Chapter 195: Umi Tends to Everyone’s Wounds
After venting her sadness, Umi wiped her tears with the back of her hand. Her expression shifted from despair to determination. She looked up at Ren.
"Ren-senpai. Our first aid kit… do we still have it? The one we usually bring for club activities?"
Frowning slightly, Ren was caught off guard by the girl's sudden change in demeanor. "Why, Umi?"
"Because I'm not injured like the others." Umi replied, her gaze shifting to her friends lying on the ground. "I'll take care of them. I've had first aid training, so I at least know what to do for minor injuries."
"I figured you'd ask about that. Yeah, I grabbed everything useful from the bus wreckage. We're lucky—the first aid kit's only slightly damaged."
Without another word, Ren stood and walked to the pile of salvaged items. Moments later, he returned with a medium-sized first aid kit, its surface dented and dirty but its contents intact. He handed it to Umi.
"Thanks, Senpai. You're always reliable, no matter the situation."
Umi took the kit swiftly. With deft hands, she opened it and got to work.
She first approached Coach Takigawa. Carefully, she cleaned the dried blood on his head with antiseptic wipes, then bandaged the wound. She tried to stabilize his broken arm as best she could, searching for a small branch or hard object to use as a makeshift splint.
Next, she moved to Ryohei. Seeing his twisted leg, Umi swallowed hard. It was the most concerning injury. She couldn't do much beyond stabilizing his leg's position and providing light support to prevent further damage until help arrived.
Umi moved quickly from one person to the next. She carefully removed small glass shards from Minato's hands and feet with tweezers, causing him to wince occasionally, then cleaned and bandaged his wounds.
For Seiya, Umi cleaned a gash on his temple and covered bruises on his chest and stomach with clean cloth, trying to offer some comfort.
She even tended to scratches and scrapes on Nao and Rika's faces, giving Yuuna a small bandage.
"…"
Mafuyu watched Umi's every move. Biting her lower lip, she felt useless.
(It should be me. This is my role as a teacher, isn't it? To care for the students, to be their pillar of strength in times like this.)
(But what am I doing? I can't even stand without groaning in pain. I didn't even think to look for the first aid kit, let alone tend to them.)
Shame crept in. Mafuyu had always strived to project the image of a perfect, authoritative, capable teacher in front of her students—a façade she'd worked hard to maintain. But now, in this real crisis, that façade was crumbling.
(I can't even manage my own daily life, let alone an emergency like this. All that perfection was just a mask. They see a great teacher, but really, I'm just a woman incompetent at even basic household tasks.)
Her gaze dimmed as she watched Umi, far younger than her, doing what she should have done.
Mafuyu remained lost in her spiral of inadequacy. In her daily life, she was a brilliant career woman, a respected teacher. But behind her apartment door, reality was different. She survived on instant noodles and fast food because she couldn't cook even the simplest dishes. Her room was often a mess because she wasn't good at cleaning.
This fundamental incompetence stemmed from spending most of her youth training in ice skating. Now, Mafuyu faced the bitter truth of her helplessness.
Her academic prowess, her grace on the ice—it all felt hollow in the face of basic survival needs.

As Umi finished her emergency care, the students began to stir one by one.
Minato groaned softly, his eyes fluttering open.
"Ugh… my head… Why's it so cold?" His gaze fell on the bandage on his hand. "What… what happened?"
Soon after, Noa opened her eyes. She tried to sit up but gasped in pain from her knee. "I remember… we fell into the ravine… What now? Are we going to die here?"
Rika stirred, clutching her bruised forehead. "What's going to happen to us?"
"Will anyone find us? We can't spend the night in a place like this, can we?" Yuuna added, her voice trembling.
Umi tried to calm them, briefly explaining what happened and that she'd provided first aid.
"Everyone, stay calm. Everything will be okay. I'm sure the rescue team will come soon."
Amid the students' flurry of questions and fears, Coach Takigawa began to wake. He tried to move his injured arm, wincing in pain, before his eyes fell on the wrecked bus. A heavy sigh escaped him.
"This is all my fault. I should've paid more attention to the road. I should've ensured your safety. I… I failed to protect you all."
With effort, Mafuyu pushed herself upright, taking a deep breath. "Enough. This isn't the time for self-blame, Takigawa-san, or for despair!"
Her gaze swept over the pale, frightened faces around her.
"Help will come, that's certain. Sooner or later, they'll realize our bus is missing and start a search. We have no signal here, so we can't call for help. For now, all we can do is survive until rescue arrives."
Mafuyu turned to Ren, calm by the campfire.
"Rokuhara-kun explored while we were unconscious. According to him, the bottom of this ravine is in the middle of a vast forest. Wandering blindly will only get us lost and worsen things. Waiting is our best option right now."
All eyes turned to Ren. He was the only one who seemed calm and clear-headed among them.
Ren nodded, confirming Mafuyu's words.
"As Kirisu-sensei said, we're in a remote area. Umi and I weren't badly injured, thanks to luck. Nanao and Kaito, you have minor injuries but can still move. Coach Takigawa, Seiya, and Ryohei are the most seriously hurt."
"Since I'm the only man able to act, I'll take on the task of finding food and water around here."
Hearing this, Nanao felt compelled to help.
"No! I'll come with you, Rokuhara! I can't just sit here while you do everything. I can help search—at least gather firewood or find safe plants!"
Kaito, with a few scratches but still able to stand, spoke up too.
"Me too, Rokuhara! I'm not badly hurt, and my legs are fine. There's no way we're letting you handle this alone. We have to work together."
"Alright, I accept your offers."
Ren didn't refuse. After all, both boys could still move freely despite their minor injuries. Extra hands would speed up the search and lighten his load.
