BTTH: Demon Emperor Xiao Yan

Chapter 37: Chapter 37: Xun’er and Xiao Yixian

While Xiao Yan was fiercely refining the Nether Poison Flame, far away in Wutan City, Xiao Yixian was managing her little medical hall as usual. However, running the place hadn't been as easy as she'd imagined. Over the past six months, troublemakers had shown up every few days. If it weren't for the guards Xiao Yan had left behind, the hall might've been forced to shut down already.

Thinking of this, Xiao Yixian couldn't help but miss Xiao Yan deeply. 'If he were here, those bastards wouldn't have dared to cause trouble again and again.' Her gaze landed on the ring he had given her, and her expression became a little dazed. "Half a year already... I wonder how he's doing with that matter."

"Excuse me, is Miss Xiao Yixian here?" A crisp and slightly childish voice sounded at the door, breaking her daze. She turned her head and saw a girl in green robes slowly stepping through the doorway.

She looked to be about ten years old, but her features were exquisitely beautiful. Paired with a temperament as elegant and ethereal as a green lotus, it was easy to imagine what a peerless beauty she would become when she grew up. Even Xiao Yixian, also a girl herself, was briefly entranced at first sight—let alone anyone else.

"I'm Xiao Yixian. May I ask what brings you here, young miss?" Xiao Yixian quickly recovered her composure, both surprised by the girl's looks and temperament, and a bit puzzled. Her clinic usually only sold injury salves to mercenaries. Today, such an extraordinary guest truly stood out.

"I heard that Brother Xiao Yan brought a friend back recently and even helped her open a medical hall, so I got a little curious." The girl smiled warmly as she looked at Xiao Yixian with her airy presence. "Now that I've seen you, I realize Sister Xiao Yixian really is beautiful. No wonder Brother Xiao Yan would be so attentive."

"You know Xiao Yan?" Xiao Yixian blinked in surprise. Although she had lived with him in a small valley for some time, he rarely spoke about his past. She had no idea someone with such a unique aura was connected to him.

"I'm from the Xiao Family as well. Just call me Xun'er. Relationship-wise... I suppose you could say I'm his younger sister." As she spoke, an unnatural look briefly flickered across her face. Xiao Yixian assumed it was just shyness, unaware that the girl was actually remembering something else entirely.

"So you're Miss Xun'er." Xiao Yixian's demeanor instantly softened. She brought out a treasured tea set to entertain her guest. Since she was Xiao Yan's sister, she was practically her own little sister too. With Xiao Yan gone, she'd take care of this sister in his stead, as a way to repay him.

"Miss Xiao Yixian, how did you meet Brother Xiao Yan?"

"Oh, well… it's a long story." Xiao Yixian paused as she began to recall their encounter a year ago. "It was during a time when I was being hunted by a Magic Beast... he saved me."

"A hero saving a beauty, huh?" Objectively speaking, Xiao Yixian wasn't a great storyteller and didn't use fancy language, so her tales came across a bit dry. But to Xun'er, these possibly clichéd stories were enthralling.

Through her tales, Xun'er learned that her Brother Xiao Yan was someone who stood up for justice and helped others, a warm and humorous man who treated everyone with patience. Unbeknownst to her, the reality of Xiao Yan's actions often differed drastically.

Xiao Yixian already harbored fond feelings for Xiao Yan, and people often unintentionally romanticized their memories. So many of his stranger actions had been glossed over or given new explanations in her recounting.

For instance, during the time in the Magic Beast Mountains, when Xiao Yan coldly ignored the deaths of villagers, Xiao Yixian claimed he'd tried desperately to save everyone but was overwhelmed by the cruelty of the He Clan's enforcers. Even the story of how he knocked her unconscious with a chop to the neck was changed into a rescue act—Xiao Yan had sensed malicious intent from the villagers and spirited her away to safety.

And it didn't stop there. His occasional impatience while escorting her was now described as tender care. The time he stuffed her in a sack and carried her off became a gentle princess carry to escape pursuit.

If Xiao Yan himself were here listening, he might wonder if the protagonist of these stories shared anything with him beyond the name.

Of course, Xiao Yan had done plenty more—many of which were better left in the shadows. But since Xiao Yixian knew nothing of his clandestine deeds, she couldn't share them even if she wanted to. Unintentionally romanticized and selectively remembered, Xiao Yan's image in both their hearts only grew more admirable.

By day's end, the two girls had chatted warmly and grown surprisingly close. By the time Xun'er was preparing to leave, they were already calling each other sisters.

Just as she was about to walk out the door, Xun'er seemed to remember something. "By the way, Sister Xiao Yixian, I heard that lately people have been coming around here to cause trouble. Do you want me to help deal with them?"

"There's no need." Xiao Yixian blinked, then shook her head without hesitation.

"Why not?"

"Xiao Yan left me a group of helpers. They're more than enough to deal with those guys. Besides..." Xiao Yixian pulled a small pouch from her robes and said, "I don't want to rely on others for everything."

"What's that?"

"A medicinal powder I've been developing recently. It's not very powerful, but it's more than enough to teach those little punks a lesson." Xiao Yixian smiled.

"I see..." Xun'er finally understood. She had previously discovered that the troublemakers pestering the clinic had been sent by Xiao Yan himself. This had disappointed her a little—she had thought him to be just another spoiled young master. Her original plan was to come and warn Xiao Yixian.

But after hearing her stories, Xun'er had begun to suspect there might be more to the situation. Surely her Brother Xiao Yan wasn't that kind of man.

Now, seeing Xiao Yixian's confident and independent attitude, she realized the truth: Xiao Yan had orchestrated it all to help Xiao Yixian become stronger on her own.

'Brother Xiao Yan really is putting in so much thought and effort...'
