Chapter 52: Chapter 52 — A Gift of Gratitude
The aftermath of battle lingered like smoke on the wind. With the threat driven back, Kael, Mira, Balen, and the others gathered in the clearing to tend to wounds and restore their strength. The ground bore the scars of magic and steel, but for now, peace settled over Wrenvale's defenders.
Balen wiped the blood from his blade and turned to Kael. "We'll hold the line here. I've sent word to the villagers—they're safe, just beyond the ridge. They'll return by nightfall."
Kael nodded, relieved. "Good. They should see that it's truly over."
As the sun dipped low, the first of the villagers trickled back. Among them was a familiar face—an older woman Kael had once helped, her steps lighter than before.
She approached with a cloth-wrapped bundle in hand and a warm smile on her face. "Young man… you may not remember me. You healed me weeks ago—those awful gallstones, remember?"
"I do," Kael said, smiling. "You look much better."
"I am. And I found this in the glade on our way back." She unwrapped the bundle, revealing a pale violet herb with translucent veins that shimmered subtly in the light. "It's a Resonance Bloom. My grandmother told me they enhance your understanding of your own magic or skills. They're rare. I want you to have it—for what you did for me."
Kael's eyes widened as he took in the herb. He could feel the latent energy humming within it. "This… this could deepen my understanding of Minor Teleport or Omni-Vision. Maybe even take one to the next tier…"
But even as he said it, his gaze drifted to Mira, who sat across the camp cleaning her glaive. Her expression was focused, but exhaustion clung to her. She had fought fiercely—for him, for the village. He owed her so much.
He walked over and gently placed the herb in her hands.
"Kael?" Mira looked up, confused.
"I want you to have this," he said. "You've grown so much already, but I know this'll help you go even further."
Mira blinked, then flushed. "But… you could use it too."
He smiled. "I believe in you, Mira. I've seen what you're capable of—and I know you'll do amazing things."
She stared at him for a moment, eyes wide and shimmering. Then, in one swift motion, she leaned in and kissed him lightly on the cheek.
Kael's face turned bright red.
"T-thank you," she whispered, hugging the herb to her chest.
He looked away, rubbing the back of his neck. "You're welcome."
And for a moment, the weight of battle gave way to something softer, something warmer.
