Chapter 129 - Backlash
The fourth-grade Red-Mouthed Strange Bird was out of their attack range, and the only team member in Team Asimu who could attack from a distance had been captured by it. Team Asimu found themselves momentarily helpless.
The team leader, Abulaiti Asimu, made a desperate move by hurling his large blade at the fourth-grade Red-Mouthed Strange Bird. The blade, cutting through the air, struck the bird’s abdomen, but caused no damage, instead enraging it further.
Just as the bird was about to pull the members away from the cliff and into the air, it suddenly paused and emitted a sharp cry.
Seizing the opportunity, the telepath managed to free himself from the bird’s claws. The five boys who had been pulled away from the cliff were forcefully swung back towards the cliff due to the tension of the climbing ropes. Although this collision wouldn’t cause severe injuries, it was still quite painful.
Fortunately, the remaining five team members still clinging to the cliff reacted quickly. They urgently pulled on the ropes to slow the impact as much as possible.
The four boys who were pulled away from the cliff were relatively okay. The impact with the cliff wasn’t too strong, and since they were level four warriors, they didn’t sustain any significant injuries.
But the telepath boy in the middle had a worse fate. Unable to find any support, he crashed hard against the cliff, producing a loud “thud.” Not only did Team Asimu feel the pain, but even Team Adam felt sympathetic, thinking that if it had been a direct hit, his nose might have been broken.
However, no one had the luxury to look up at the telepath’s condition because at that moment, the fourth-grade Red-Mouthed Strange Bird, after letting out two screeches and seemingly becoming disoriented like it was drunk, flapped its wings in a desperate attempt to fly upward but ended up flying erratically downward. It was then pushed a few times by some unseen force and landed in front of Hebrew Adam.
Seizing this rare opportunity, Hebrew Adam immediately struck with his blade, landing a solid blow to the Red-Mouthed Strange Bird’s neck.
Though no blood splattered, Hebrew Adam’s strike was so powerful that Ruo Manni suspected the bird’s neck might have been broken. The bird couldn’t even make a sound and fell like a stone.
At this point, the remaining Red-Mouthed Strange Birds around Team Adam had either been killed or fled, leaving no birds daring to challenge them.
After the bird was killed, Hebrew Adam glanced at Ruo Manni, his expression quite displeased.
Ruo Manni thought that Hebrew Adam was displeased because he was helping her opponents, but she was surprised when he reached out, pulled her to his side with the climbing rope, wrapped an arm around her waist, and held his knife in the other hand. He commanded, “From now on, don’t use your telekinesis. Rest for a bit while I protect you.”
Hebrew Adam spoke firmly and with noticeable anger. Though Ruo Manni found his tone a bit harsh, she didn’t dare to resist and leaned back against him to rest.
She had indeed overestimated herself. The mental strength required to face a second-grade Red-Mouthed Strange Bird versus a fourth-grade one was vastly different. When she attacked the fourth-grade bird’s mind directly with her telekinesis, it didn’t get hurt immediately and even retaliated with telekinesis. If her telekinesis hadn’t been several times stronger, she might have been counterattacked.
Although Ruo Manni ultimately won, it nearly consumed half of her remaining mental energy. She was now pale, dizzy, and feeling extremely unwell, with almost no strength left to stand. If more Red-Mouthed Strange Birds attacked her, she wouldn’t even have the strength to swing her sword.
Her low cultivation level was a significant drawback, making her as fragile as Lin Daiyu, which was quite difficult to endure.
Hebrew Adam likely realized this and pulled her to his side, holding her in place so she could rest.
Naturally, Ruo Manni would not refuse Hebrew Adam’s help at this moment. This was not the time for pretense. By staying close to Hebrew Adam, she could avoid further attacks from the Red-Mouthed Strange Birds.
Although many Red-Mouthed Strange Birds were attacking, there were also quite a few cadets on the cliff. After more than half an hour of fighting, many of the Red-Mouthed Strange Birds were killed.
Before the leading fourth-grade Red-Mouthed Strange Bird was killed, the morale of the attacking birds had already begun to wane. Therefore, once the leader was dead, the Red-Mouthed Strange Birds surrounding Team Adam and Team Asimu scattered quickly. Although there were still some Red-Mouthed Strange Birds elsewhere, they gradually flew away, and after ten minutes, all of them had disappeared.
Everyone clung to the cliff, panting. Fighting in such a place was truly torturous. Standing there as a stationary target was bad enough, but being unable to exert any force while suspended in mid-air was even more uncomfortable.
After the battle, although Team Adam had consumed a lot of energy, everyone except Ruo Manni was not injured. After resting for more than ten minutes, they had recovered a lot of their strength. Hebrew Adam then ordered everyone to continue climbing upward.
Ruo Manni had once again become Hebrew Adam’s backpack accessory. She found a bit of dark humor in the situation, thinking that if it weren’t for the backpack separating them, she’d be directly carried by the prince, which would be extremely awkward given the gender differences.
Previously, Hebrew Adam had held her waist and leaned her against his left side to help her close her eyes and rest.
Although the situation was special and necessary, Hebrew Adam was only doing his duty as the team leader.
However, Ruo Manni wasn’t used to such close proximity. In her two lifetimes, she had never been so close to a man. She didn’t like it, especially when it was Hebrew Adam.
Of course, if it were Hua Deli or Dean Atchison, she wouldn’t have minded as much. She wouldn’t have had any objections if they carried her, but unfortunately, those two weren’t on her team.
Team Asimu hadn’t moved yet; they were likely still healing and resting. In their recent battle with the fourth-grade Red-Mouthed Strange Bird, at least two of their members had been injured.
The telepath boy was particularly unfortunate, suffering a fate similar to Ruo Manni’s, and became a hanging ornament beneath Abulaiti Asimu’s backpack.
As Team Adam passed them, the entire Team Asimu looked at Ruo Manni with grateful eyes.
It was clear that Team Asimu realized that the fourth-grade Red-Mouthed Strange Bird had suddenly lost control because Ruo Manni, a level-five telepath, had come to their aid. Seeing her pale and being carried by Hebrew Adam, they not only didn’t find it awkward but were even more grateful. It was obvious that if she weren’t helping them, the goddess wouldn’t be so weak.
Abulaiti Asimu, representing his team, spoke up, “Thank you, Ruo Manni, for your help. It’s inconvenient now, but we will properly thank you when we return.”
“Ruo Manni”—what a down-to-earth way of addressing her. Ruo Manni thought to herself, smiling with a saintly expression, “There’s no need to be so polite. Although we are opponents now, in reality, we are classmates.”
