"Chasing Stars, Finding You"

Chapter 3: "A Step Closer"

The following evening, Mia found herself back at the park, almost instinctively. She had spent the entire day lost in thoughts of Lucas, replaying their conversation from the night before. There was something about him—about the way he understood her without trying too hard—that left an imprint on her heart.

As she approached their usual bench, she spotted him before he saw her. He was sitting with his elbows on his knees, staring up at the stars with the same thoughtful expression he had worn the first night they met. The sight made her smile.

"Is this seat taken?" she asked, echoing the words from their first meeting.

Lucas looked up, his lips curving into a slow grin. "Only by you."

She sat beside him, the quiet night wrapping around them like a warm embrace. The city was still alive in the distance, but here, in this little oasis of peace, it felt like another world.

"You always seem lost in thought when I see you," Mia observed, turning slightly toward him. "What's on your mind tonight?"

Lucas sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. "Everything and nothing," he said. "Ever feel like life is passing by too fast, but at the same time, you're stuck in place?"

Mia nodded. "All the time."

He chuckled, the sound low and genuine. "Guess that makes two of us."

Silence settled between them again, but it wasn't uncomfortable. It was something else—something softer, almost fragile, as if breaking it with the wrong words might make it disappear.

"I never asked," Lucas said after a while, turning his gaze to her. "What do you do?"

Mia shrugged. "I work at a bookstore. It's small but quiet. I like it."

"Sounds like a perfect place for someone who loves getting lost in thoughts."

She smiled. "Yeah. I guess books have always been my escape."

Lucas considered that for a moment. "You ever think about writing one?"

Mia hesitated. "I used to. When I was younger, I'd fill notebooks with stories. But as I got older, life got in the way. It felt... unrealistic."

"Why?" he asked, genuinely curious.

She sighed. "Because dreams don't always pay the bills."

Lucas was quiet for a moment before he said, "Maybe not. But that doesn't mean they're not worth chasing."

Mia looked at him, searching his face for any sign that he was just saying what she wanted to hear. But there was no pity in his expression, no empty encouragement. Just sincerity.

"What about you?" she asked, steering the conversation away from herself. "What do you do?"

Lucas hesitated, as if he wasn't sure how to answer. "I'm between things right now. Used to be an architect, but..." He trailed off, his eyes clouding for a moment before he shook his head. "Let's just say life had other plans."

Mia didn't push for more. She could tell that whatever had happened was something he wasn't ready to talk about yet. And that was okay.

Instead, she offered him a small smile. "Maybe life doesn't always go as planned, but that doesn't mean we can't find our way back to something meaningful."

Lucas glanced at her, something flickering in his eyes—something almost like relief. "You're a lot wiser than you give yourself credit for, Mia."

She laughed softly. "I don't know about that. I think I just spend too much time overthinking things."

"Maybe. Or maybe you just see the world differently."

Mia wasn't sure what to say to that, so she let the silence return, letting the weight of their words settle between them. It was strange, this connection she felt with Lucas. It wasn't forced or complicated. It just... was.

After a while, Lucas stood, stretching his arms above his head. "Come on."

Mia raised an eyebrow. "Where?"

"You trust me?" he asked, a teasing glint in his eyes.

Mia hesitated for only a second before nodding. "Yeah. I think I do."

"Good," he said, offering his hand.

She took it without question.

They walked through the park together, past the empty swings and darkened pathways. Mia didn't ask where they were going. She didn't need to. There was something freeing about not knowing, about simply letting the night lead them wherever it wanted.

After a few minutes, they reached a small clearing just beyond the park's edge. It was quiet, untouched by the city's hum, the grass still damp from the evening air. Above them, the stars stretched endlessly, shimmering against the dark sky.

"Wow," Mia whispered, taking in the view.

Lucas sat down in the grass, pulling her down beside him. "I found this place a while ago. Thought you might like it."

She turned to him, her heart swelling with something she couldn't quite name. "You were right."

They lay back on the grass, side by side, staring up at the vast sky. The night stretched before them, endless and full of unspoken promises.

"You ever think about how small we are?" Lucas mused. "How tiny our problems must seem compared to all this?"

Mia smiled. "All the time."

Lucas turned his head to look at her. "Maybe that's the secret. Maybe we just have to remember that we're part of something bigger."

Mia met his gaze, feeling the weight of his words settle deep within her. "Maybe," she murmured.

They didn't say much after that. They didn't need to. Sometimes, the quiet said everything that words couldn't.

As they lay beneath the endless sky, Mia couldn't help but feel that she was one step closer to finding whatever it was she had been searching for all along.
