Chapter 749: Daphne vs. Draco — Stepping Forward!!! (II)
The students, the Professors, the referees, and even Draco, the dueler on the dueling platform, gawked at the thing that had appeared before them.
Black-scaled, with multicolored markings on its body, Seviper bared its long red fangs as it took the stage, a thin thread of black mist still connecting it to the Grimoire hovering above Daphne's head.
"Blimey! What is that?!!!" Ron mumbled out in shock, his face paling as if it was him who would be fighting it.
Standing next to him, Harry too had gone quiet.
They had thought that, like Hermione, Daphne too would be hard-pressed to use her Skill in the open. Now, as Harry looked at the strange book Daphne had taken out, he knew they had thought it wrong.
Dolores Umbridge couldn't tell what was going on. But she knew one thing — It wouldn't be bad if the abomination got Lucius' spawn; that unruly child!
Hissssssssssssss!
On the dueling platform, the over 8-foot-long creature hissed, brandishing its scimitar-like red tail.
Draco involuntarily stepped back.
Behind him, Madam Villanelle's eyes were almost popping out, disbelieving the sight.
It was only a few days before that Darcie and Daphne had approached her, asking for help to grow stronger.
She knew the little Greengrass must have been influenced by her friend's exponential growth for her to be so desperate.
However, despite taking Daphne as her student in the field of magical creatures, there wasn't much she could do for her.
It was then Darcie had suggested something truly outrageous, but… sensible — To let Daphne use the Daemonologie the Grimoire!
The Grimoire was no child's plaything to just hand out to anyone.
It was Merlin who had handed over the Grimoire to the Order, but even for them, its origins were lost in history.
Perhaps the other Five knew, but if they did, they hadn't shared it with Madam Villanelle.
All she knew was that the Lord of Azkaban, Ekrizdis, shared a blood connection with the Grimoire.
That, too, she had come to know late, after the dark wizard had snatched her control over it.
In the Battle of Legends, she almost lost her life because of that mistake.
Regardless of the regrets, this would have been enough of a reason to reject Daphne's request… if times had been different.
Seeing the desperation in Daphne's eyes, Madam Villanelle had realized something.
Do-overs might not happen again and again… What if she, the reincarnated Witch of Endor, wouldn't remain as lucky as before in the next battle?
She would again reincarnate, of course, but she wouldn't be Madam Villanelle anymore. The Order would just take the Grimoire back and give it to someone else.
Then why not choose her successor by herself this time, instead of letting others dictate it after she was gone?
Not to mention, as long as they were in Hogwarts, it wouldn't be so bad to let Daphne try her hand with the Grimoire.
The tricky thing was that Grimoire had its… personality, for the lack of a better word.
Not just anyone could summon creatures out of it.
Newt Scamander had done it because of his love for the magical creatures.
Madam Villanelle could do it because the Grimoire resonated with her legacy, which could be traced back to the Biblical Witch of Endor.
For Daphne, it would be a matter of great surprise if she summoned even a morphed creature.
Or so Madam Villanelle had believed.
As the massive serpent slithered on the dueling platform, she realized how wrong she had been.
I always knew Daemonologie could summon existences from other dimensions… Madam Villanelle thought, feeling old. But I never succeeded… never…
Suddenly, the High Councilor remembered what Dumbledore had told her.
— We all have our parts to play in the coming War. But, if we won, it would be because of the next generation of wizards and witches… for on their shoulders rest the greatest burden.
…
"Do you yield?" Daphne asked, her words echoing along with hisses in the silence.
She didn't know why Darcie had been so sure that no one would be able to tell if she was using the Grimoire or not.
But, with Darcie, Daphne had learned to not demand answers to most questions.
Perhaps, Darcie didn't know herself. Contrary to what others thought of her friend, Daphne knew how clueless Darcie could be to her own instincts.
"Draco!" Harry shouted from the crowd. "Get out of it!!!"
"Or we are writing to your father!" Ron added.
Many mouths twitched at that, lightening the tension.
Slowly, but surely, the unnerved expression on Draco's face melted away, a sneer springing up in its place. "You wish!"
Draco waved his wand, its tip tracing a slithering path of its own. "Serpensortia!"
With a flash of magic, a snake shot out of the wand.
The moment it landed on the platform, it raised its head and hissed at the creature in front of it.
"So be it." Daphne took a deep breath. "Poison Tail!"
Seviper!!!!!!!!!
The creature hissed, the bladed end of its tail glowing purple.
With one swift slither, Seviper's tail flashed, leaving behind a purple arc.
Before the crowd could even make sense of what kind of magic it was, the snake conjured by Draco lost its head, blood showering on the white platform.
Silence.
…
Roars and Cheers fill the Grand Hall as the Slytherins' shouts overwhelmed everyone.
Hufflepuffs, Ravenclaws, and almost all Gryffindors maintained the silence from before, though. No one wanted a Slytherin to win if that Slytherin wasn't Darcie.
Daphne cared little, blood rushing to her brain. "Haze!"
She knew how Draco's Spell worked. Darcie had told her things that probably even Draco didn't know about himself. So, the first thing she needed to do was to cloud his senses.
Draco must have realized that, too.
Thick, black smoke came pouring out of the strange creature's mouth.
Trails of smoke spilled off the dueling platform, but the bulk of it remained up, surrounding Draco in no time.
"Cough! Cough!" Draco coughed, putting a hand over his mouth.
Using the Spell, and remembering Daphne's last position, he fired a Banishing Charm in that direction.
The spell left a hole in the smoke as it went… and then disappeared.
Alarm bells rang in Draco's mind, but it was already too late.
"Wrap!"
A hiss resounded as the massive serpent coiled itself around Malfoy.
Outside, the students could hardly see anything, other than a blurry image of Draco with a massive, blackish thing coiled around him.
The smoke was dissipating, but it wasn't doing that fast.
Even though they couldn't see it clearly, they still knew it was all over for Draco.
If that wasn't enough, Daphne's lips moved, hammering the nail deeper. "Glare!"
In the smoky darkness, two red dots came alive.
Draco felt himself going paralyzed… the serpent's eyes were getting bigger in his vision, his breath abandoning his lungs.
As his chest kept getting squeezed with every struggle, Seviper's glare tore through his mind.
Even worse was that Draco had been using Acute Perception, heightening his senses.
Never had he imagined that his Spell would work against him.
Then the laugh came… like a giggle… like the croaking of a toad.
Dolores Umbridge, despite being a referee, was laughing.
Something snapped within Draco, then.
Under Seviper's Glare, his own eyes glowed… yellow.
The wrist of his hand, carrying the wand, traced the path of a spell.
Hot air came oozing out of the wand's tip, the entire smoke surrounding him billowing off in all directions.
The blurry appearance the students could see suddenly vanished as well.
The hot air also sent the smoke toward Daphne, covering her entire figure. She opened her mouth to give another command, but then… it happened.
Draco's trembling body paused.
He couldn't breathe, but he focused. He tried.
His nose began bleeding. The corners of his eyes split apart.
But, finally, he managed to sense Daphne's position, giving up on struggling against the serpent.
As Seviper tightened its grip on him once more, Draco spun onto himself, disapparating with a crack.
Another crack rumbled right behind Daphne.
She spun fast, but not fast enough; she didn't even have a wand.
Draco looked her in the eyes, put his wand on her chest, and petrified her on the spot.
