CALAMITY : Legends Of The Chosen

Chapter 16: Chapter 12 - Whispers in the Flame

They're not the apex predators anymore.

Scene 1 Nightfall Campfire

The three Chosen sat under the fractured heavens, nestled in the quiet hum of Karl's half-functioning Nanite Dome, flickering like a fading snow globe.

Shojiro sat shirtless near the fire. His skin had healed, but the bruises still ached—echoes of the Bridge Massacre.

Karl hunched beside a junked-out fuel core, fingers stained with grease, nanites crawling slowly across his arm to patch minor damage.

Max leaned against a snapped transmission tower, fingers lazily crackling with residual black lightning, staring into the fire with unfocused eyes.

Max (quietly):

"The storm's... too quiet."

Karl (grunting):

"Don't say that. RIDA finally stabilized the dome. No surprises tonight."

Shojiro (resting his chin on his hand):

"I just want five hours of sleep without something chewing on my ribcage."

The fire sputtered softly.

The silence stretched.

Until it snapped.

Scene 2 The Presence Arrives

It began not with sound, but absence.

The temperature plummeted. Not dropped. Vanished. No wind. No chill. Just nothing.

> The fire extinguished. Not flickered. Gone. Like someone deleted it from reality.

RIDA (distorted):

"...ERROR... anomaly... detected—within dome."

The three stood in unison. No weapons drawn instinct braced them.

A figure stood between them and the dying nanite dome.

It had no right to be there.

It shouldn't exist.

Wispy. Human-ish. Dripping shadows like liquid smoke. Arms too long. A neck torn open sideways, hissing a sound no lungs could produce. And eyes… eyes like inverted voids blacker than the black behind stars.

Karl whispered:

"...It bypassed RIDA. That's impossible."

Shojiro's fists clenched. His VYTHRA surged, but it shivered—as if recoiling.

Scene 3 Shojiro Strikes

Without hesitation, Shojiro lunged.

His raw strength—unmatched.

His muscle structure flexed. Ligament Drift activated. Bones compressed for maximum output.

He struck the entity full-force in the chest

Nothing.

No resistance. No impact.

His fist passed through like punching a screaming idea.

A second later

A gash split across Shojiro's chest.

He recoiled, gasping, blood spraying only for Yggdrasil's regeneration to patch it instantly.

But that wasn't the problem.

Shojiro (wide-eyed):

"I didn't even see it move…"

Scene 4 Karl Fights Back

Karl's turrets unfolded with a whir of nanites.

Plasma bolts. Nanite drills. Anti-matter buckshot. EMP blast nets.

All of it phased through.

No response.

No hit markers. No feedback.

Karl (shouting):

"It's not real matter! It's not bound to rules—!"

Suddenly

He was yanked into the air by nothing. Slammed to the nanite dome wall. Blood flew from his mouth.

RIDA (distorted):

"...It does not consume flesh. It consumes… VYTHRA."

Scene 5 Max Tries

Max stepped forward, one palm lit with a halo of black lightning.

Max (muttering):

"C'mon… let's see if voltage does anything to ghosts."

He fired.

A streak of black lightning.

The entity twitched. Just for a heartbeat.

Then screamed. Not sound a rupture.

Reality wobbled.

But Max dropped to one knee, smoke curling off his shoulders.

Max (gasping):

"Barely hurt it… and it nearly fried my whole core…"

The entity pulsed—more visible now.

A walking void hunger.

Scene 6 Retreat

Karl (wheezing):

"We're outclassed—! Everyone MOVE!"

He barked a command.

The Nanite Dome dropped. Their transport activated in emergency mode.

They piled in, Max half-dragged into the side seat, Karl behind the wheel, Shojiro still bleeding.

The entity glided toward them. Not fast. Not slow. Just inevitable.

Shojiro:

"It's not chasing us… it's just following."

Scene 7 Max's Desperation

Max climbed out the top hatch, eyes glowing faintly silver.

He held out a trembling hand.

"If this doesn't work… tell people I went out like Zeus."

He gathered all remaining Catalyst VYTHRA in his chest and more.

Overcharge. Burnout. Death-pulse.

He fired.

A bolt of pure, concentrated black VYTHRA compressed thunder.

It slammed the entity mid-air.

Reality tore open for a moment—like a hole in the sky.

The entity shrieked. Shrank. Wavered.

But did not die.

Max collapsed, smoking, coughing lightning from his lungs.

Karl (driving faster):

"You good?!"

Max (choked laughter):

"I think I just thunder-punched my soul out…"

Scene 8 Aftermath

They fled.

The entity stayed behind… but didn't vanish.

It just stood.

Watching.

Waiting.

Scene 9 The Hollow Train

They stopped inside a gutted freight car, hidden by Karl's stealth net.

No one spoke for minutes.

The only light came from a flickering plasma torch.

Max sat slumped, fingers twitching with sparks.

Karl sat against a metal drum, bleeding from the ribs.

Shojiro crouched nearby, arms resting on his knees.

Shojiro:

"I've killed demons that could melt steel. But this…"

Max:

"This wasn't a demon. It was… entropy with eyes."

Karl:

"We need more than VYTHRA to win this war…"

Max (barely above a whisper):

"…We need hope that doesn't run dry."

Final Line

And so they sat Three Chosen, One broken world, And a whispering hunger that now knew their scent.

"Some demons don't roar. They whisper."

And they always come back for the silence.
