Chapter 9: Chapter 9
Henry reached a point when he knew he had to solve a big problem that obstructed and delayed him so much. Talented as he was in his work, no skill could really and fully compensate for the immense amount of stress and pressure going inside his head, going through all this with this old, below-standard-performing laptop. The perpetual sluggishness of the machine, with those enraging, irritating glitches, put his patience to the breaking point and beyond.
Of course, this was not the first time Henry took it seriously or considered finding a better setup for reliability and efficiency. He had weighed the pros and cons a million times in his head, and while he had debated it with himself, he kept procrastinating owing to a shortage of money or never being in the mood to invest in his future. Now, in a good position-money-wise-through these past successes and achievements, he finally felt that this was the time to take the plunge and make the change so wanted. After all, in the near future, there would be a time when his workload would need much more processing power and capability than what his present laptop would be able to manage. By far, it was wiser and prudent to look toward preparing for that eventuality rather than wait until it was a bit too late and then face all the adverse repercussions of an overburdened and overwhelmed machine soon.
It was now when Henry's laptop compiled his code, but he could barely compile it. Everything was in slow motion, and inordinate amounts of time were spent compiling alone. The size of his many projects, the identified robustness of the programming languages he chose to use, and the intricately intrinsic nature of his Universal Compiler, combined to make his poor laptop literally fight tooth and nail just to survive the many trials and tribulations necessary to compile his applications correctly. Every time he sat down to code, it was like a hard-won battle, one which the laptop was slowly but most definitely losing day by day.
The point was that he had had enough of this. Today was most definitely going to be the last straw in what had been, up until now, an over-tolerant disposition toward so many of the machine's inadequacies and shortcomings. Determined to act, Henry went to his nearby MicroCenter-a haven entrenched for the most dedicated tech enthusiasts, as he was, and went inside. A weird smell of new electronics with the energetic hum of conversation hit him the moment he stepped inside the store. No more than a few seconds inside, up came a blue-shirted staffer in a black tie, flashing a friendly, polite smile on his face.
"Good afternoon, sir. How might I assist you today?" the man said, weighing his words with just enough professionalism to keep the conversation friendly.
Henry explained that he had come to choose, with due deliberation, different components that were to make up an entirely new computer. Convinced that he knew exactly what he had to buy, he assured the attendant that he required no assistance in making the selection. The man listened to Henry's confidence and just nodded, "If you need anything, just let me know." With these simple words, the sales assistant moved away to give Henry full freedom to move anywhere in the shop to make his selections himself.
As Henry approached and reached for a shopping cart, which was nicely placed near the entrance, he began his very first important journey of making his way up and down the various aisles of the store. Well, Henry did exhaustive research, leaving no stone unturned. He had allocated a budget of $3,000, a very well-thought-out list of handpicked parts to do nothing but perform optimally with top-notch results. The parts he chose were quite indicative of his need to build a strong, future-proof system to run his power-intensive workload with fluent ease and efficiency, never breaking a sweat. After some thought-provoking deliberation and having made a few changes according to what was available at that particular time, he finally settled on the following:
AMD Ryzen 5 7600X: A reliable and high-performing processor priced at $240.
PowerColor Hellhound RX 7900 XT (White Edition): A robust graphics card, perfect for his needs, priced at $850.
ASUS ROG STRIX B650-A Gaming WiFi (White PCB): A premium motherboard for $260.
Corsair Vengeance DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) 6000MHz CL36 (White): High-speed RAM, ideal for multitasking, costing $140.
Samsung 980 Pro 2TB NVMe SSD: A fast and spacious storage solution for $150.
Corsair RM850x Shift (850W, Fully Modular, White): A reliable power supply for $140.
Lian Li Lancool III RGB (White): A sleek and spacious case for $150.
DeepCool LT720 360mm AIO (White, High Performance): A cooling solution priced at $80.
ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ (27", 1440p, 165Hz, IPS): A high-resolution monitor for $300.
The total count of all components was $2,310. Henry also decided to pick up a few extra peripherals to round out his setup: one that came with a nice, tactile response mechanical keyboard along with a wireless mouse for ease of use and flexibility, and professional-grade headphones, designed to produce very good sound. The additions came at an additional cost of $400, added to his running total. All in all, he figured that he had invested $2,710 total, a smart move since it put him $290 below his pre-set budget of $3,000. Pleased with the choices he had selected and what he was buying, Henry confidently went onward to the checkout counter, where he paid for his items. He next ordered a ride through Uber to transport himself and all of his new purchases home. These were, of course, overwhelmingly huge and heavy to carry for him, all the more so, since he did not even have a car to help him carry them.
Even though Henry did not have a car, he still had a driver's license. The nature of his job as a hotel receptionist often required him to park cars for the convenience of the guests, and thus, getting a driver's license had become a necessity for him. Even so, even with the license, he was seldom able to get enough opportunities to drive, let alone own a car.
Upon arrival, Henry carefully loaded the recent purchases into the Uber trunk and sank into his seat in comfort for the ride home. A rising tide of excitement began to build in his mind at the kinds of incredible performance his new PC would pull off. This wasn't just upgrading; this was another huge and important step further down the road he had been traveling for so many years. He had been putting up with some atrocious equipment for far too long and was finally doing something about it.
Reaching his apartment, Henry wasted no time in firing up the new PC assembly process. He unwrapped each item separately, giving plenty of time for the sleek modern design of each to be appreciated. Henry found the construction of the computer a very systematic process, and at the same time, practically therapeutic. He was overcome with a deep sense of fulfillment as he installed the motherboard with great diligence, the power supply with much care, and the cooling system with much thoughtfulness. With every deliberation, he felt drawing ever closer to a project he had set out to see accomplished, hence planned for several months.
Henry's pc was all white and cool-looking. Honestly, he couldn't care less about the looks but since his budget was that high, he was able to bring out a nice-looking build while retaining the performance
After hours of having passed, the assembly finally came to an end. The new white casings and RGB lighting indeed made it look futuristic while sitting on his desk. Of course, he did not spare one extra second to put on Windows 10 and then carefully transferred all important files from his old laptop to the new one. Surprisingly, this new gadget felt like a great revelation as he started taming its easy-to-use interface. The speed and precision at which the cursor moved were just something he had never gotten from any of his computers. The most important tasks he dragged with painfully slow sluggishness and frustration and now were done to his great surprise with seamless efficiency.
Henry had thought about installing Windows 11, but then he never did. What he liked was this minimalistic, classically designed Windows 10. Of course, he could see certain real advantages in migrating to the most recent OS, but none of those touched on anything relevant to his needs as of the moment. He can always upgrade whenever the situation warrants it with no problems at all.
Everything set just so, Henry leaned back in his chair and let out a deep, almost resonant sigh of exhalation. This transfer from his ancient old laptop to this magnificent, brand-new PC was finally and completely done a major task in its own right. For the first time in many, long years, he felt that he was truly ready, or at least sufficiently prepared for anything problematic coming his way, however daunting that may be.
As far as gaming was concerned, Henry had absolutely no desire in that direction whatsoever. Since he had gotten the system, he had entirely stopped gaming in order to focus on his goals both at home and at work. His gaming presently consisted only of a bit of Call of Duty, really just a favorite way he liked to spend his free time. The system had filled that void rather nicely, though, and it was almost as much fun as any video game could be. This took on the aspect of a hobby for him, not only fun but one that contributed greatly to the productivity of his spare moments.
As Henry stared back at his impressive new setup, he couldn't help but think about how remarkable the journey he had started and how far he'd come. He wasn't anywhere near that idealistic graduate fresh out of college who got himself stuck in that mindless dead-end job that was leading him nowhere. At this stage of his life, he was well on his way toward creating something useful and important, something with the phenomenal possibility of changing his whole life. With this new PC in his hands, he was ready for the next crucial step in his journey.
The road ahead would no doubt be very long and hard, with many obstacles and complications; Henry was, however, fully prepared for whatever lay ahead. Seated with his eyes fixed on the bright, pulsating RGB lights of his brand-new computer, Henry was filled with this strong aspiration welling up in his heart it was the start of something great and assuring, a start to everything.
