Chapter 50: Ghostly Bells
People fought against monsters and other creatures that sought destruction and devouring, but that did not mean that people were allies.
No one but humans knew how to so effectively kill other humans. In this, they were unmatched among beasts and monsters alike.
This was not because humans were bloodthirsty creatures devoid of mind, the reason was quite the opposite.
A cold wind swept across the Desolate Meadow, brought by the deep night to accompany the dead on their final journey.
Among the dozens of people who came here to take part in the Thunder of Four Howls, only six remained alive.
Recently, there have been two more.
"Agh..." Loena exhaled cold breath, while blood dripped from her sleeves.
The last two participants stood before her — cut to pieces, brutally but neatly. Loena knew how to wield a sword to bring death quickly and quietly.
Her opponents could not be called weak. Like her, they were First Rank Carriers and survived to this stage, but they had no hope.
"Why try if you never had a chance in the first place?" Loena muttered, looking at her reflection in the blade. "I'll never understand... If you're destined to stay at the bottom, just learn to live there. Why try to take a place at the top that doesn't belong to you?"
Of course, Loena was convinced that her place was at the very top. She was ready to prove it over and over again.
'Hmm?'
Loena turned around, watching as Sera, Ethan, and the others rushed toward the Walking Crypt from different sides.
'They're up to something.' She looked up at the intensifying lightning. 'Well, one way or another, I can't ignore the Lost Knight's wishes. I have to get the bell if I want to fight him.'
Like any swordsman from the Hail of Swords, Loena wanted to participate in the tournament that would take place in a year to defend the honor of the Crownhold.
Defeating the Lost Knight would guarantee her a spot. There was no doubt about that.
Most of the other swordsmen had the same goal, and Klaus was no exception. Everyone had different reasons for wanting to participate in the tournament, but this was the catalyst for everything.
Whooooosh.
Sera stopped, holding the iron handle.
"Ready?"
Ethan and the others nodded.
The only one who didn't have an iron handle was Aime, as she had a different task. She was supposed to hold the Walking Crypt in place when the monster started to panic.
At the same time, Ethan, Klaus, Sera, and Kael threw the iron handles, and the sharp tips dug into the ground like rods.
The Walking Crypt looked around in confusion, but when the iron handles glinted, his empty eyes widened. Perhaps the Walking Crypt was simply doing his job, but he was not devoid of intelligence and had extensive experience fighting the Carriers who returned to this field again and again.
Red ropes shot out from each handle in two directions, one heading toward the Walking Crypt's legs and the other toward its owner.
Thus, four people from different corners now held ropes in their hands, the iron handles acting as levers to increase their strength, and two ropes were wrapped around each of the terrifying monster's legs.
"ROOOOAAAAARRR!!!"
The Walking Crypt roared as he thrust his torso forward, trying to get rid of the handles. It would be enough to remove one to leave them no chance.
At the same time, the purple strings tightened around the chains on his back as Aime tried to hold the Walking Crypt in place.
Sure, their strength was nowhere near equal, and it wouldn't be three seconds before her strings broke and the Walking Crypt threw her aside like a weightless puppet.
But she wasn't the main driving force behind their plan.
Squeak.
At the same time, Ethan and the others pulled on the ropes with all their might, moving clockwise.
The Walking Crypt was big and strong, but his legs were thin and unstable. All it took was a slight disturbance to his balance for the giant to collapse to the ground.
"RGHOOOOO!!!!"
In an attempt to get rid of them, the Walking Crypt swung his four arms. He wanted to reach Sera, but as soon as he tried to step forward, his legs got tangled in the ropes.
Thump!
With a crash, the Walking Crypt collapsed to the ground. The coffins on his back shook along with the chains as the fog thickened.
None of this was an obstacle for Ethan's team. This was the result they wanted from the beginning.
Almost simultaneously, they all grabbed a bell and ran off in different directions amid the loud rumbling of thunder.
No one was left without a bell, as everyone chose which one to take before the start.
Perhaps humans were each other's most vicious enemies, but when they worked together, they could achieve impressive results on all levels.
Ethan glanced at Sera and Kael.
'Hmm, I have to admit that without these two, we wouldn't have made it. Well, if I knew where I was going, I would be prepared, too. I don't know how much these iron handles cost, but they are powerful Products.'
"Ghooo!"
The Walking Crypt let out a pitiful scream, like a crying child. He struggled to his feet and realized that he lost almost all of his bells.
All five were far away. The Walking Crypt was too slow to catch up with them, so all he could do was defend the last one.
'Speaking of which...' Ethan's eyes darted to the side.
Step. Step. Step.
Moving alone, Loena approached the Walking Crypt as if she could defeat him herself.
It wasn't true, but she did not doubt that she would reach her goal before the next thunder strike hit.
The Walking Crypt spun around, reaching out with both arms to grab Loena and eat her like the man before her.
"You're nothing. Don't you dare touch me!" Loena shouted as energy coursed through her body.
The crescent blade that flew out with the swing of her sword cut off the Walking Crypt's arms, right at the elbows.
Then, Loena jumped forward, grabbed the last bell, and before the other two arms could catch her, she bounced off the coffin, landing several meters away.
Sera clenched her teeth.
'That bitch... Because of her, now I feel like our plan was pointless!'
All six bells were picked up, which meant it was time for the final thunder strike and the awakening of the Lost Knight.
