Cannon fodder in the Interstellar

Chapter 345 - From the Future

The fact that Dean Atchison and Su Luoxue got married and had children led the people of Earth to start doubting whether Ruo Manni and the others were actually humans from Earth, not from this era, but rather people from the future.

People with imaginative minds followed this line of thought and speculated that if it weren’t for their help, humanity would have suffered tremendous losses during the zombie siege over the past two years. A year ago, many people would have been killed by the cannonballs from the Star Alliance civilization.

This was probably not even the worst case. If Earth’s civilization didn’t ascend to a Level 2 civilization, there was a chance it could be reduced to a private planet of some faction within the Star Alliance civilization… Just thinking about these possibilities, everyone couldn’t help but feel sorrow for their generation and the fate of the next one.

The people from the future, in order to change the long period of suffering for Earth’s ancestors, came back from the distant future after acquiring the ability to travel through time and space to help their ancestors.

This version of the theory felt closer to the truth and gave the people of Earth more peace of mind.

After all, as the saying goes, “Aliens always have different hearts.” No matter how kind aliens might seem, they couldn’t possibly help Earth humans selflessly without any ulterior motive, except for their own descendants. Only descendants from the future would do something like this.

Thus, this legend spread widely among Earth’s high-ranking officials and gradually became the mainstream theory.

When Ruo Manni heard this theory, she wanted to tell them, “Ladies and gentlemen, you have quite an imagination! The bigger the sky, the bigger the imagination!”

However, this theory was more beneficial to Ruo Manni’s life on Earth, so she didn’t oppose it. In fact, she even let Lin Ruihai and Lin Kexin intentionally or unintentionally hint at the possibility.

When humanity first set out for interstellar travel, many people were eager to join the mission. When the name of the commander-in-chief was announced, it could be said that all the people on Earth turned their attention to Lin Ruihai.

It then dawned on them that, compared to the well-known Lin Kexin, Lin Ruihai seemed a bit more obscure. So, many didn’t realize that he was the world’s only Level 6 ability user (Lin Kexin was also a Level 6 telekinetic, but people didn’t know this; they only saw her as a Level 3 ability user). Lin Ruihai was the number one expert in the world, the older brother of the chief designer of the spacecraft, and a “connection” who could directly communicate with those in power.

Given all the factors, it was difficult to find anyone better suited than him to be the commander-in-chief for this Star Alliance mission. As a result, those with other ideas eventually gave up, and gradually, everyone agreed that Lin Ruihai was indeed the most suitable choice.

When the rumors about those people being descendants of future Earth humans spread, it further convinced everyone that the commander-in-chief had to be Lin Ruihai. If the future humans thought he was suitable, there must be a reason for it.

Some, upon realizing this, considered another possibility.

When the twelve future people first appeared in this world, they appeared in the southern part of Country X. After their arrival, they headed directly toward the B City survivor base, where they sought out Lin Ruihai and his sister Lin Kexin.

Because Lin Ruo Manni and Lin Kexin looked so alike, some people speculated that Lin Ruo Manni was probably a descendant of Lin Ruihai, which would explain how they knew about Lin Ruihai and Lin Kexin’s existence and where they lived.

However, many opposed this theory because, based on Earth’s current technology, it would take thousands of years of development to achieve time travel.

Over such a long period, even direct descendants would have a very diluted bloodline connection to their ancestors, making physical resemblance unreliable.

Therefore, most people believed it was more likely that Lin Ruihai and Lin Kexin would make significant contributions to history in the future—contributions so impactful that future generations would know about them. This would explain why the future humans knew about the siblings and came back to find them.

This wasn’t just idle speculation. After all, Lin Kexin had not only discovered new energy sources but was also the chief designer of humanity’s first spaceship.

As long as Earth’s civilization wasn’t interrupted during this alien crisis, Lin Kexin would certainly be remembered in history.

Lin Ruihai, as the commander-in-chief of humanity’s first venture beyond the solar system, would also make his mark in history if the mission succeeded. If Earth was recognized by the Star Alliance, Lin Ruihai would certainly be immortalized.

However, some voiced objections, secretly criticizing the future humans for not going back in time to stop the aliens before they spread the zombie virus, thus sparing humanity from the impending apocalypse.

Others argued that while the spread of the zombie virus was indeed a major catastrophe for humanity, it was also a great evolutionary leap. Future civilization might be built upon this evolution.

The future humans could change small events, but if they altered the course of history too drastically, it could shift the direction of human development, potentially affecting the future humans themselves.

In any case, there were many different opinions. For Ruo Manni, this sparked a new interest—while practicing, she enjoyed listening to the various speculations about the future humans from survivors across different countries.

“After we return to the Gus Empire, I’m afraid we will become part of a mysterious legend. I once speculated that it would be an alien legend, but who would have thought it turned into the future human version,” Ruo Manni gossiped with Lin Kexin.

“Isn’t that great? In the end, we will have left a mark in history here. What’s the point of living just to die quietly and unnoticed?” Lin Kexin said happily.

She then recalled her past: “Do you know what I was thinking right before I died in my previous life? I wondered if anyone would remember me after I was gone… So, I really enjoy these days. No matter how hard or tiring it gets, I’m willing to continue.”

Seeing Lin Kexin in this state, Ruo Manni couldn’t help but admit that staying on Earth was the best choice for Lin Kexin because this world needed her.

If Lin Kexin had returned to the Gus Empire with them, she would have been in an awkward position.

Actually, Ruo Manni felt the same. With her current mindset, she had no desire to stay on Earth. She had already gotten used to life in the interstellar era.

With the united efforts of various countries, the advantage of human survivors had expanded once again, and the number of zombies had sharply decreased.

By the time all the preparations for the spaceship were complete, the ratio of zombies to human survivors would be about two to one.

This Star Alliance journey would last at least ten years. In addition to the two hundred experts from various fields, one thousand soldiers had been selected, and the rest were family members.

Ruo Manni didn’t get involved in the matters of the scientists and experts. However, she did attend the soldier selection event in person.

Ruo Manni noticed that the people she had marked were all part of the selection, and she felt very satisfied. This showed the influence Lin Ruihai had in this matter.

At the selection event, Ruo Manni met the female captain of the 71st Rescue Team. Now, she was all clean and looked exceptionally heroic.

Because it was rare to have such an outstanding female compatriot, Ruo Manni made a point to talk to her for a few minutes. Sure enough, when the final list of selected personnel was released, Ruo Manni saw the female captain’s name.
