Chapter 53: Chapter 53: Demon Slayer’s Nemesis
"@Admin. Kevin, I've managed to capture three demons so far, but they're all just lower-ranked ones. Only one of them has any blood demon art. But the problem is... I can't send them to you," Shinobu Kocho suddenly pinged Kevin Cross in the group chat.
"Huh? Can't send them to me?" Kevin blinked in confusion, then remembered chat group transmissions didn't support living beings yet.
While members could use the chat to send food or items, living creatures people, animals, or anything alive simply couldn't be transferred.
Kevin frowned. The zombie virus Saeko had sent was technically a form of life, yet it had gone through. But the zombies themselves couldn't be transmitted. And now, demons couldn't be sent either.
"Try chopping them up and sending a piece. Start with a hand," Kevin suggested after a moment's thought.
"Alright, I'll give it a try," Shinobu replied. She instructed Kanao to cut off one of the demon's arms.
Moments later, Kevin received the transmission. He opened it and saw... a severed hand.
The hand twitched slightly, as though it was still trying to grab something. It looked disturbingly alive.
Soon, Shinobu began sending over more parts legs, bits of torsos everything but the head.
"The head can't be transmitted," Shinobu explained.
"I see. Then don't worry about the head," Kevin replied.
He didn't fully understand the group's transmission logic. Maybe anything with higher-level consciousness couldn't pass through, but simpler parts could. He couldn't be sure.
Still, it was good enough. With demon limbs in hand, Kevin could finally begin experimentation.
He started by tossing one of the hands into direct sunlight. Instantly, it began to melt away, like it had been dropped into superacid. In a second, it was completely gone.
So it was confirmed sunlight from any world could destroy demons.
As for the rest, Kevin contacted Dr. Stern and had the body parts delivered to the lab.
"Oh my god, boss, what is this stuff? These limbs are... twitching. They're full of vitality, but it's weird, unnatural," Dr. Stern gasped as he examined the samples.
"This is that new project I told you about. Just remember the same rule as always nothing dangerous. I don't want to wake up one day to find the world ending."
"But boss, science always involves risk! If we banned all danger, we wouldn't get anywhere"
"No arguments. I don't care. No risky research. These are parts of a species called demons. They're functionally immortal and can only be killed by sunlight or the venom from a plant called wisteria. Nothing else works. Also, they feed on humans. I need you to test if UV light can kill them, and if possible, develop a device that can replicate sunlight well enough to destroy them."
Dr. Stern muttered under his breath, then shrugged. "Actually, we've already got devices that simulate sunlight. They're used in agriculture xenon lamps and xenon arc tubes. Not cheap, but definitely not rare either. I'll order a batch and run tests."
"Xenon lamps, huh? Sounds good. Test them out and let me know the results."
"You got it, boss."
Thanks to Kevin's endless budget, the equipment was delivered quickly. Tests began immediately.
The ultraviolet lamps did some damage to the demon samples noticeable, but far less than natural sunlight. After all, UV rays were just one component of sunlight. However, the xenon lamps worked surprisingly well, producing effects almost identical to real sunlight.
Satisfied, Kevin began mass purchasing xenon lamps. Science really was something. Who would've thought humanity could reproduce sunlight with tech?
Once he had enough, he packed them up, ready to deliver them to Shinobu. Since he had some free time, Kevin decided to personally travel to the Demon Slayer world.
"So you're the group admin?" Shinobu asked, blinking as she took in the sight of the tall, strikingly handsome young man who had just arrived. Her eyes sparkled slightly.
She had already seen his photo in the chat, and thought he was attractive. But in person, he was even better looking. Like a character straight out of a painting.
"Hey, Shinobu! I'm Kevin Cross. Nice to finally meet you," Kevin greeted her cheerfully, his smile bright and easy.
Shinobu felt her heart flutter. That dazzling smile, paired with his relaxed demeanor, made her cheeks warm involuntarily. Her usual polite expression softened into something more sincere, even a little shy.
"P-pleased to meet you too," she stammered, her tone unusually bashful.
"These are the items I brought. Xenon lamps devices that can seriously damage demons, nearly as effective as sunlight. They're simple to use too, just flip the switch," Kevin said as he pulled the equipment out.
He hadn't come to flirt or build rapport. Straight to business.
Shinobu was momentarily speechless. Still, despite the awkward transition, she felt genuine excitement.
After all, slaying demons had been her life's mission. These were weapons with the potential to change everything. Her heart raced as she reached out to receive them.
"In my world, these aren't anything special, so don't worry about using them sparingly. Burn through as many as you need," Kevin said with a casual grin.
