his teeth.

[ Rina. You believe perception makes you superior. Arrogance often leads to regret. Will you still choose illusion? ]

Rina smirked, but for the first time, she felt the weight of its words.

This AI… it was not normal.

---

The Choice

Orion stepped toward the Path of Fire. The heat radiating from it was far beyond natural. His instincts screamed at him—this wasn't a normal test of endurance. He clenched his fists. If strength alone isn't enough, I'll make it enough.

Sienna inhaled deeply before stepping toward the Path of Darkness. It wasn't just an absence of light—it was an absence of self. She exhaled. Control isn't about seeing—it's about knowing.

Rina hesitated for a fraction of a second before stepping toward the Path of the Shifting Maze. Unlike the others, this path refused to settle, its structure shifting unpredictably. I don't just read patterns—I rewrite them.

As they crossed into their chosen paths, the Overseer's voice echoed one last time.

[ Trial Commencing. Assessment Engaged. ]

Then the world changed.

The Trap is Set

Orion – The Crushing Inferno

Orion's muscles screamed in protest. The flames weren't just hot—they carried weight. Every step he took, the pressure around him increased, dragging his body down. If he kept moving blindly, his body would collapse under its own mass.

Think, Orion.

This wasn't just a test of endurance—it was a test of how he adapted to suffering.

---

Sienna – The Abyss of Silence

Sienna gasped. The moment she stepped into the void, everything vanished—her heartbeat, her breath, her sense of existence.

Her body was gone.

She wasn't drowning, wasn't suffocating, wasn't falling.

She simply wasn't.

Then she felt it. A presence in the dark.

Watching.

Waiting.

Her fingers twitched, but she couldn't even tell if they existed anymore.

Am I still here?

She exhaled—except she didn't.

And something moved in response.

---

Rina – The Endless Maze

Rina stepped forward. The world around her shattered.

It wasn't a sudden shift—it was like she had never been anywhere else.

She stood in a narrow corridor, walls twisting at impossible angles, pathways stretching infinitely in every direction. A maze.

No. Not a maze.

A shifting labyrinth.

She took a step forward, and the path behind her twisted, walls closing in, new passages forming. Nothing remained constant.

Rina smirked. "An illusion?"

A voice—her own voice—whispered from the walls.

[ Are you sure? ]

Her smirk faded slightly.

She reached out, brushing her fingers against the wall. Solid. Cold. Too real.

Not just an illusion.

A living space that responded to her actions.

A puzzle where perception alone wasn't enough.

Rina inhaled slowly. "Alright then. Let's play."
