Chapter 16: The Truth?
Chain Scripts?
In the freezing room light, words echoed in Velmir's mind, his senses sharpened, and he perceived everything in the room, trying to find a clue in the papers.
"There's...nothing?" - He rushed, and failed.
There wasn't anything that would be helpful. Therefore, he... tried something.
"The book..." - The only answer to this is the book, though he hesitated. "What if... she notices it...?" But quickly, a barely noticeable smile appeared on his face while he nodded respectfully.
Tiny compressed sparks formed behind him. A step back, bumping into the sofa with his compressed magic released, faking an accident. "bpm!" The sound of a fake collision, created by the compression.
The sofa tremored, and some papers moved slightly. In that moment, he used his senses instantly. Through his imagination, the construction of the world felt like an equation, waiting for him to solve and get through.
The lamp, the books behind, the dusk, the papers, and finally the lines in that book! Like a small rat, hiding from its threat, his vision crept through everything with only one purpose... the book.
...
...
...
"Atlantis...?"
The word gave him a sense of familiarity, yet it struck him immediately, almost exposing him. It wasn't memory... but a ripple through his mind. Still, Velmir quickly realized and recalled his vision in a hurry.
"...Sorry Miss, I didn't watch m-"
"It's fine."
Without letting Velmir finish his words, she replied right away with a stare but quickly handled him with an... unexpected smile?
He wasn't expecting this; therefore, he stood there for a minute before lowering his head in silence and turning away from the freaky atmosphere.
"Click" ... The sound of an opening door... but it wasn't his. A presence... From the direction the sound came from, he looked at it. A tall, attractive figure was standing in front of the door. Quiet, unshakable with a prideful look.
Through the mask, his face couldn't be seen; instead, only his pure black, layered with some tangle, showed on his hair.
"0250" - Class A06.
Details captured. The man sauntered past Velmir while the two ignored each other...But that was only his thought.
Heat... like a raging current, it flowed in his body, heart, veins, even his blood felt aflame. strange... it was too strange. He panicked with his face turned pale.
A quick turn, boots, clothes, the man's entire body was examined by Velmir, and... he found something.
"A red mark!?" - Lion... it was a mark that looked like a lion carved onto the man's right palm. Surely enough, it faded in seconds. In his surprise, Velmir was curious, yet he didn't take the risk.
"No... I shouldn't."
In the hustle and bustle crowd, Velmir joined in and disappeared from the room, even before the man could turn back. In the hallway, he lost his thoughts, walked away subconsciously, dazzled, clutching the wall to prevent himself from falling.
The heat. It was getting out of control. Velmir, with a blurry vision, quickly came to the closest room to hide in it.
The door was a large one, yet he didn't care too much. All he wanted was rest.
"Knock." The sound of the door quickly vanished within the crowd.
"Library?" Velmir blinked a couple of times before going in.
In his efforts, he came upstairs to the emptiest chamber and lay against the wall in pain with his right hand held tightly his left one.
The space darkened, and the golden sparks were released into the air. On his verge of losing consciousness, the scent of old books wafted around Velmir.
Books floated while their pages turned nonstop, and like a miracle, it all gathered around him.
Line after line. All separated themselves from the books and hovered in front of Velmir.
He didn't have the time to react; only his eyes widened. In the blink of an eye... "Swish!" Each word was a strike on the mark like an ink of truth, vanishing beneath the surface of the skin as if they had entered another dimension.
"...What...?" - Confusion was everything that was left on his mind. Still, it didn't stop.
"Whizz!" - In a matter of seconds, his mark unleashed a pillar of light. It contained all the words before, arranging all of them into the books while his vision slowly faded.
In the last effort to regain his sight, he tried to concentrate in the heat, but it wasn't working. As darkness slowly appeared in the corners of his vision, he witnessed the pillar gradually stop, and lines were coming back.
However, there was... something odd. "...A non-touched... book?" - Velmir asked before smiling bitterly and letting out a breath heavy with burning "...No one told me... it'd hurt like this..."
His last sentence was filled with doubt as Velmir collapsed onto the old wooden ground.
"It felt like something ancient was bonding with him - not from pain, but from truth."
The room felt still. The books slowly lowered back to their places, pages closing as if nothing had ever happened, leaving the man on the floor.
The golden light faded, but one book remained. It was on the ground, untouched, unmoved. Untouched by humans for hundreds of years, unmoved for centuries, like a fragment that was left by time.
Was it resisted? Who knows...
It remained, unwilling to let anyone read it, yet this time... it changed. Faint silver began to etch itself across its spine, like water in its current. Then, without a single page opening, faint silver sparks formed around it.
The mark on his left palm pulsed once - dimly, tired.
Then, silence. Cold and fulfilled.
A moment passed. Then another.
And somewhere - hidden above this mysterious world, under a vast, unending sky - a crystal sphere cracked. Just slightly.
The stars shifted.
